Salmonella Contamination Prompts Tomato Recall

05/ 2/11 07:44 PM ET  AP

TRACY, Calif. -- A Florida tomato grower is voluntarily recalling its grape tomatoes after a sample tested positive for salmonella.

Six L's Packing Company Inc. said in a statement that no illnesses had been reported in connection to the recall as of April 29.

The Immokalee, Fla.-based company says the recalled product was packed on April 11 under the Cherry Berry lot code DW-H in clam shells or 20-pound cardboard containers. The tomatoes were distributed to California, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia, as well as Canada.

The contamination was found by a U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector at a New York distributor, according to Six L's. The tomatoes originated from a farm in Estero, Fla.

The tomatoes also were used in deli salads made by Tracy-based Taylor Farms Pacific Inc., which also recalled products Monday.

The salads were sold in plastic trays and at deli counters in Albertsons, Raley's, Safeway, Savemart, Sam's Club and Walmart stores across the West and some Midwestern states.

The affected states are Arizona, Oregon, California, Nevada, Washington, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah.

Customers are being asked to return the recalled products to the place of purchase for a refund.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Another food safety tip is to have a safe food processor. My food processor was recalled awhile back and I was very lucky I found out because people were getting injured. Since then I check all my kitchen appliances for recalls at http://WeMakeItSafer.com

this is why everyone should grown their own veggies. i know, i know, the farmers. i get that. but considering that even the most natural foods we have are contaminated - we really need to think about our health and that of our families, first.
i won't not eat the fruits and veggies i already have. i will just wash the heck out of them to ensure they are safe.

You have a sterile, hydroponic garden or something?
Salmonella can be found in virtually every part of the world and carried by an extremely wide variety of hosts including humans and other mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects

It's getting worse and worse. It seems that every other week we have some kind of food recalled and these clowns in Washington keep calling for less regulations.....

You have been reading my mind, I thought exactly the same when I read the story. Strong food regulations strictly enforced would seem to be common sense. Maybe the politicians against these regulations have their own food tasters.

Manufacture's can't do anything until people get sick. Then it is up to the Medical Community to follow up with the Food Administrator's Scientists. The FDA has to run tests to confirm the reports. If that didn't happen there could be lawsuits.

Manufacturers can do what they did here. Voluntarily recall and warn. They don't wait until people become sick, necessarily, Wil80. The USDA routinely samples produce as it's picked for market and tests it for bacterial contamination. If pathological bacteriae exist in a sample, the USDA and the grower/manufacturer follow different processes depending on the type of contaminant. a process they go through depending on the type of contaminant.

Part of that process involves notifying the CDC, which then notifies the greater medical community and gives further directions. The CDC has at the same time been collecting any reports of widespread or dire illness activity patterns that physicians and counties have reported.

There are always lawsuits for the mortalities and morbitities associated, especially if they're pediatric. This is America, after all. Home of for-profit medicine and for-profit plaintiffs' law.
