Apple Passes Google To Become World's Most Valuable Brand

Apple has overtaken Google as the world's most valuable brand, ending a four-year reign by the Internet search leader, according to a new study by global brands agency Millward Brown.

The iPhone and iPad maker's brand is now worth $153 billion, almost half Apple's market capitalization, says the annual BrandZ study of the world's top 100 brands.

Apple's portfolio of coveted consumer goods propelled it past Microsoft to become the world's most valuable technology company last year.

Peter Walshe, global brands director of Millward Brown, says Apple's meticulous attention to detail, along with an increasing presence of its gadgets in corporate environments, have allowed it to behave differently from other consumer-electronics makers.

"Apple is breaking the rules in terms of its pricing model," he told Reuters by telephone. "It's doing what luxury brands do, where the higher price the brand is, the more it seems to underpin and reinforce the desire."

"Obviously, it has to be allied to great products and a great experience, and Apple has nurtured that."

Of the top 10 brands in Monday's report, six were technology and telecoms companies: Google at number two, IBM at number three, Microsoft at number five, AT&T at number seven and China Mobile at number nine.

McDonald's rose two places to number four, as fast food became the fastest-growing category, Coca-Cola slipped one place to number six, Marlboro was also down one to number eight, and General Electric was number 10.

Walshe said demand from China was a major factor in the rise of fast-food brands. "The Chinese have been discovering fast food and it's such a vast market -- Starbucks, McDonald's... and pizza has hit China," he said.

"The way McDonald's has reinvented itself, adapted its menus, added healthy options, expanding the times of day it can be visited, for example oatmeal for breakfast... that allied with growth in developing markets has really helped that brand."

Nineteen of the top 100 brands came from emerging markets, up from 13 last year.

Facebook entered the top 100 at number 35 with a brand valued at $19.1 billion, while Chinese search engine Baidu rose to number 29 from 46.

Toyota reclaimed its position as the world's most valuable car brand, as it recovered from a bungled 2010 product recall. The survey was carried out before the March earthquake that caused massive disruption to Japanese supply chains.

The total value of the top 100 brands rose by 17 percent to $2.4 trillion, as the global economy shifted to growth.

Millward Brown takes as a starting point the value that companies put on their own main brands as intangibles in their earnings reports.

It combines that with the perceptions of more than 2 million consumers in relevant markets around the world whom it surveys over the course of the year, and then applies a multiple derived from the company's short-term future growth prospects.

The full report is at www.millwardbrown.com/brandz.

No computers or cell phones are private but they are useful, fun, and educational. Why post info unless you don't object to everyone seeing it? I love My IPad and I love Apple but I'm not naive enough to think what I post is private. NOTHING put in writing is or ever has been private. So what's the big fuss about?

Apple product owners information on full blast. Anyone with minor computer skills can get all your information and Apple has known this for quite awhile.Your unique device identifier (UDID) which is attached to your personal information upon non-optional registration of Apple products.

The UDID is often accompanied by information that provides the identity and location of the person using the iphone, ipad, ipod touch. That information includes the user’s real name or user ID, as well as the time-stamped IP address and GPS coordinates.

“Apple’s privacy policy is opaque and confusing, but one thing is clear: it does not inform mobile device users that by providing application developers with their UDID, Apple enables them to put a name to highly personal and in many cases, embarrassing information, derived from app downloading activity and usage, and Internet browsing history, that would otherwise be anonymous.

Buyer beware...you are left twisting in the wind. Apple safeguards its proprietary information while yours is open pickings.

LOL!
You're quoting from a lawsuit as though it's a fact! It's a losing lawsuit too.

Yeah, if you had trouble getting past 7th grade!

So, go read this and tell us the confusing part.

One of many lawsuits that Apple users are willing to litigate their privacy and location sharing policies over. It's getting a lot harder for Apple to sweep all these allegations under the rug. Along with the human rights issues. The sum total is what is what buyers should beware of it not quotes.

At some point you become ridiculous defending Apple on all these security and file sharing breaches.  What do that have to do to you for you to wake up and realize you are being taken?

