Obamas' Charity Donations In 2010: Which Organizations Did They Give To?

First Posted: 04/27/11 12:59 PM ET   Updated: 06/27/11 06:12 AM ET

In 2010, the Obamas gave $245,075, a total of 14 percent of their total income, to 36 different nonprofit organizations -- according to their tax returns.

So, where did the money go?

To take a look at some of the charities the Obamas supported last year, we've rounded up information on the 12 organizations that received more than $5,000 each from the first family.

President Obama also donated his $1.4 million Nobel Prize money to 10 charities in 2010. These contributions were not included on the Obamas' tax returns because the funds were given directly to the organizations from the Nobel Foundation. However, some of the recipients of the prize money were the same as the ones the president and his family made additional donations to.

Feeling inspired by the Obamas? Follow the links in the slideshow to donate to any of the organizations applauded by the first family.

Fisher House Foundation

The Fisher House Foundation snagged the Obama family's largest donation of the year with a $131,075 check.

The organization provides support for military families by offering free housing to family members so they can stay close to medical facilities while their loved ones are in the hospital.

Gee, I can't wait to see who the Rethuglikans start
wailing about, as far as who the Obamas missed.

They do realize, don't they, that the KKK is ineligible.

Glad to see the lack of religious charities on the list.

I'd like to see the same list for Boehner, Cantor, Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, O'Reilly and especially Trump.

I'm more concerned with myself, could I give more of my time or money to help those less fortunate.

Yeah, because they're always preaching about charity being better than government help, it'd be nice to see if they put their money where their mouths are.

Why didn't he pay more than a 25% effective tax rate? He's well above the "rich" income level.

Are you suggesting they did something illegal? Take it up with those who don't want to chance the tax code and want more tax cuts for the rich (hint: that would be the republicans). The president has said repeatedly that he doesn't believe he needs big tax breaks and would be fine with his rate going up. Currently he follows all tax laws, including deductions. If you are expecting him to do something outside of the law then that is ridiculous and so are you.
09:23 AM on 04/28/2011
No, I didn't suggest he did anything illegal. I am, however, suggesting he is a hypocrite for taking deductions, especially after he proclaimed (as you pointed out) that he would not mind his tax rate going up.

Additionally, if you take the position that what he did is ethical and fine, then you certainly have no problems with GE. After all, they paid no taxes within the scope of the law.

So, which is it? Make them pay their "fair" share or stop whining about corporations and the wealthy (including Obama) getting tax breaks?

Why didn't he just donate it to the US government? There is like an easy to use website at pay.gov and he is talking about how is serious about the debt and thinks the rich need to be taxed more. How much would he give to charity percentage-wise with the higher tax? How much less will others give?
09:55 PM on 04/27/2011
Come on we both know how irrational that question is. The Obama's could give 100% of their assets to the federal government and it wouldn't even make a meaningful dent in our deficit or debt. The loss of an additional 3% of his income would not have much impact on his ability to donate to charity. If he decided not to then clearly he didn't have much belief in these actions.

He would likely have donated less. Even if the 3% doesn't make a difference to him it certainly makes a difference to some people.

These all seem worthwhile donations, so I congratulate the first couple. But, still, I would have loved to have seen a donation to Planned Parenthood. The symbolism would have been magnificent.

The more pertinent and salient question would be "How much and to which charities did the Obama's contribute to BEFORE he was president?" Because as we all know, once you become a public figure of national consequence, as they have become, your record of giving becomes much more scrutinized.
11:15 PM on 04/27/2011
I don't recall any right-wing concern about Bush's donation figures.

That's true. I attempted a bad joke. The real story would be Obama eliminating the popular and successful voucher program. Shhh!
