Shakespeare vs. Marvel might seem like a disconnect, but Thor was by far the most erudite of the comic books. Can you imagine any other comic (other than a Manga) exploring all the intricate twists and turns of Norse mythology and adding a few intricate twists and turns of its own? By contrast, the deepest philosophical question you were likely to come across in Superman was "where is there a phone booth when you need one?" or "why do spies use intricate disguises when all they really need is a pair of glasses?".

Or maybe this was part of a horse-trading deal he made in order to get his next Shakespeare project greenlit.  Just look at what he did with Hamlet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qsn9opKuWbs
