Crop Circle House: Australia Earth Home Designed By Jolson Architecture (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 05/02/11 01:43 PM ET   Updated: 07/02/11 06:12 AM ET

From Inhabitat:

While it may look like the work of an extraterrestrial, this swirling green home was actually designed by a mere earthling. And if you need more evidence of its origin, the crop circle-esque home is actually named the Earth House. Designed by Jolson Architecture, the eye-catching abode was built from local materials and blends gracefully into the verdant site it sits upon.

If you took a look at this Earth House from above, you might mistake its swirling lawn for a verdant crop circle. We have to say that the beautiful rammed earth house certainly is out of this world with its clean architecture, and lovely landscaping. Designed by Jolson Architecture, the Earth House is also built from local materials and carefully considers the idyllic Victoria, Australia site it sits upon.

It might be earth house, but there's nothing idyllic about it coz of the amount and area of land that is wasted around it which can other wise be put to use for growing trees. That would make it idyllic and in true sense an Earth House

I rather like this design, but...

Victoria State in Australia is pretty dry, getting only around 20 inches of rainfall per year. The landscape around the house does look rather parched and California-like. I do hope that they don't surround this house with a lot of thirsty landscaping. I see an awful lot of green grass in the yard. That would kind of defeat the environmental point.

Also, why no solar panels on the roof?

He's as good an architect as he is a singer and entertainer. I wonder if they do design reviews in black-face.

Beautifully designed home and obviously one that comes from deep pockets.

But I don't think I could say it gracefully blends in.

You want blending in? Build a hobbit home. :-)

Really? I took a second look and unless I am missing something (and probably am) there is no exit or entrance from the outside. Several of the paths are dead ends and in fact it looks like they all are?

So can you show me, cuz I'm confused.

What an unappealing design. Huge square walls, nothing organic. Blah, with a capital B.

Wait for the trees to grow in to break up the walls, you'll like it better.

Would've buried it 3-4 feet to take advantage of the earths cooling abilities.

I used to think that earth-sheltering a home was the way to go, including a green roof. Over the past thirty years, my thinking has evolved because:

1) Humans really do need their natural light,
2) Insulation technology has improved considerably,
3) Geo-exchange climate control systems allow you to tap into the cooling power of the soil without actually having to live underground, for a minimal investment in energy, and
4) Most of us live in places where we should have solar panels on our roofs (which, like insulation, has improved a lot in 30 years), rather than soil.

Now that the Architectural Digest pix are done, they need to turn that lawn under. In a country with some of the most dire water shortages on the planet, there is nothing less 'eco' than lawn.

It looks more like a labyrinth than a crop circle.

(I can just hear the aliens snickering..."stupid humans...can't get a crop circle right to save yourselves...")

From the air it looks brilliant; but from the ground it just looks like a prison. Unless you're going to be suspended above it, then I don't see where it's so good. Still, at least it's been made from local materials and, hopefully, used local builders, etc.

Fantastic. Intelligent and innovative design, use of local materials, incorporation of seasons and the path of the sun, blending into the surrounding countryside - architecture at its best. Past masters like Lloyd-Wright would be proud of this team.
