President Obama On Oprah Says He Wants To Restore Belief In American Dream

Obama On Oprah American Dream

DARLENE SUPERVILLE   05/ 2/11 05:54 PM ET   AP

CHICAGO — Barack Obama says he wants to be the president who restores people's belief in the American dream.

In an interview taped last week, Obama also expresses disappointment over sharp-edged Washington politics and his failure to soften it as he promised to do. He complains that life inside "the bubble" of the presidency is depriving him of precious, memorable moments with his growing daughters.

Meanwhile, daughter Malia has to start doing laundry, her mother said.

Obama and his wife, Michelle, revealed these tidbits on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" during an interview they granted to help a friend and major political supporter close out her top-rated, syndicated program on a high note after a quarter-century on the air.

It was the first time a sitting president and first lady have appeared together on the show, which Winfrey has said will end May 25. Taped last week at Winfrey's Chicago studio, the interview was broadcast nationally Monday.

Asked what he wants his legacy to be if he is re-elected next year, Obama said he wants people to feel that opportunity is there for them if they work hard and do the right things. He said there's a general sense that the American dream is "slipping away."

Obama sat for the interview hours after releasing a detailed version of his Hawaiian birth certificate in a bid to end distracting speculation, fueled by prospective Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, over whether Obama is U.S.-born.

Obama said the controversy is an example of the blurring between politics and entertainment, as "carnival barkers" seek attention by calling on him to show his birth certificate to prove he is a citizen and therefore constitutionally qualified to hold office.

"Reality TV is seeping into how we think about our politics," Obama said in the interview.

While he has described the clamor for his birth certificate as "silliness," he said stories he hears about people's fears of losing their homes or unsuccessful efforts to find a job are not funny.

Politics aside, it is great to have such wonderful humans, parents, spouses representing our nation. Watching them together makes me wonder how people can attack them with such vitirol.

I think some people would rather have a president chasing the GOP tail!
I like Obama's style, focused and straight to the point.

Obama Got 2012!

It's funny how all the haters misspell every name and word in their post, except for racist, that word they seem to have down pat.
07:19 PM on 05/03/2011
They just hate to say his name!
I blast it!

Obama says he wants to be the president who restores people's belief in the American dream.
But he wants gas prices at between $5 and $7 per gallon- that will create more unemployment.
But otherwise, he and Oprah sounded just great. lol

Of course he doesn't want high gas prices ... that idea is as silly as thinking that he's not a natural born citizen ...

I saw the entire inteview! Terrific! Addressed and did not side step any quesitons. Specifically about the economy having been and still being #1 on his mind.
But some folks on this thread will tell you otherwise, obviously they did not watch or listen.

Love our prez and his family...what a welcome change.

Whatever happened to focusing on the economy and getting 23 million Americans back to work??? Millions of Americans are losing their homes, farms and life savings while the President is constantly campaigning and hamming it up on TV. It's disgusting!

What happened to the economy?

Obama averted the risk of a depression and ended the worst recession since the Great Depression in less than a year. At the end of 2009, we already had one MILLION more jobs a month than when Bush left the Oval Office.

Obama and the Dems immediately started the second phase of the recovery (the House passed a second big stimulus (fully paid for!) at the end of 2009, in order to give their job back to the 8 million people who were laid off during the 2007-2009 recession).

But ... the GOP blocked it in the Senate.

They also blocked all the other important job bills the Dems passed in the House in 2010.

If you know what that means in terms of suffering for people living on Main Street ... THAT's what I would call absolutely "disgusting" ...

As a Black woman, First Lady Michelle could be my auntie/sister. She's so one of us. So down to earth, around the way and real.

"I don't the girls, don't sit down. Girl get up, it's the pope!" ROFL because it sounds like my auntie and mom and granny used to talk to me (except I never met the pope!).

LOVE THIS FAMILY!

I love the Obama's. They are so intelligent and classy. And as far as the laundry, more youth should be learning how to take care of themselves. I am so tired of laziness!

Great Point- With gas, the economy this is what he should have been doing

What a joke- HYPOCRIT
08:57 AM on 05/03/2011
Whatever....is the President supposed to stay locked up in the White House until the economy comes back, because no other President did. Please! The man works hard and at least he is telling the country what he is doing...not hiding out in some basement waterboarding people.

I actually enjoyed the interview and for once she apologized for interrupting which she never does. The Obamas were fantastic and Im glad he made the dig about "his 18 year old mother" and her "plans". The people who actually believe that he wasnt born her are just nuts, its just not even logical.

When I hear critics talk about why he doesn't sound angry about this and that and you watch that interview, you can tell its is nature not too. Michelle is the one I can see getting angry,

I was surprised that the big-mouthed Oprah kept interrupting Michelle.

Bravo Obamas! These two have more class in their pinkies than the entire GOP put together.

With just one word, "citizenship", Mrs. Obama conveyed her contempt for the carnival barkers.

I can't wait until this woman can write a bio.
