Madoff's Wine Collection To Be Auctioned

First Posted: 05/10/11 03:20 PM ET Updated: 07/10/11 06:12 AM ET

Good wine often needs some time in the cellar before its ready to drink, but given that Bernie Madoff has a prison term of 150 years, it is safe to say that he will not able to make use of his collection (seized from two properties). On May 18, Morrell & Company will auction off 58 lots of Madoff's wine and spirits collection, which is estimated at around $15,000.

His collection includes:

  • a case of 1996 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild ($3,200-$3,800)

  • six bottle of 1990 Chateau Beychevelle ($350-$480)

  • one bottle of 1964 Chateau Cheval Blanc ($500-$750)

  • six bottles of 1997 Antinori Tignanello ($850-$1,200)

Certain bottles wouldn't typically "pass muster" for a Morell auction, but they are included for their relevancy as conversation pieces rather than for their quality of wine. The proceeds from the sale, made possible by the U.S. Marshals Office, will go to Madoff's victims as part of a "general recovery effort" according to the Morell website.

They are completely ignorant of space-war tactics.

Why should the government be entitled to it? This is a case of theft and fraud. He stole from these people and they deserve to get back what they can from him.

BTW, why don't you consider them victims?

I hope you don't wake up one morning and find out that you are broke because someone scammed you.

From what I have heard, the Chinese will swoop in and buy up all. The Chinese Oil Company
executives were recently exposed to buying up wines around the world for their "private" collections. "comrade" cares a little too much for own creature comforts.

Anyone thinking like I am thinking? Did he drink the wine then fill the bottle with cheap wine and re-cork it?

Cheap wine. Surprise. Probably for guests.
