Hines Ward Held At Gunpoint, Handcuffed In Police Misunderstanding

Hines Ward Gunpoint

05/ 5/11 11:49 AM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES — Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver and "Dancing With the Stars" contestant Hines Ward was briefly detained at gunpoint Thursday in a mix-up over a reported stolen car, but he was released without being arrested, police said.

Hines and a woman friend were stopped in her car at about 1:30 a.m. in North Hollywood because she had reported the car stolen on April 19, said Sgt. Maria Morrison.

The two had left a restaurant in North Hollywood, said officer Sara Faden.

Police took Hines out of the car at gunpoint and handcuffed him, Morrison said. Hines and the woman were released after she was able to prove the car was hers.

"She had gone somewhere, misparked it, reported it stolen and found it later" but failed to cancel the police report, Morrison said.

Hines cooperated with police while he was detained, she said.

The woman's name wasn't released, but she isn't Hines' partner on "Dancing With the Stars," Morrison said.

Arrested for driving with an unintelligent person. He's damn lucky she didn't get him shot. Find a saner one next time Hines.

I agree that this is a non-story and that the media is just trying to make a story where none exists. The situation (minus Ward) does raise a question for me though. Do police officers not follow up with "victims" anymore. (I put it in quotes because this woman didn't turn out to be a real victim, but was considered one to the cops once she filed the report.) I mean, in three weeks time they didn't bother to follow up on her stolen car?

There are so many stolen vehicle reports so it is up to the victim to contact law enforcement if they have any updates.

So it's safe to say then that there is no active investigation to find stolen cars. If so, wouldn't they then update the victim, even if there's no progress. I understand car theft is huge, but maybe that's part of the reason. I've never had a car stolen and now I hope even more that it never happens. Thanks for the info though. Never knew that to be common practice.

You HP headline writers ought to have the occasional editorial meeting. I just read this storyy in another section, headlines as: "Hines Ward Handcuffed", then I turn o the sports section and he's being "held at gunpoint". I'm almost afraid to see what the 'impact' section leads with. 'Hines Ward Forced to Dance With Leg-Irons"?

If you report a car stolen, if the police see it on the road, their protocol is always to approach guns drawn. When when my car was stolen, they asked me if I was 100% certain no one I knew had it, because of this scenario.

Yup,

My great aunt was pulled over at gunpoint for the same thing. Scary stuff, but if everyone remains calm then hopefully it all ends resolved and safe.

Hines, as a Steelers fan living in Los Angeles, I extend my apologies that you had to go thorough this event, and my appreciation of your class in handling it.
Also, in the eternal hope that the NFL 2011 season will be on: GO STEELERS!

Why are they handcuffing Hines instead of the chick driving the car?

They handcuffed both of them. Occupants of stolen vehicles are often armed criminals.
