(RNS) Dallas megachurch pastor Bishop T.D. Jakes has produced his third movie, Jumping the Broom, a romantic comedy set against class divisions that opens Friday (May 6), starring Angela Bassett and Loretta Devine.

Jakes, who plays Rev. James in the film and served as producer, talked about its discussion of sex, family feuds and forgiveness. Some answers have been edited for length and clarity.

Why did you decide to make a movie about an African-American couple and the challenges they faced as they got ready to walk down the aisle?

I think it's very, very important that we begin to hone in on issues that we often don't talk about. We all have to fight through the practical application of day-to-day living.

The movie doesn't seem to be a "Christian film," but does it reflect insights you've gained as a pastor?

Through counseling for 35 years, you begin to find out that ultimately the only glue that really holds a family together is their ability to be able to forgive each other. I think the common theme in the movie is a message of forgiveness, which is congruent with Scripture.

How do you mean?

Jesus teaches us to forgive over and over again. One of the things that happens in the movie is families running into situations where their love is being challenged. They have to learn to forgive. I think families have lost a sense of forgiveness. When they find problems, they just walk away.

The film opens with the female lead in her underwear. Why did you decide to include sexual content in the movie?

The story shows a woman who has made a decision to change her lifestyle from being a fairly promiscuous person to a person who has made a vow of abstinence. The contrast in her life is what testimony is all about. You can't show somebody that Jesus is the answer if you can't show the before and the after. And we were able to achieve that without showing any nudity at all.

As you've screened the movie, have you gotten any criticism from clergy for the film's frank discussion of sex?

Considering the divorce rate that we're seeing in the world and even more rampant in the church, I think the clergy have welcomed a discussion that promoted marriage and abstinence in a humorous way that is entertaining. I think they understand that we are losing a battle while at times being extremely prudish in our inability to discuss it at all. The message of abstinence is congruent with Scripture; the images are as simple as a J.C. Penny catalog.

Some have criticized church-produced movies as too sanitized. Are you trying to move away from that?

When people don't see themselves on the screen, regardless of what the issue is, it doesn't ring authentic. I think you can show real people without being vulgar and without having a rating that locks out our younger people. Our younger people need to have this conversation.

Where's the line between showing a character's religious side and hitting moviegoers over the head with a Bible?

I've learned over the three movies that people don't go out on Friday night to be preached to. You have to show faith is an element that is planting a seed without necessarily trying to reap the harvest at the same time.

The title Jumping the Broom comes from a slave tradition. Do you use it at your church or at weddings where you officiate?

From time to time. Many African-Americans choose to reflect on their heritage and identity, much like the Jewish couple might step on the glass. It's totally a matter of choice.

You play the role of the marrying minister in the movie. Do you prefer producing or acting?

To be honest, my playing the role was a last-minute decision. Being able to walk on the stage and do a little bit of acting was fun, but my focus is really on producing.

How does this film compare to your other movie, Woman, Thou Art Loosed, which addressed domestic violence?

I have learned that serious subjects require comedy to make them more palatable on the screen. The art of the movie is to be comedic with the characters and yet serious about the subject.

I am sick of religion and nothing in christianity is calling to me anymore, I see almost every preacher as a thief, but TD Jakes I respect. he isnt flashy and he appears true. He is most defintely wise. and although he may fall, I see somethine in TD JAKES that I feel connected to. if there was any preacher who could get me back in the church, its this man, cos unless Jesus himself reveals himself to me, I dont think I can practice christianity again.

And yes forgiveness is the only glue that i believe can hold a marriage together, I dont think even love is strong enough. I have always suspected that love wasnt strong enough.

I loved listening to T.D. Jakes on the radio. He has some truly deep understanding and he is definitely a great preacher. I do not necessary agree 100% with the man, but none the less he is one of the greatest preachers of our time.

I was pretty much serious! Perry's movies set back black cinema by at least 30 years.

Isn't this movie a copycat of "Noah's Arc: Jumping The Broom"?

It takes money to feed and help the people,as well as to pay the bills today. I am sure that he has it made, but what other famous preacher in the US has it not made? Name one. At least he is not one of them faith preachers. Give me your $$$ so that God may heal you.

Religious institutions will need to revamp their moratorium on human sexuality if they want to pursuade constituents to make smart decisions and protect themselves.

It's all about the money. Jakes uses the word forgivness as the hook to get folks to see his film. for me, people with the resources to tell stories that can impact lives should be centered on what has caused the problem in characters in the frist place. While the premise sounds good, this is just another capitalist/business man who has found a market to expolit and profit. I won't see the film becsue I know that it is nothing more than another "Black explotation" movie cloaked under the guise of "Christian/inspirational" with the theme of forgiveness. Guess they'll have the usual and sterotypical loud, rolling the eyes, angry Black women who are chronically upset at their no good womanizing Black men. I'm sure we'll have the usual loud and repetative epiphany Gospel segment that is supposed to make us feel good. Really, does any Black artist out there have anything new and intelligent to share?Better yet, call a spade and spade. Jakes film is a secular film to get his mega church "social club" growing. It's all about the money...not Jesus1

Don't prejudge the movie. It has none of the cringe-worthy stereotypes that riddle Tyler Perry's films. I found the movie to be a refreshing change from the usual fare. Go check it out. You may be pleasantly surprised.

"ultimately the only glue that really holds a family together is their ability to be able to forgive each other"

Thank you. Wonderful insight. Well put. It applies to all irrespective of their religious or irreligious view.

I have told my people, these black preachers most do not know black history, so how can they lead black people about God? This movie should be a total insult to all black people, and people in general. This title Jumping the Broom, was a practice that was forced upon black couples wanting to get married, they were not allowed to get married, so what the slave holder did, was have them to jump the broom, this was the Africans wedding ceremony. To see a preacher come along hundreds of yeas later, and name a comedy movie with this title, I am blown out of the water, and all those blacks who go see this movie, will be held accountable for showing totally disrespect, and has no love for their people who suffered sins that were committed against their humanity. How can these actors, take such role, and or participate in a movie like this?

How about you see the movie and then make a judgement? Perhaps the title is an ironic play on words which turns out to be poignant and uplifting?

Just sayin.

that is precisely what the movie is about - the tradition and the concerns that go along with it.

if you feel that strongly about 'jumping the broom', i'd love to hear your thoughts on the 'n' word.

Bishop T.D. Jakes is a genuine Christian and we need more of him on television.

That is all.
