Google Images With 'Sorting' Lets You Browse Pictures By Subject (VIDEO)

Google Images

Google is turning on a new feature aimed at making image searches simpler and more visual.

When performing a Google Images search, users will soon be able to sort photos and pictures "by subject," which groups image results into categories rather than presenting them en masse.

For example, if you're searching for "flowers," a single click will make Google sort the images according to flower variety. If you're searching for photos from a certain city, image search will sort the results based on landmarks or other characteristics to help you find the photo that's most relevant to you.

According to a post on the Official Google Blog, this feature will reach all Google users worldwide by the end of the week.

To locate the "sort by subject" feature, visit Google Images and scan the left-hand panel next to the image results field. If you don't see it yet, you will in the next few days.

Check out the video below to see Google's image-sorting feature in action.

Randomly clicking on Google Image search results is a great way to get your computer, including Macs, infected with viruses and malware.

I would rather they made sure their images did not have viruses.

Whatever you do, do not search for "test" and then click "search by subject."

I warned you.

Excellent, now I can sort my search results by the apparent age and gender of the cheerleaders.

That's great. Thanks, Google.

Now, how about you stop collecting non-customer data with your Android phones, hm?

Google images should bring back the file size on their search results. It's really annoying that they removed that information.

Last week I noticed that Google is also tracking where I am. I traveled to Atlanta. When I opened my gmail, there was an ad there for Atlanta area restaurants.

And you pay how much for access to gmail? Gosh, you should demand a refund and to talk with someone in customer service.

That's not tracking. You send your IP address to every website you visit. Your IP address generally indicates what city you're in. If Google didn't use your IP address to figure out where you are, they'd be serving Australian ads to American users, American ads to British users, etc.

Google is not using IP addresses for this. Google is using the MAC addresses (unique hardware addresses) of every wifi access point in your vicinity for this.

It is also storing those MAC addresses - without permission - in a world readable database.

It doesn't matter how it's done -- it's still tracking.

For years now Google has used the Google Image Labeler to do this: http://images.google.com/imagelabeler/

It uses the power of it's users, and made it a sort of game. Try it, it's kind of fun!

ah, the wikipedia of picture labeling; the amount of content goes up and the percentage of content editors goes down by...oh, let's say by 10%....there, it's in print, it must be true :-)

Yes, be Google's mechanical turk for more than just stamping out the ad dollars. Actually do their work for them, and describe it as fun.

I'm so glad I'm a gamma. I'd hate to be an alpha or a beta. They have soooo much responsibility!

That got me thinking. I'm not willing to try this out mysef, but what happens if you do an image search for "child porn"? Knock at the door 5 mins later?

I have my doubts as to the effectiveness of this, ultimately. But I guess we'll see by the end of the week.
07:04 PM on 05/09/2011
I wish they would get rid of the feature that gives you malware with your search results.
03:36 PM on 05/09/2011
I wish Google would get rid of the feature that expands the picture if you hover over it, or at least bump the time up so that every time I go to scroll down, I'm not just seeing a bigger pic. Put a 5 second delay on it.

1 second tops.  There is no way this new ADD generation will stand waiting 5 second for each picture to show an expanded version.
