Princess Beatrice's Hat Designer Philip Treacy: No One Is Crying If She Didn't Look Gorgeous (PHOTOS, POLL)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 05/04/2011 8:28 am   Updated: 07/04/2011 5:12 am

Princess Beatrice's hat was one of the more outlandish style statements to be seen at the royal wedding, quickly taking over the Internet with its own Facebook page (132,537 "Likes" as of this posting) and Tumblr. And 78.7 percent of you told us that the ribbon-meets-reindeer headpiece was truly horrendous, while 21.3 voted for "No, I've seen worse." I'd love to see what you've seen, in that case. But no judgement, as always.

So what's the story behind the monstrous meme? Milliner Philip Treacy explained to HollywoodLife.com, "My inspiration was beauty and elegance; it's a 21st century royal wedding. No, they didn't tell me [what they wanted] because I've known them for a long time and I wanted them to look gorgeous and beautiful. They trusted me to make them. Gorgeous and beautiful can be open to interpretation...I thought they looked gorgeous and beautiful. But no one is crying if anyone didn't." (The "they" being Beatrice and sis Princess Eugenie.)

While we're at it, let's take a look at Beatrice's best moments in headwear, because it seems like that would be a rewarding use of our time. And read the rest at HollywoodLife.com.

Hideous hat and make up. She needs a make up artist to help her not look like a racoon.

The rest of her outfit was beautiful, pity about the hat! reminded me instantly of the animated characters in the tea party from the animated film Beauty and the Beast.

Any designer creates that kind of hat should be sent out of the country

I know of a good orthodontist...hat? what hat?

I don't mind the hat at all! I appreciate people marching to the beat of their own drum. I just wish she would brush her hair. The only hat you can wear and not do your hair with is a baseball cap! Other than that, you must brush and style your hair. I thought the hats were cute and fun in the slideshow, but her hair was always unruly. That spoils the hat and the image.

Obviously these girls needed a stylist, or at least a mirror. They looked like the stepsisters of Cinderella. Beatrice's hat looked like an octopus and they both should have shaped up before their appearance in front of billions of TV viewers.
Sad that their names will always conjure up this fashion faux pas image. Even their father seemed embarrassed by it all.

Ga Ga Oh LaLa...

I read (somewhere) that their mother was not invited. Therefore, she "helped" the girls with their attire, knowing the stares that would be attended. It was Fergie's way of saying :"F*** YOU!"

I thought her had resembled the "crown" adornment atop the queen's Rolls.

That would be scary even without the hat...

don't blame the mirror if you have a broken nose

It Is a gross exaggeration to call this is hat. It does not cover the crown. Henceforth, it should be called a forcov (forehead covering) or better yet, the Russian ballerina sounding forpacov ( forehead partial cover). You can elaborate on its description further, as in dainty or wide or large or shiny or colorful forcov/forpacov. The adjectives could refer to either the fashion gear itself or the actual forehead of the wearer. Saves you from offending anything or anyone.

It's called a 'fascinator', not a hat.

Absolutely. And I love it. If our clothes were only to keep us from being naked we'd all be running around in little blue or green suits with matching hats like the Chinese used to.

No matter, she looked awful. Monochromatic from head to toe, ugh. The emphasis was on her eyes which looked scary!! Sister Eugenie was not much better with her garish dress and head gear. These two young ladies need the 'what not to wear' team for a total makeover.

If you squint a little, whatever IT is looks like a cutout grocery bag. I guess, silly, useless hats are de riguer in that circle.

Really, no offense, but as a fashion photographer these images look like they were exaggerated in photoshop. Her eyes look like they were enlarged and her teeth overly whitened.

What in the world was this child thinking. couldn't she see how this hat looked on her.
This hat is quintessentially the ugliest hat I have ever seen. When she and her sister stepped
out of their car they looked like clowns. The royals used to wear beautiful hats. Well at least they are still young and can work on their sense of style. Most of us have made fashion fopas when we were young. I remember stepping out in a metallic blue Susie Wong dress when I was young and my preacher granddad just shaking his head. LOL at least he didn't laugh.

That's the coolest weird British hat ever! Love it.
