LONDON (AP) -- It's official: Smokey the cat has roared her way into Guinness World Records having achieved the loudest purr by a domestic cat.

Guinness says the gray-and-white tabby earned her place with record-setting 67.7 decibels. In a video on the cat's website, the 12-year-old, ordinary-size feline purrs with a sound akin to the cooing of an angry dove.

Smokey first rose to prominence in February, when her owner, Ruth Adams, ran a local competition for the most powerful purr. A community college recorded the purr and submitted it to Guinness.

Guinness says the loudest animal sounds are the low-frequency pulses made by blue whales and fin whales when they communicate with each other – sounds that reach 188 decibels. By comparison, a lawnmower is 90 decibels.

It made me sad to hear it but at least they continue to find homes for her instead of euthanizing her. What a nice kitty.

If you don't want Smokey, please send her to me. I have children that drown out the tv and have to use the closed caption option. She would fit in perfectly, or in her case purrrrrfectly.

Smokey is such an angel. They should be glad for Her!
Cat purr is a great psychological booster therapy. I can't count the times my cats have made me happy from theirs.
If they don't want Her, they can give Her to me. I do appreciate cats. She's a cute one and I don't mind but welcome the purring. People who don't appreciate it are close-minded and don't see the therapeutic possibilities. As for watching movies, so put her some place else temporarily. I don't know why people have been giving her away but pure close-mindedness.

I say this in all candor, maybe they can find Smokey a home with a deaf family. I bet you can really feel the purr vibrate in Smokey's chest.

Even tho it's loud Smokey's constant purr is less annoying than a baby's constant "waaaahing"....but you'd get arrested if you tried to give away the baby...poor Smokey..hope he can find a truly good person to live with.

They ought to air Stephanopoulus, Couric, Williams, Lauer, etc and see who gets the loudest purr. And see if she craps on the rug for Sean Hannity or Ed Shutlz.

As cat staff I don't really call that just purring, she's talking and purring at the same time. Purring is more constant i
n volume. Cool anyhow.

I haven't laughed so hard on HP since Jimmy Fallon's Charlie Sheen impersonation! That cat is adorable and very spoilt.

Our last can was a Blue Russian. I'm thinking this cat has some of that breed in him because our cat sounded a lot like this one. When you'd pet him or he slept close to you, you'd hear this loud purr but I found it to be so relaxing. After I lost my job awhile back I went into depression and I think he could sense it. His purring would comfort me and help me to get through my tough times.

At the end, they said that that was Smokeys 8th home. I hope this last owner can handle the noise. Poor loud kitty. Any way, I love when my cat suddenly jumps on my bed at night with head bumps followed by curling next to my head, purring in my ear and following asleep. It's a very soothing sound....at the right volume I suppose. :-)

That's nothing......I have a senior pug that snores like a 500 pound asthmatic man with a sinus infection. It may not seem that loud to others but at 2:00am it seems louder than a mac truck is riding through my bedroom.

Be thankful it's just a snore, my senior Samoyed-mix's "silent but deadly" gas attacks can pull you out of a coma and clear a room!
