Puppy Mill Ban

First Posted: 05/06/11 09:35 PM ET Updated: 07/06/11 06:12 AM ET

Los Angeles Times:

A Los Angeles councilman introduced a motion Friday that could prohibit the sale and purchase of pets bred in puppy and kitten mills.
Councilman Paul Koretz, who represents an area that includes West L.A., Hollywood and Encino, said he introduced the motion to ease the city's pet overpopulation problem.
Some pet stores purchase animals from puppy and kitten mills or large-scale breeding operations with unsanitary and overcrowded conditions and inbreeding.

I had no idea puppy mills were legal in LA. That's sad, very sad indeed.

Please ban them now. I rescued a furry, little part-Maltese hobo who escaped from one of these mills. He was filthy, with matted feces in his fur and his teeth were rotted. The alleged owner threatened to sue me, but he couldn't produce one photo of the dog. How do you have a dog for seven years and not have pictures of him? Well, the little guy is so spoiled now and gets to go on long walks. Please ban these puppy mills.
BTW - the dog pictured has always been spoiled.

If you know that you are getting your dog through a puppy mill , then you should stop , and cat owners too .. if you care about animals at all you will stop .. shame on you if you don't .

Please. My daught ordered puppy from Nebraska. She was the cutest, sweetest little dog with a great personality. She came with worms, kennel cough and was underweight. She had 2 orthopedic surgeries and skin and tummy problems her whole life. When she six she got really sick. She died at the vets 3 days later. They did a autopsy. Her heart was inlarged and her liver had failed because she had hepatitis from birth. We were devastated.

People don't buy a dog from a puppy mill. Do research. Or get a healthy dog from the pound. Why buy one when you can get a great companion for very little money? Does having a purebred really that important?

There is no consideration needed. Puppy mills should be banned. Period. If you want a pure-bred dog, for some strange reason, go to an AKC registered breeder. If you want a dog to love and love you back, not that pure breds don't as they are wonderful as well, go to an animal shelter or a pet store that works directly with shelter and rescue groups. There is absolutely no need for puppy mills.

A law banning puppy and kitten mills should have been on the books years ago.

I forgot to add a little bit more.
This should be in place at a statewide level. County by county doesn't seem like the way to go .

I agree .. way to many cats and dogs are being put down .. they're very little funds if any for people these days ... there is very little to none for animals .. we need to be more responsible pet owners .
