Sarah Palin: Common Invitation To White House Lacked 'Class And Decency' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 05/12/11 10:52 AM ET Updated: 07/12/11 06:12 AM ET

Sarah Palin took issue with the White House inviting Grammy Award-winning rapper and actor Common, born Lonnie Rashin Lynn Jr., to a poetry event hosted by the first lady on Wednesday night.

During an appearance on Fox News' "On the Record," Palin said, "The White House's judgment on inviting someone who would glorify cop killing during Police Memorial Week, of all times, you know, the judgment, it's just so lacking of class and decency."

The AP reports on the event:

Common, who is considered fairly tame as rappers go, is known for rhymes that tend to be socially and politically conscious.

He was on his best behavior Wednesday night.

The rapper opened his performance with cuts of words from Martin Luther King Jr. and spoke of walking into the White House with "love on my sleeve." His performance gave nods to the challenges of crime and violence that face children, to gangsters and beacons of light for those in dark alleys, and celebrated the rise of Barack Obama.

It ended with "one King's dream, he was able to Barack us."

Other performers included former poets laureate Billy Collins and Rita Dove, singer Aimee Mann and comedian-musician Steve Martin and his bluegrass group the Steep Canyon Rangers.

In weighing in on the matter, Palin said despite her criticism she's "not a proponent of stifling any kind of free speech." She added, "I'm not anti-rap. In fact, like Bret Baier, I know the lyrics to 'Rapper's Delight,' too. But I am saying just common decency in the White House -- wouldn't we like to see a reflection of all that is wonderful and great, a shining city on a hill that the White House is supposed to be, with events inside of that house that reflect the patriotism and the decency and the influence of America."

The invitation of Common to the White House drew criticism from other Republicans, such as Karl Rove. HuffPost's Jason Linkins reported on controversy swirling over the matter prior to the event earlier this week.

"I would say that, while the president doesn't support the kind of lyrics that have been raised here, we do think that some of these reports distort what Mr. Lynn stands for, more broadly, in order to stoke controversy," said White House spokesman Jay Carney in response to criticism. "One of the things the president appreciates is the work Mr. Lynn has done with children, especially in Chicago, trying to get them to focus on poetry as opposed to some of the negative influences of life on the street."

This "scandal" would be worth it if it caused some of these idiot racists to actually listen to some Common. Of course they won't. They will just take FOX NEWS' word that Common wants to kill some cops.

Palin has a daughter out of wedlock and it is OK to parade her all around on the campaign to show that it is OK. President Obama can invite anyone he wants to the White House, it is his house isn't it. People just don't understand that we have a great president.

We might as well face the truth on this issue. Obama directed Holder to drop charges on the Black Panthers that were obviously guilty of Voter Intimidation for one reason, he is a racist. When he called the police 'Stupid' that had to deal with his buddy the Screaming Nutty Professor who insulted Police officers, he acted in a racist manner. When Obama and his followers accused anyone that wouldn't vote for him as racist, that smear was in fact 'racist'. Our President has deep racist feelings against whites, Asians or Hispanice that oppose his policies, views, etc.

It sends a great message to the kids of America when the President invites a pro-Cop killer Rapper to the White House to entertain his guests. But the media will give Obama as much cover as possible as usual. Anyone who doesn't approve of having a pro-cop killer Rapper entertain at the White House must hate all Rappers. It's a weak rebuttal but the media will run with it.

a pro-cop killer rapper>? you have no clue who Common is or what he is about. All you have is your FOX NEWS talking points and they don't hold water with anyone familiar with reality. Have a nice day.

So where's your prove that he's a pro cop killer. Which when Bodycount wrote it had to do with corrupt cops beating up innocent people.

The rejection of Hip-Hop by the Right is mostly racist -But it also indicates the Right's not embracing the modern world.

Tastes in Music are now 'racist' if people don't like Hip-Hop? Does this mean that people who hate country music are also 'racists'? I understand your desperation in playing the race card on this issue but tastes in Music change with age and exposure to new forms of entertainment. I know people of different political views that have different likes in Music, some conservatives do like Hip-hop some don't. Nice try doc but the race card won't fly on this one.

what? racist? its just MUSIC Dr. whatever you call yourself. Dont cheapen racism to this. Im getting nauseous ..

name for me the top 5 singles on the hip hop circuit Dr.INEEDTOMENTIONIMADOCTOR. Oh.. sounds like Dr.poet-activistt is adding racism and cluelessness to his hyphenated motto. ..
Now the right is not embracing the modern world becuase theyre not loving hip hop -- which modern world do you live in? Im sure there are many black folk who are 'racist' using your rules, becuase they dont choose to wind down the day with a Brahms Double Concerto . Let others choose the music they wish to hear and please leave your moralizing lecturing big government directives at the door.

Just to make sure I wasn't lying about there being no random photos of her with her kids, I just tried to find some. There were none. Zero. The entire internet, and I couldn't find a photo of her with her kids that was not at a photo op or appearance. That's sad. Maybe Common spends more time with kids than she does.

So what they're saying is that the show is more important than the reality, right? If this guy works with kids, and tries to keep them from getting involved in negative influences, then he's a bad guy because of what he raps about in a song. Eminem can raise kids who aren't his, including a brother that he rescued from foster care all day long, 24-7, and because he sings "dirty lyrics' he's a bad guy, too. Palin, on the other hand, tries to perform a good game, but she likes to shoot animals from helicopters, throw rifle scopes on a political opponent, and is never seen in random photos with her kids...She's one of the good guys. The facade is more important! I'm blowing raspberries at her right now.
