Osama Bin Laden Dead: Outpouring At Ground Zero Brings Complex Range Of Emotions

First Posted: 05/02/11 06:10 AM ET   Updated: 07/01/11 06:12 AM ET

It was a crowd without a leader. Yet the chorus from hundreds outside 1 World Trade Center early Monday shifted seamlessly from the "Star Spangled Banner" to "God Bless America" to the pledge of allegiance and back--anything would do.

All along Church Street near Ground Zero, a mass of New Yorkers spilled into the streets to mark the death of Osama bin Laden, architect of the mass killing at that very spot nearly a decade ago. But behind the constant refrain of patriotic chants was a deep range of emotions among the masses gathered there.

There were the friends and family who lost loved ones nearly ten years ago; the doe-eyed college freshmen, scaling traffic signals, hoisting American flags and spraying champagne on crowds below, and the neighborhood loyalists, who every day deal with fresh reminders of a seminal New York City tragedy.

Lydia Roman and Maria Dapontes-Dougherty raised a t-shirt bearing a black-and-white photo and emblazoned with the name Christopher Santora high above the crowd. At 23, Santora was one of the youngest firefighters to perish in the World Trade Towers nearly 10 years ago.

Close family friends from Astoria, the two women come out to Ground Zero for every annual Sept. 11 memorial service. But this night was clearly different.

"The anniversaries become kind of normal, in a way," said Dapontes-Dougherty, who rushed over from Queens immediately after Obama's speech. "Tonight, we're celebrating justice. It just makes you proud. It lets you know that America didn't give up."

As younger students hoisted friends on their shoulders nearby, Rick Kelly calmly observed the crowd around him. Kelly lost 15 close friends and coworkers in the 9/11 attacks.

He had just ended his job as the bartender at the Windows on the World restaurant, located at the top of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, a few weeks earlier. After making frantic calls to former coworkers, he learned that none of his friends from that morning's shift made it out alive.

The second Kelly heard the news of bin Laden's death Sunday evening, he left his West Village apartment and headed straight to Ground Zero.

"That was something that really changed my life in every way," Kelly recalled. "So to be down here nine-and-a-half years later, it just makes me complete. This puts a bookend on it."

As the crowds poured down Vesey Street and completely blocked Church Street, cab driver Louis Buteau had all but given up on any fares for the rest of the evening. He was the unfortunate first in a long line of traffic continuously honking--at first in frustration, but eventually as celebration.

"What can we do?" Buteau laughed, as chants of "Obama got Osama" thundered in the crowd. "The moment is a big moment. It's a victory moment. And maybe after all of it, someone might have a big fare for me."

Standing toward the edge of the crowd, Rosalie Joseph and Robert Concister had more solemn thoughts for the occasion. They're residents of Battery Park City, a neighborhood brought to its knees by the attacks, but one they have tirelessly worked to rebuild.

They fled as fast as they could once the second plane hit. Their apartment building, Gateway Plaza, was severely damaged by the fires from the World Trade Center. Yet they returned to the neighborhood as soon as they could in early 2002: Concister reopened his business, while Joseph began working on charity events for the local fire community.

"It's a celebration, and I get it, but it's kind of hard to cheer," Joseph said.

"On some level, people don't know what to do," Concister added. "I don't think a lot of people actually realize why they're cheering."

What I find disconcerting is this......while I did not vote for B u s h I completely supported him as

This is nauseating.

We celebrate the death of a man like the viczims of our foreign policy celebrated the attack on the WTC. - Is this how we honor the victims? - Create hatred so there will be more?

And by the way: the FBI stated repeatedly that Bin Laden had nothing to do with 9/11. So why exactly is it that a party at ground zero starts when the ones who told us that he did it, produced evidence that without exception turned out to be fake, told us we had to kill a MILLION INNOCENTS in Iraq to fight terrorism, uncounted thousands more in Afghanistan, and keep training terrorists and torturing innocents all over the world - the peoiple who lied and murderes every step of the way tell us they are heroes for killing Bin Laden and we celebrate.

Bin Laden was OUR creation. WE trained, armed, funded him, and told him whom to kill. He did a lot of despiccable acts and all of them under OUR command. And now we kill our own creation and celebrate?

Sick.

