Republican Lawmakers Offer Disaster Victims Prayers, But Not Federal Aid

WASHINGTON -- Republican lawmakers have been quick to rush to the assistance of disaster victims with that priceless commodity, prayer, but when it comes to tangible assets, they've been a bit less spirited.

An email circulated by the office of Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-Tex.) and obtained by The Huffington Post asked lawmakers to co-sponsor H. Res 254, a straightforward measure encouraging Congress and the American public to pray for the victims of the recent disasters in the United States.

From the email sent out to congressional offices on Tuesday:

Severe tornadoes and record amounts of flooding in the South, Southeast, and lower Midwest have taken hundreds of lives and caused thousands of injuries. Property damage could reach into the billions of dollars, uprooting entire communities throughout the region.

The Southern Plains, lower Mississippi Valley, and Southwest have been experiencing the worst drought conditions in decades, leading to wildfires that have burned more than 2.2 million acres and caused massive losses in agricultural production. These wildfires have resulted in deaths, the destruction of homes and business, and severe financial hardship.

Many communities have been devastated by these disasters, but have maintained a spirit of resiliency, hope, and faith. It is only appropriate that Congress and the American people come together in prayer for the victims of the disasters and their families, and for the fair weather conditions that these regions desperately need.

The message was signed by Neugebauer, as well as Reps. Stevan Pearce (R-N.M.) and Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.).

All three lawmakers voted for the House FY 2011 continuing resolution, which included significant cuts to funding for the federal response to weather, climate and natural disasters (The cuts were no longer in the bill by the time it went through the Senate and was signed by the President).

For example, funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's state and local programs was slashed $783.3 million below FY 2010 levels. The FEMA Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program lost $35 million. The part of FEMA's budget for emergency food and shelter was cut $100 million, and Assistance to Firefighter Grants lost $510 million.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration lost $454.3 million in the House's continuing resolution. In March, the agency warned that insufficient funds budgeted for its next generation of polar orbiting satellites could potentially weaken the accuracy of its weather forecasting, especially pertaining to severe events such as blizzards and hurricanes.

The National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, lost $126 million from FY 2010 levels in the House bill.

"This is the congressional equivalent of having a mortgage lender take your house and then tell all his friends how bad he feels for you," said a Democratic operative who used to work in Congress. "The fact that these guys have no sense of irony or shame is just revolting."

Neugebauer's office declined comment, and Pearce and Bachus did not respond.

Is it wrong to hope for a natural disaster that would wipe Washington, DC OFF THE MAP forever?

The residents of Louisiana knew republicans were snakes when they voted for them. Are they surprised they the repubs are cold blooded. Wow!

I am from Baton Rouge and the numerous Barak Obama supporters that live in Louisiana
should NOT be lumped together with these other niwits.

We love you Mr. President we really do!!

I'd say that the reason they opened the spillway and flooded these poor people out was ultimately to save money, and of course to avoid political pressure resulting from flooding big cities full of voters. Somebody owes these people something. To offer prayers and nothing more is clearly wrong.

FEMA is no longer the agency that should be addressing disaster issues and here's an humorous and thought provoking perspective why...

The Power of Prayer:

A man who was an Elder in his church and known as a saintly, devout individual lived in a flood zone. He was on his porch, praying, when his neighbors drove by. THey stopped and said, "Come on! We have room for you. Get out before the flood comes!" He replied, "I trust in the Lord. He will provide for me."

The flood waters started rising, and the man had to flee to the second floor of the house. A couple of people floated by in a boat, identified themselves as a rescue team, and implored the man to come with them. Again, he proclaimed his faith that he would be taken care of by divine intervention.

The waters rose higher, and he was forced to climb out to his roof. A helicopter descended with a ladder trailing, and a National Guardsman yelled down to tell him to grab the ladder so he could be taken out. Once more, he declined and went back to his prayers.

The waters covered the house's roof and the saintly man drowned. When he arrived in heaven, he said, "What happened Lord? I put my complete faith on you and I still drowned!" A resonant voice filled the space around him and said. "I sent you a car, a boat and a helicopter. What more did you want?"

If prayers were an effective means for dealing with disasters, you would think the Red states in particular would have been spared the disasters in the first place. As someone has pointed out, there's a reason they are called "acts of God".

Prayer without aid is lip service without substance.

Prayer has always been the republican response. Lets let the church take care of everything. That wouldn't work even if churches had the money. They don't. If they had the money, you wouldn't get any if you were not exactly like them. I just don't see a chistian church giving money to poor black families. The republicans must see things differently.

Most of the affected states are red states anyway. They voted in these whackjobs, will blame Obama, and vote these same lunatics in again. They are getting exactly what they asked for...Prayers and no big govt. assistance. Yummy, I hope they like crow.

Bootstraps! In response to all of the emergencies in the red states of merika FEMA is answering teabaggers aid requests with truckloads of Bootstraps made in China. Unfortunately many of the boxed instructions were for ‘Chinstraps’ so when baggers attached them to their cowboy hats or ball caps and then tried to pull themselves up all you could hear was ‘aaaggg *choke gasp* plop’. The recall was avoided and replacement instructions for any survivors may be downloaded online.

First time something happens they all whine for FEMA and the ‘Guard’ and the Corps of Engineers and all their supposed ‘soshalist’ groups to come save them and give them free gubmint money to rebuild their lives. Now the repug/baggers in congress will only offer them prayers! Hahahaha Y’all got what y’all voted for in yer broke red states! Good luck!

And as a Californian living in a Red State, I pray Georgia will start embracing and funding such radical ideas like environmental regulation, urban planning, alternative energy and transportation.

Red states definitely ride CA's coat-tails in innovation and public safety. As I like to say when I open a new box of Christmas lights and read the little made-in-china warning label - "why do christmas lights only cause cancer in California?"
