Royal Wedding Invite Revoked For Syria

Royal Wedding Syria

JILL LAWLESS   04/28/11 10:04 AM ET   AP

LONDON — Global politics trumped ceremonial protocol Thursday, as Britain revoked a royal wedding invitation to the Syrian ambassador because of violent government attacks on protesters there.

But critics continued to ask why the guest list had room for despots while former British prime ministers Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, both from the Labour Party, were left out.

Human rights groups had criticized the decision to invite Syrian Ambassador Sami Khiyami to Prince William and Kate Middleton's nuptials at Westminster Abbey on Friday.

More than 450 people have been killed since mid-March in the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad's authoritarian regime, with 120 dead over the weekend.

The government said ambassadors from all countries with which Britain has "normal diplomatic relations" had been invited to the wedding – some 185 in all – and that an invitation did not condone regimes' behavior.

But the Foreign Office said Thursday that "in the light of this week's attacks against civilians by the Syrian security forces, which we have condemned, the foreign secretary has decided that the presence of the Syrian ambassador at the royal wedding would be unacceptable and that he should not attend."

It said Buckingham Palace shared that view.

Khiyami said he was not surprised by the decision, which he attributed to "the effect of media on government decisions."

"I find it a bit embarrassing but I don't consider it a matter that would jeopardize any ongoing relations and discussions with the British government," he told the BBC.

Britain has been strongly critical of the violence in Syria, and on Wednesday summoned Khiyami to the Foreign Office for a dressing-down.

Other diplomatic omissions from the guest list include the ambassadors of Libya – where Britain is involved in NATO action against Moammar Gadhafi's regime – and Malawi, whose envoy was expelled from London this week in a tit-for-tat diplomatic feud.

Among the royal wedding invitees criticized by rights activists are Swaziland's absolute monarch, King Mswati III; the ambassador of President Robert Mugabe's regime in Zimbabwe; and Prince Mohamed bin Nawaf bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia.

Protesters were planning a demonstration outside Buckingham Palace Thursday to condemn Saudi Arabia's role in quashing dissent in neighboring Bahrain.

Bahraini Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, declined a wedding invitation, saying he did not want the Gulf nation's unrest to tarnish the celebration. Bahrain's rulers have imposed martial law and are backed by a Saudi-led military force to try to quell an uprising that began in February.

Commentators also noted the omission of Blair and Brown. The two Labour ex-premiers were not invited to the wedding, while their Conservative counterparts John Major and Margaret Thatcher were. Thatcher declined due to poor health.

The palace rejected suggestions the royals felt closer to Conservative politicians that to Labour ones. But some have suggested that Queen Elizabeth II cooled to Blair when he advised the royal family to show more emotion in the wake of Princess Diana's death in 1997. His wife, Cherie, also reportedly refused to curtsey to the queen and revealed in a memoir that the couple's son Leo was conceived during a visit to the royal estate at Balmoral.

Palace officials said the decision was not a snub, but a matter or protocol. Brown and Blair are not Knights of the Garter, a ceremonial order of chivalry, while Major and Thatcher are.

Blair insisted he wasn't offended. During a visit to Colombia, he said the lack of an invitation was "not a problem at all" and wished the prince and his fiancee every happiness, Britain's Press Association news agency reported.

But former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said it was odd that Blair and Brown had not been invited while Syria's ambassador had.

"In retrospect I think the decision-makers probably would have made some different decisions," he told the BBC.

Good,in some cases political and diplomatic protocol should trump celebrations,no need to have this guy invited.Good thing the King and Prince of Bahrain,King of Swaziland and others not present, imagine having these tyrants at a happy wedding event.Imagine if Gaddafi or his sons were invited.

Good for wedding, good to Kate Middleton's beautiful face instead of Gaddafi's ugly face.

It begs the question, why was he given an invitation in the first place?

The U.K. doesn't need the modern Royal Family to bring in tourism, it has the unique history of both the Royals and the British People to do that. How many tourists actually meet the Royal Family? Tourists come to see Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, etc. which would exist without the modern day Windsors. Besides, I find it difficult to justify the pomp and circumstance of one family to continue the charade of Royalty. The Windsors are no more deserving than any other Brit.

The President of the United States is doing what he should be today, visiting families distraught by the tornado outbreaks in Alabama and Mississippi and attending the shuttle launch with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

What's disturbing is the talk of 'social mobility' and the obsession with the Royals abroad while many are fighting and dying to do what Americans did 230 years ago, throw off the chains of monarchy and enter the modern age of human equality. Does America get it right it all the time? No, but that doesn't change the heart of this nation and its people. We endeavar to improve always.

IMO The Brutish Royal Family IS NOT the arbitrator of good manners or taste! Hello, get it! They are a tacky bunch and so many people think they're a barometer for good manners, silly useless people. They're the worst in entertainment IMO.

what a strange way they go about selecting the majority of guests, those not family or genuine friends more specifically. just yesterday i was reading a story which highlighted how the palace had snubbed all the currently living, what we would call "liberal" aka labour prime ministers while sending out invites to all living conservative, torrie(spelling?) pm's going as far back as maggie thatcher. so at first glance it really makes the royal family look like, well that they would rather have a representative from a government that is brutal, murders and tortures it's own citizenry. has sanctioned/directed the murder of people on every continent with the exception of antartica. the aforementioned syrians get a warm welcome while the fellow countrymen of the royals, albeit with different political views, they get the cold shoulder? at least the royal handlers did wise up and cancel the syrian invite. maybe michaele salahi and her husband had the date open up for them, either that or the generals running burma decided to accept their invite after all. lol

I agree, it sounds as if whoever is running the show needs to employ a good events manager. Not only do they appear to have been happy to share champagne and canapes with representatives of regimes who repress their own people but they've snubbed quite a few people eg Blair and Brown. To up the 'silly' index it appears that the palace put last minute rules in place so that the BBC wouldn't allow a live feed of the wedding to australia's ABC to stop a satirical group 'the chaser' doing a show on the happy event.

As long as Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa sends an expensive wedding gift of say $250,000 he wont be missed.

Ha! They don't invite a loving, healthy couple who also happen to be leader and wife of the free world, but they invite the ambassador of a rogue country with suspect human rights records and now have to revoke it. The royals are trash.

Israel has outdone Syria somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 to one. But then Israel doesn't bother with all this pomp and circumstance. They just get drunk, throw down their champagne glasses and stomp them back into grains of silicone that the bride complains about later in the evening. For a wedding present, they all go out and steal land. The groom then carries his bride over the threshold of their new double-wide.

this is rich. A family and heritage based on tyranny is disinviting someone because of tyranny. Sort of like "old money" looking down on "new money".

So, sticking to the analogy, which I really believe escapes you, America has no tyranny. I don't think I'd even get on that London double decker.

30 Million dollars for this wedding. Wonder how the people feel about that price tag. And they even give the Queen a salary of 23 Million per year, she has 800 servants, Charles got 28 Million this year. Why aren't the people protesting in the streets?
