More yoga studios are popping up all over New York that offer cheap or by-donation classes, a practice that seems to be more in keeping with the philosophy of yoga itself. Here are 5 places to do your downward dog without paying an arm and a leg.
This quiet oasis in South Williamsburg offers holistic body therapies and healing classes in addition to by-donation yoga sessions for students of all levels.
Where: 336 Grand Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
When: By-Donation Classes Are at 10am (M, T, F), 12pm (Tue), 3pm (Wed) Full schedule here.
Price: By-donation. Other classes are $17.
The New York chapter of this cheap yoga empire has five locations. Specializing in hot yoga, power vinyasa and power vinyasa flow, the spaces can get crowded but as founder Greg Gumicio told the NY Times, "Being able to do yoga with a foot in your face, that is a really powerful practice". Also, expect a more informal setting-- no "oms" and pop music on the stereo.
Where: East Village/St. Marks, 26th St., 27th Street, 38th Street, Brooklyn.
When: Depending location, seven days a week.
Price: Cost ranges from "suggested donation" to $10 a class.
All classes are "open-level" to accommodate any type of student. In addition to vinyasa flow classes, try out a restorative class or maybe take up pilates.

When: 10:30, 12:15, 12:30, 5:30, 6, 7 (M-F), 10:30, 1, 3, 5 (Sat-Sun)
Price: $12 Suggested Donation
Classes include masters, prenatal, restorative and regular flow. On Saturdays enjoy a session at noon with live music.

Strala gets a lot of press and has a very impressive lineup of teachers. Vanity Fair called Strala founder Tara Stiles the "coolest yoga instructor ever".
