Pepsi's Social Vending Machine

First Posted: 05/06/11 01:51 PM ET Updated: 07/06/11 06:12 AM ET

Vending machines just got a whole lot more complicated, thanks to Pepsi's new Social Vending System. In addition to regular, old-fashioned soda vending, the touch-screen machine allows users to send video messages and gifts to friends (redeemable at any Pepsi Social Vending Machine). You know, just in case thirsty customers want to practice "Random Acts of Refreshment" (Pepsi's term, not ours). Users can also access nutrition information and learn about the Pepsi Refresh program.

Neat...we guess. As David Gianatasio of Adweek says, "Awesome, now I can bond with Mountain Dew."

See the video for how this vending machine of the future works below.

Pepsi's new system lets users give their friends a beverage gift by entering the recipient's name, mobile phone number and a personalized text message or video. The gift is delivered with a system code.

What happens whenyou're just put an extra five bucks into the machine to send your BFF a greeting and a gift...and the machine malfunctions? Vending machines have been breaking down since the first one was used. How do you get your money back? I just don't see this working.

Ok, I just want to buy a soda and get back to my desk. It does NOT need to be a life altering experience. If I want to give a soda to a friend I'll be happy to deposit another $1.50. If I want to save a tree, feed the homeless, give a toy for a tot, I will happily write a check to the necessary organization. I have a limited number of minutes to purchase the soda and get back to the clients I have to deal with.

There isn't anyone across the country I know that I would want to "gift" a soda to.

If want to send a message to someone, I'll text them, email them, or actually do the unthinkable...make a damn phone call.

This ridiculous market stunt is as stunt is as stunt of Coke changing it's formula.

Please,...please...PLEASE for the love of all that is holy knock it off. Let me buy a stupid soda for the over-priced amount of $1.50 that is being asked for the soda that's gonna rot my teeth and possibly raise my blood pressure. I'm willing to take the risks, I just don't need to jump through hoops for the pleasure. .
