Mikael Granlund Goal: Sick Lacrosse Move Lifts Finland Over Russia In World Championships (VIDEO)

First Posted: 05/14/11 12:37 AM ET Updated: 01/16/12 08:16 AM ET

You have to see this one to believe it. It's already been dubbed a "goal for the ages," "the goal of the year" and the "lacrosse goal" you can't miss.

Mikael Granlund, a 19-year-old forward for Finland, scored a goal in the second period of the World Hockey Championships semifinal that became an instant YouTube hit.

In a seamless full-speed move, Granlund lifted the puck into the air with his stick, dragged several feet in mid-air, and swatted it into the net, making the goalie look silly, and giving Finland a 1-0 lead. They never looked back, winning the game 3-0 Friday for a date with Sweden in the gold medal game.

That is affectionately known as the Michigan move... a player at the University of Michigan did that about 10 years ago, and most hockey players (myself included) figured out how to do it, though most of us never got the chance in an actual game

well do it in a high pressure world championship semifinal game against the worlds top ranking team

Granlund has also done it before at the worlds u18 and as a junior:

Though to attempt that (and succeed) in WC semi final at 0-0 v Russia is amazing.

Whether it was 'hyperbolic nonsense', or a 'Michigan', it certainly was pretty.

Totally amazing. But it looks like a cheating kind of move, somehow.

Still as sexy as ever.

As long as where the stick is contacting the puck stays below the cross-bar of the net, it`s perfectly legal.

best "lacrosse" style goal yet. he actually did it slightly different then the others. love it and he will probably be in the N within a few years

Mikael Granlund is already a professional, in a sense that he earns his living by playing ice-hockey and that is the only livelyhood he has. He earned already in year 2009, about 63 000 $, while playing Finnish pro league (He was then only 17 years old!). http://www.mtv3.fi/urheilu/jaakiekko/uutiset.shtml/2010/11/1216460/kuka-tienaa-mitakin-lue-sm-liigan-suuri-palkkavertailu. I'm quite sure he made even more in the last year 2010 (double?) and that is probably peanuts comparing how much he will earn with Wilds.

Here's the significantly more impressive version from a Mike Leg of the Michigan Wolverines in 1996. Much more difficult and effortlessly executed.

I love this.. As others have noted, Mike Legg did this for Michigan back in 1996 and Sidney Crosby did it again in 2006 before he was in the NHL.

The fact that Granlund wasn't the first to do it doesn't take anything away from it. It's more for people who may be interested in seeing other instances where this has been done.

Any Golden Gopher hockey fan knows that Mike Legg from Michigan pulled off the same kind of goal against Minnesota's Steve Debuss in the NCAA hockey playoffs in 1996 ending the Gophers' season. Exact same thing.
