BlackBerry Bold 9900, 9930 Announced, Will Run BlackBerry OS 7 (PICTURES)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 05/02/11 10:39 AM ET   Updated: 07/02/11 06:12 AM ET

RIM kicked off its BlackBerry World event in Orlando, Florida by launching the not-so-secret BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 models, also dubbed "Bold Touch."

While the devices don't noticeably stray from RIM's design choices from the past decade -- they're instantly recognizable as QWERTY keyboard BlackBerrys -- the 9900 and 9300 pack some impressive guts. While the 2.8-inch VGA touchscreens won't impress many in today's world of 4-inch screens, but the devices are RIM's thinnest yet at 10.5mm.

A quick note: the devices are differentiated primarily by the cellular networks that they support. The 9900 will run 4G via HSPA+ connectivity, while the 9930 is RIM's world version with dual-band CDMA and quad-band GSM. Both devices get a blazing fast 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, a five megapixel camera that can shoot 720p video, NFC (near-field communication) capability, 8 gigabytes of onboard storage and the usual mix of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

When launched this summer, both will be running the brand new BlackBerry OS 7, which promises a faster browser and improved user experiences.

Can someone tell me if the Storm 3 will ever come out or is it no longer going to happen? I have checked online for months to see what I can find out about any release date for Storm 3 release date but found nothing.

I currently own a Blackberry and have owned an iPhone and I have come to the simple conclusion...

The Blackberry is for those who need a tool
The iPhone is for those who want a toy

BB are such an innovative brand. Over in Britain, a BB is the 'it' phone to have for young teens at the moment. IPhones have been shunned for the fast thumbs keyboard and BB Messenger functions.
BB appeals to people right across the spectrum.

I remain way too chea. . . , er frugal, to be interested in a new phone. If I ever do squeeze out my credit card, though, this is close to ideal for a number of reasons. First and foremost I use my phone to actually make and receive phone calls (imagine that) always with a bluetooth headset. With some of the newer toys that I have tried, one would be better off with tin cans and string in spite of impressive web browsing and OS.

maybe one should try this Blackberry and see if it will rise up to its hype - not happy with the display though

After reading the comments, I am admittedly a BB lover primarily because of security. Absolutely, I would love for BB to have the bells and whistles comparable to iphone and android. However, I believe security and some privacy is a must that only BB provides. For some reason, cosmetics has not been at the top of RIM's priority list. I was so excited when it was leaked that BB would have a full touch screen BB with a slide out qwerty keyboard. One, it eventually went to all the major carriers except Sprint. Secondly, it was made with only 3G capability. I held out on an upgrading for six months waiting for this phone to come out. Talking about a disappointment.

I love my BlackBerry. The added security is a boon, sure, but I use mine for email and texting, mostly. No other phone can rival the ease of use for such use. I'm not a game player, and I don't need to show people that my phone can sound like a light-saber. The i-phone, just my opinion, is more of a vanity piece. I have a pretty fancy chair in my living room, but I don't sit in it. I prefer my comfy chair with less flair.

If it take BB four years and huge market share losses to drag this lame, old mule to the dog & pony show - they have truly lost the plot - much like Nokia has. Outstanding Job Steve

I love my BlackBerry because if it's lost, an attacker would be better off erasing the phone than trying to break into it to find out what my life is worth. This is the most compelling reason to own a BlackBerry right now, and a reason not lost upon the many financial, health, and insurance institutions out there.

I want BB to be a major competitor -- I don't want the market to shrink to a two-way race between Google and Apple -- but BB isn't helping itself with these old designs.

Oh wait, no? Whoops, good luck pushing adoption through any financial, health, or insurance institutions.

I had a Blackberry for personal use and I did not like it at all since it was slow and did not have that many features and I prefer Android. With that said, Blackberry is the best phone you can have for business use.

Able to vacation in a rural area in Europe or Asia or South America and pull out my SIM card and pop in a local card for even cheaper than 1¢ a minute dialing - CHE....ooops!

Being able to get work done on a BB instead of being distracted by games, FB updates, available movies, etc? - ooops!

The best convergence between email/phone/contacts/calender//IM/ etc of any other phone on the market? - ooops!