They have left your personal file, inside out on a desk for more than a year in a public place, and anyone who walked by was able to get a look through it with nobody watching over the paperwork securely.

How much worst could things get?

Without reading the comments I know that there will be those who will bash Apple as inferior. They will bash Steve Jobs. They will bash those who prefer to buy Apple products. I don't understand the viciousness.

insecurity? envy? some psychological shortcoming for sure.

it's sort of like the person who criticizes a stranger's relationship with someone when they are supposedly happily involved with someone themselves. the question would be "why would they care?".

I'm glad you enjoy it, I hope you keep on the path and start to sample lots more, and try well made products from other companies as well. Reading on the Kindle for example is a much nicer experience especially if you like to sit outdoors with your pup like I do.

Apple products have permanent security flaws...iPads, iPhone & iPod Touch that connects unique device identifier with user information and Facebook. All over the web--CNN Tech, Wired, etc. Permanent cookie can not be erased.

Apple used to be the underdog, but since they gained critical mass, so many people love to diss them to bolster their self esteem or something. If you prefer other products, great, but why all the hate?

F&F. No kidding. Who spends time on a board trashing a computer?

How can you not have better things to do? Something about Apple just ticks people off. Is it so hard to believe that people like a company with a reliable product and good customer service?

Because the geeks can't trick out the products and make them work better all by themselves...and they don't have buttons.

Only good tech products have lots of buttons, don't you get it? They mock us because we want products that work for us, not the other way around.

Apple is a wonderful underdog who became top dog. Steve jobs is one of the most important visionaries of our time. It is hard to believe he was fired from the company he founded and later came back to make it what it is today. This is a true American success story.

A company I'm working for bought me a Macbook Pro (13 in) for iPhone development, here's my opinion -

For what was paid, the specs are laughable, though I must say that OSX is snappy. I have Win7 installed on it as well - OSX is fully booted up and ready in 29 seconds, Win7 takes 1:34. Also, coming back from sleep is faster on OSX.

I like that I don't have to worry about viruses. Sure they might exist, or will exist, but not having to really worry about them right now is a win.

I hate that I need an adapter for the lightning bolt port to plug into an external monitor.

The edge of the thing is bloody sharp! I have large hands, so that might be it, but it starts to hurt resting my wrists against the edge to type.

The iLife suite is actually cooler than I thought it would be.

Gestures on the track-pad are surprisingly nifty, now it's hard to live without them on other notebooks

The fact that this will still have some resale value in 3 years is nice. (3 year-old MBPs still net $600+!)

Verdict: Worth it (barely). The only reason it's worth it, is because in 3 years, when a normal laptop would break down, I could sell this for half what my company paid! If resale wasn't so high, I would say that it's not worth it. If you don't plan on reselling, I wouldn't get one.

"I have Win7 installed on it as well - OSX is fully booted up and ready in 29 seconds, Win7 takes 1:34."

Not a fair comparison, that's because of Bootcamp. In fact, when you take two similarly-specced machines, OSX and Win7 boot in about the same time.

Just because you can say something, that doesn't make it true.

Bootcamp doesn't add that much overhead, and to prove it I used my work computer, which is spec'd a bit better than my Macbook pro (i5 processor, so the same, but 2X the ram).

I had it bypass login and I made sure no extra non-essential programs loaded on start-up. It took 52 seconds to get to desktop and an additional 17 seconds before it was responsive, so even if we take away the 17 second hourglass period after login, OSX still loads almost 2X faster on a lower-spec'd machine.

Not to mention, it took my so long to respond to this because it forced me to install updates upon shutdown (which took forever).

Sorry, I had some background processes that I didn't turn off. It only took an additional 5 seconds after login on my most recent attempt, and right at around 50 seconds to desktop. Still significantly slower than Mac.

I'm not against PCs at all, but Macs do have a few advantages. Also, when running under Windows my battery lasts about 4 hours max, but on Mac OSX the battery lasts well over 6 hours, probably even 7 hours.

I'm not saying that what you're saying is wrong or inaccurate but you can't really look at raw specs on a page look more at performance.

Side by side comparisons with a better specced PC does it keep up with or outpace it?

If so then the actual spec numbers are meaningless.
