No Royal Prenuptial Agreement For Prince William And Kate Middleton

Prince William Prenup

First Posted: 05/02/11 06:43 PM ET Updated: 07/02/11 06:12 AM ET

Prince William and Kate Middleton--the newly appointed Duke and Duchess of Cambridge--did not sign a prenuptial agreement prior to their April 29th wedding, multiple sources are reporting.

Royal aides told the Daily Mail that William was not advised to sign a prenup with his new wife, countering claims that he had willingly turned down a proposed legal agreement.

"For him to refuse, it would have had to have been suggested to him by someone and it was not," a source told the Daily Mail. "There is no prenuptial agreement in place for this wedding." (The Telegraph attributes the latter comment to an unidentified St James's Palace spokesman).

The Telegraph further reports that one of William's friends said that the Prince had knowingly turned down legal advice: "William was advised that some sort of legal agreement might be a good idea," the paper reports one of his friends as saying. "But he loves Kate and trusts her implicitly, and was adamant that no agreement was necessary."

According to the Daily Mail, William earns £37,170 a year as a flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force, in addition to the £6.5million that was left to him by his mother, Princess Diana. Middleton has no income, having quit her job at her parents' online party supply business to plan the wedding.

I know that I'm a little late here, but all of this is kind of moot, since pre-nups are pretty much un-enforcable in the UK. It wouldn't have matterd if they had a pre-nup, because it would most likely be disregarded during any divorce proceedings.

Getting a prenup would shatter the fairy tale romantic image this handsome couple enjoy. My advice is that they should get a post-nup since it's more legally binding anyhow. I truly think they have a good shot at making their marriage work but it is tempting to say, "And they lived happily ever after..."

The mother who left him 6. 5 million? She obviously didn't end up financial problems from the divorce.

When I saw her I marveled greatly.

Actually there were discussions with Middleton lawyers regarding her responsibilities and expectations. There legally had to be, since she was becoming part of the ruling family.

This marriage is less than a week old. How on earth did the conversation end up here? To be even asking about prenuptial agreements in this case is vulgar beyond belief. Please stop!
09:49 AM on 05/03/2011
This is supposed to be the "royal" family; isn't it? And actually prenups are supposed to be talked and asked about before the wedding; so a week later I would say it is too late; not too soon as you are suggesting.

You don't need a pre-nup when you plan to be married for the rest of your lives. A pre-nup is a clear indication that divorce is an option. If a couple goes into marriage saying divorce is NOT an option, their marriage is stronger (because they work through their problems instead of running away from them). Good for William and Kate!

What world do you live in? One thing is to be in love another is to be naive or stupid. Of course couples objective of marriage is not a divorce, but guess what, it happens; therefore, you should protect your assets becuase you run the risk of losing them in case of a divorce (at least half of it). But if you want to risk it, it is your choice however stupid but your choice nevertheless.

The money he earns in the air force is clearly his, just as any soldier's pay is well-earned.

I didn't know females could be defined as misogynists... Have a little humor, you obviously don't listen to Kanye West. Not everything should be taken serious on here.

As a dedicated non-fan, I only caught up with the Kanye business later in the thread - apologies for missing the humour. All that and you aside - perfectly possible to be a female misogynist. These boards are teeming with them. Try one where the topic is sexual assault.

Why are we talking about a PRENUP? Do you people know something I don't know? Is there trouble? Trouble with the marriage? Trouble on the HONEYMOON? Are they fighting about money? It THAT it? Money? Is there infidelity? A wandering eye? Is one of them not who they claimed to be? Is his name really William? Is she nagging him? Does he not like her taste in living room furniture? Will she not let him watch TV during dinner? What's the STORY? What's the DEAL? And whatever it is, I intend to sit right here until someone tells me. Well?

Calm down. Take a deep breath. Writing in caps for emphasis is so 90s.

This is an extraordinary marriage and I disagree with William's decision not to have a prenup. Divorces happen to well intentioned people all the time. Have you seen the divorce rate? I don't think a prenup is so unreasonable, especially in the case of royalty.

Marriages have a right to succeed. They also have a right to fail. Nothing wrong with being prepared if such an unfortunate event were to occur.

You make a very reasonable and, above all, common sense case for prenups, when one party has enormously more wealth than the other.

Or, if both parties really agree that a prenup is unnecessary because their mutual trust is truly eternal, why not just can the whole idea of marriage in the first place?!

I say let them live together, as they have been doing anyway for quite some time now, without the trappings of marriage.

That way there is no need for a prenup.

Actually, what's SO 90s is having no sense of humor.

Prenup? No need! The "royal" family has nothing. They are mooching off of the "commoners".
07:47 AM on 05/03/2011
Not true - they have a great deal of personal wealth due to land holdings etc. after all, their heritage dates back over 1,000 years!

if the people of the UK want to stop being commoners then they should stop acting like commoners and form a modern government with an elected head of state.

I think they like each other
These people who say she has to produce children "as soon as possible" are overstating the case. Give them two or three years to enjoy each other's company first.

Would everyone just leave them alone?? Now we have the media sniffing around, trying to find out where they are going on their honeymoon. I enjoyed the royal wedding, have a lot of respect for this young couple but I do not need to know every detail of their lives and I think it's time we honored their privacy, Enough already!
