Bernard Hopkins: Donovan McNabb Isn't Black Enough

First Posted: 05/12/11 10:39 AM ET Updated: 07/12/11 06:12 AM ET

Bernard Hopkins Donovan Mcnabb

10 days before his fight against Jean Pascal in Philadelphia, Bernard Hopkins took the time to rip former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

Marcus Hayes of the Philadelphia Daily News reported on Tuesday that Hopkins verbally attacked McNabb, implying that he isn't black or tough enough.

"Forget this," Hopkins said while reportedly pointing to his own skin. "He's got a suntan. That's all."

Hopkins criticized McNabb for having a "privileged childhood in suburban Chicago," claiming that he isn't as tough as Michael Vick and Terrell Owens.

"McNabb? Great. Skills? Throw the ball? Great. But there was something missing," Hopkins said. "Vick? He understands. And T.O. - same cloth."

McNabb's publicist said that the quarterback would have no comment.

According to Hopkins, if you're black and don't come from poverty or experience jail or being raised by a single parent, then you're not really "BLACK". That must make Hopkins' kids the BIGGEST SELLOUTS in the next 10-15 years then right? And Hopkins living in his BIG mansion and having all that CASH-MONEY in the bank?? That makes him Whiter than Mitt Romney then doesn't it? If Bernard Hopkins wants to stay a "Black" person according to HIS definition then he needs to fight for nothing and stay poor and father lots of illegitimate kids and go back to jail!!
Is THIS Bernard Hopkins' LOGIC??

Bernard Hopkins is legitimately one of the dumbest people in sports.

In addition, what does "black enough" mean? As I would categorize McNabb as a "black man," and I'm guessing that he would describe himself as such, how can he not be "black" enough?

Is there a criteria for a man being "white enough?" I better look into it quickly or I may find that I haven't been categorizing myself appropriately. All of this time I've I've been "off-white" or "eggshell" and just didn't know it. Oh the confusion this must have caused our racist fellow citizens!

I bet B-Hop would say if only McNabb was black enough he would have won the Superbowl.

I guess you have to be a criminal and commit multiple counts of aggravated robbery to black enough eh Hopkins? You just set your race back a few years meat head

How can you defend Hopkins here? Please explain, did you read his comments?

In a nation where racism plays out from certain media figures on a daily basis, why is everyone bent out of shape over this? Did all forget the brouhaha when McNabb was benched last season?
Philly fans, including one Bernard Hopkins have been ugly regarding McNabb for years. Those people posting here acting as though they have not heard this before are lying or are hearing about Hopkins for the first time.

So Bernard thinks you have to grow up poor to be black? He's ignorant.

That is not what he said. If you really don't get the context, then just treat it as athlete talk.

McNabb seems to be a magnet for racially tinged language. Whatever did he do to deserve such special treatment?
08:13 PM on 05/13/2011
Donovan McNabb has no heart? Didn't McNabb play an ENTIRE second half of a game with a broken leg? AND win the game? Sure he's got no Lombardi Trophy but then again neither does Dan Marino or Boomer Esiason or Rudy from Notre Dame lore!!

So Hopkins is just angry that McNabb didn't suck his @#$% when they met at some celeb event. So what? So just because his ego wasn't stroked he's going to try to ruin a guy's public relations career by saying junk?
04:10 PM on 05/13/2011
Why the hate for McNabb? He's seems like such a nice guy...
What is "isn't black enough"...Hopkins just insulted a whole race of people, including me...he's pretty much implying acting more ignorant (as he is doing) is synonymous to being black...He is truly ignorant...

This is what's messed up with our culture. White people are never questioned for being white, whether they are business men, hipsters, athletes, whatever. One the other hand, no variation is allowed in the black community. You either portray the thug stereotype, or you are not black. Why does being black have to be associated with all negative characteristics.

I for one, am black (I guess by skin color only) and was raised in a suburban area my whole life. I was called white by both the white kids and black kids (who were from the same area as I, but decided to take on the stereotypes) because I acted like a kid who was from where I was from, not some abstract stereotype that I only could have picked up from watching tv

"This is what's messed up with our culture."

Wrong.

That's what's messed up with Bernard Hopkins and people who think like him.

Get it right.

It would be wrong for me to make presumptions about you, whether you are white or black, whether you grew up around a diverse crowd or whatever, but about this you are sorely mistaken. I think about any issue (especially racial) to take an absolutist stance that something isn't going on because you are not familiar with it, is ignorant. You may be one of those people who thinks we live in a post-rac.ism country, and that many of the attacks on Obama are because of his policies, not because of his race. Heres a question for you? Why is there an oft used term, Unc.le Tom, if many black people don't ascribe certain traits to "acting white" or not being truly black? Tell me, sociology expert

No variation? The variation found in the Black community practically defines modern popular culture. I think it is accurate to point out that variation a thing that American seems to frown upon and particularly so when it is clearly identifiable as a product of Black culture. Variation allows for Hopkins' statements, and those who agree with him. McNabb himself chose not to address it and that is all there is to it.
The real ignorance is the response of those who are thinking that Bernard Hopkins is doing anything significant other that what he has always done. Talk sh*t.