“I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.†-Martin Luther King, Jr.

just a point of reference, my dad died on 9/11 and while i understand why we killed him i think it's sick to celebrate it. shouldn't we be helping people so delusional and desperate and of such poor mental health that they think a terrorist attack would solve their problems? instead of waiting for them to do something stupid and then wasting trillions hunting them down and murdering them?

I'm very understanding as to the 'why' Americans are so jubilant
I lived in New York for a short time attending their schools and
Gotham IS an incredible city. I visited Ground Zero and made some
life long friends there so cheers to them and the excitement they
are feeling that Bin Laden has been taken out (we also feel a bit
of 'justice being served' with the terror attack in London '07), but
I was wondering something...could Huffington Post of found a BETTER
PHOTO to display than the large one above with three of the GEEKIEST
NERDS I have ever seen! I mean, really...check out the bloke on the
left with the blue shirt... o.0 (lol jk)

Did the dramatic Obama announcement of Bin Laden's death may U.S. safer?

"Though bin Laden is dead, al Qaeda is not," said CIA Director Leon Panetta. "The terrorists almost certainly will attempt to avenge him, and we must—and will—remain vigilant and resolute.

Speaking from the Gaza Strip, Abu Saqer of Jihadiya Salafiya said al-Qaida groups worldwide "made a connection" to initiate what he called "big revenge."
"It will come very soon," he claimed.

I don't think it's completely out of the question that Osama prerecorded a video proclaiming that the Americans faked his death, just in case they ever actually got him. I'll be really bummed if we start a whole NEW Obama conspiracy myth...
03:08 PM on 05/02/2011
He was making that video when the Seals came in. For that reason, it's not very convincing.
07:51 AM on 05/03/2011
The "information" of his death comes from the same people who trained, funded, armed, and operated him. - Who made him the terrorist he was and used him to that effect. - The same people who told us about WMDs in Iraq, produced fake evidence about Bin Laden's involvement in 9/11 that even the FBI rejected as fake, ...

And now everyone hails them as heroes because they TELL us they killed him.

Yea, right.

This is one of the most beautiful news stories I've read in a very long time. My heart goes out to all of those who were there in remembrance of a friend, a family member, a loved one, a coworker. For everyone who was out last night remembering the lives lost on September 11. This was a long time in coming :) May it bring you peace.

I felt really bummed out watching some of the live crowd footage from DC last night. People were saying some really ill stuff. Things that will most likely embarrass them today. I just hope those comments don't get played on loop across the globe.

Say what you want but a large part of what happened last night in DC is exactly what this country usually despises. The only difference here was that people were yelling horrible things in english and not a foreign language.

I've had quite a disturbing realization...

For all of us who went through the torment and national humiliation and anger of the horrors of 9/11, we'd be willing to accept many civilian deaths as a consequence of achieving our political and military goal of killing OBL.

I think that's understandable; it's certainly how I feel, and it's not necessarily wrong.

However, the same was true of AQ themselves - with the civilian deaths the weapon they used to achieve their political and military goal.

There are many reasons why our celebrations should be tempered with the knowledge that this is not the end.

Did anyone ever tell you that optimism is your best trait?

It's a sad comment on America that people will take to the streets en masse -- flags waving, bagpipes playing and singing "God Bless America" -- to cheer the death of Osama bin Laden, yet are too busy watching Celebrity Apprentice, Dancing with the Stars and The Amazing Race to take to the streets to protest, en masse, the death of the U.S. Constitution, our Bill of Rights.

"The Congress shall have Power... To declare War..." Article 1, sec.8, U.S. Const. The death of Osama Bin Laden was an act of war,"Operation Enduring Freedom;" the War in Afghanistan! It was declared in 2001 and is still ongoing. It's a sad comment on America that people do not understand our Constitution or the meaning of "WAR."
10:29 AM on 05/03/2011
Huh? I don't know what you're talking about, and I suspect you don't either. I wasn't commenting on the finer legal points of declaring war, nor debating whether the death of Osama bin Laden was a part of the larger war effort in Afghanistan.

I was speaking of the shredding of the Constitution and Bill of Rights under Bush-Cheney, who legacy has continued under Obama, and which -- if you've been paying attention -- involves myraid assaults on free speech, the suspension of habeas corpus and the "sneak and peek" provision in the USA Patriot Act, to name just a few issues on the tippiest tip of the iceberg.
