Google Music

At Tuesday's Google I/O conference, the company took the wraps off its long-awaited cloud music service, Music Beta by Google.

The service lets you upload your music library to Google's cloud and stream tunes on your Android devices and your computer.

Playlists you create in the cloud will automatically sync to all your devices. You can even listen to music while you're offline. According to a post on the Google Blog: "[W]e automatically store your most recently played music on your Android device and you can choose to make specific albums or playlists available when you're not connected."

Music Beta by Google also features an "Instant Mix" playlist creator, similar to iTunes's Genius feature, which mixes and matches similar songs and artists that the user might enjoy.

The service will be available by invitation only in the U.S. and will be free during the beta period.

Take a look at the video (below) to get a feel for Google's new music service.

OK--someone in the know please help me out. I thought that Google Music was also going to be a music purchasing service as well. All of the articles I've read, however, only mention cloud storage/access. What am I missing?

All my mobile devices sync when I plug them in to charge.
And they play music offline.

We grew up with one thing in the house that played music, now I have 4. Is that not enough?
Does everyone have nine devices now they need to have all the music synced on? Did I miss the revolution?

I'm torn between this Cloud business.

On the plus side, having your computer backed up on a Cloud somewhere is like a dream. Lose your laptop, break it, floods, earthquakes -- WHO CARES -- all your data lives somewhere safe.

:-)

On the negative side, how easy is it for these companies to mine your private files and sell said info? Or some 'hackers' do the same?

:-(

Of music, I'm a fan of the recently 'paused' ZUMOCAST. Instead of uploading your music to a server, it makes your computer a server to your portable devices. It was recently acquired by Android (I believe) and is on hold. Maybe the above story is why.

I'm sure that's temporary.

I really hope so, it sucks to see all these cool new products being US only.

Hopefully this will end music industry control of the Internet.

The music industry does not control the internet. If they did, iTunes and file sharing would have never happened.

Haha, I agree with Dodd, are you mentally challenged..
