Daniel Radcliffe Post-'Harry Potter' Plans, Child Stars & Directing

Daniel Radcliffe

What do you do after spending a decade as the world's most powerful wizard, earning over $100 million in the most successful film franchise of all time and developing into one of the most beloved celebrities of your time? It may seem like a tough question, Daniel Radcliffe seems confident that he'll be able to work his magic going into the future.

Speaking at the 92Y in New York City on Monday, Radcliffe held court with an audience excited to hear about his past, present and future. The city is already privy to one of his next big steps: while the world waits for the July premiere of his final Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," Radcliffe has charmed and delighted theater-goers this spring with his leading role in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying"; when he wasn't nominated for a Tony earlier in May, there were uproars of indignation. Radcliffe, modest as ever, laughed off the snub and said it didn't bother him.

As Movieline reports, Radcliffe did say that, at this point, he feels more comfortable on stage than on film, which hints at future Broadway endeavors. Not that "How To Succeed" was his first go-round on the Great White Way; he previously starred in "Equus," both in London and New York.

While he continues to act in film -- his new paranormal thriller, "The Woman In Black," was just picked up for distribution -- he's also hoping to get behind the camera.

“Films would be my first love I think, just because I grew up there. I would love to one day definitely get behind the camera and direct. I think that’s maybe where I end up,” he said? "I’d certainly like to do something in that direction.”

But don't expect him to make the next "Potter."

“It wouldn’t be an epic fantasy, I’d like to make small films, I think," he told the crowd.

As he looks toward a future of success, Radcliffe reflected on the obstacles he faced while growing up in public, and said that if he can make the transition, he doesn't want to hear excuses from child stars who go wayward.

“Here’s the thing: if I can do it — in the biggest film franchise of all-time in terms of grosses — no one else has any excuses," he warned. "I just want the next generation of child actors to not have to answer all those bloody questions in interviews, ‘So, how long do you expect this to last?’ Essentially, that is what we get asked. A lot. I have had that phrased that way. So I just want the next lot of kids who want to act not to have to deal with those questions.”

Robert Pattinson, Demi Moore, and Emma Watson are child stars who made it. It's all about morphing into the manly/womanly idea of sexy after the cute child looks and growing as an actor with it. Some child stars don't evolve physically or career-wise, that's the problem.

I think if she writes another one, it'll either be a prequel about Dumbledore and his boyfriend long before Harry was born or a spin-off featuring Luna and Neville or something... Harry's story had a pretty no-loose-end ending in the last book and that story, I think, is done.

And it's not like either of them need the money.

Luna is one of my favorite characters in the books and the actress that plays her is wonderful. I would love to see some kind of spin off with her.

I don't know. I'm really hoping she writes about Harry and Ginny's kids more than anything. That's why I was thinking there may be another book in the works.

When Harry Potter is over, so is Daniel Radcliffe. He was lucky to fall into that roll. How many child stars are part of a huge franchise from pre-teen to now?

Really? Maybe in a biggest-ever-grossing-movie-franchise-kind-of-way. But, he can act and isn't just a movie star. He isn't afraid of the theatre, so I think your prediction is callous and premature.

He's really not that great an actor. What else have we seen him do? Just because he thinks he should of won a Tony, doesn't make it so. I don't think my prediction is callous and premature. He's forever typecast as Harry Potter.

BTW - The author made that movie. People stand in line overnight to get the book. Any kid could have played that role.

He has been in two plays that has done really well. The films that I have seen him in proves that he is a great actor. "My boy Jack" was a good film. I like him very much, as he doesn't seem to take himself too seriously and seems quite relaxed and laid back as a person. He is a great role model for what a child actor could and should aspire to as far as behavior is concerned. I have no doubt that he will make an easy transition to adult stardom.

He's very mature for his age. I just know he's going to be around for years to come and I will be there anticipating his every film. Truly talented.

Pardon the double post. This one had to be approved - I can't imagine what word tripped off the gezstapo, so I made another one.

Why do so many child actors grow up to be strange looking? Do the features that make a child extra cute when they're young make them more likely to be strange looking when they're older?
12:06 AM on 05/11/2011
I think he looks exactly the same, except for the obvious facial hair. Eyes and bone structure are the same. Weird, not at all like Bristol.

"What you see is what you get"

Guy Incognito: "Without sounding harse, Radcliffe was lucky to get a part with
a very lucrative paycheck, based on an established property,
that has been successful beyond anyone's dreams. He could walk
away from it and earn some nice residuals. He also seems to
have come out of it with a very level head, and bravo to him
for it. Most child stars (especially in television) saw very
little beyond their trust fund salary - if their parents didn't
squander it - and probably see virtually nothing in residuals,
being very low in the pecking order, and, unfortunately, don't
have the emotional stability to handle the pressures that come
with fame at such a young age, and what happens when it's
suddenly over." - 'nuff said.

I, personally, think he's darling. However, looks are not everything. By all accounts, he is nice, hard-working, humble and well-rounded. That is a lot more than you can say about the majority of our young celebrities.

Absolutely. He is cute, and I believe he will be very handsome in just a short few years. He is also so completely self-deprecating, seems to have such a solid sense of self and is willing to take risks most of his fellow actors would never even consider (Equus, anyone?) and that is highly attractive.

Plus, I really enjoy his acting, so he is more than ok in my book.

he's gay and itching to come out
however liberal hollywood does not allow its gay actors to come out and behave worse than the republican party if a gay actor comes out

all the while these hollywood liberals ask for raising taxes here in CA while they are shooting abroad for tax breaks . no wonder the gay and straight folk working in CA is so unemployed

The Harry Potter actors learned how to really act. They worked on a project that had a developing moral/spiritual theme, and they weren't part of Hollywood. I expect Radcliffe and the rest of the crew to do just fine.
