"Osama bin Laden" by Michael Scheuer
1 of 8
Scheuer was the chief of the CIA's Osama bin Laden unit from 1996 to 1999, and he thoroughly describes bin Laden's ascent from dedicated student to notorious terrorist. Though his detail can be overwhelming and difficult to keep up with, the book is definitely worth exploring. Scheuer's main point is that the U.S. has made itself more vulnerable through demonizing rather than attempting to understand.

BTW the words "Best" and "Bin Laden" in the same sentence is unsat IMHO.
YMMV

I would also throw in "The Looming Tower" by Lawrence Wright. Really does a great job of bringing the whole thing together.

I second this. I was very surprised not to see it on the list.
