UPDATE: Hundreds of fans showed up to cheer Colbert at the FEC. See story here.

WASHINGTON -- As part of his continuing crusade to expose the lunacy of the nation's campaign finance regulations, Comedy Central satirist Stephen Colbert is rallying supporters at the Federal Election Commission Friday afternoon.

Colbert announced his visit on Thursday night's show, and the following day he was barraging his 2.3 million Twitter followers with entreaties to join him at the FEC at 4 p.m., as he takes the next step in forming his own political action committee, ColbertPAC.

Political action committees have long had an outsized role in the electoral process, but recent Supreme Court decisions have ushered in a whole new era, in which groups known as "SuperPACs" can accept unlimited corporate contributions.

Colbert this afternoon is filing yet another piece of paperwork required to get his SuperPAC off the ground, although ironically it's not the FEC that has been pushing back: It's Comedy Central's parent company, Viacom that's trying to shut him down.

Colbert was initially going to form a regular political action committee -- until Viacom told him to cease and desist, on the grounds that the FEC would consider Colbert's use of Viacom resources as an illegal in-kind contribution.

Colbert then consulted -- on air -- with Trevor Potter, a lawyer and former FEC chairman who now runs the pro-reform Campaign Finance Center. Potter explained that, if Colbert formed a SuperPAC instead, Viacom could legally make unlimited in-kind contributions. Colbert proceeded to file the appropriate paperwork.

On Wednesday, Colbert announced that Viacom had once put the kibosh on his plans.

Potter, again on the show, explained why: "They are nervous that Viacom is going to end up making an illegal corporate contribution to your PAC," he said. The issue is that "there might be a complaint or an investigation about whether they showed enough and they would have to turn over their internal bookkeeping and potentially reveal Viacom secrets," Potter said.

"How do the guys on Fox get away with it?" Colbert responded.

Potter explained that they get an exemption because they're a media organization: "The media exemption says that if you're a broadcast station, not owned by a candidate or a party" –- "I'm not!" Colbert interjected –- "and you're reporting the news in your normal way of going about business, then you're exempt. You're not making a corporate contribution when you talk about candidates and politics."

So Colbert on Friday is filing a request for an advisory opinion from the FEC, hoping it will grant him a media exemption.

The FEC press office said they've been told to expect Colbert around 3:30.

"He's just going to walk into the lobby like anybody else," said spokeswoman Mary Brandenberger.

Watch Colbert and Potter talking about the media exemption issue:

Not only is colbert and Daily getting Long in the tooth, their acts got old back in 2004.

Please come up with something new. I know you think you can keep beating this horse because you think your Prepubescent viewers have the attention span and long term memory of an insect.

But please have you no personal standards.

You two are horrid cheerleaders for a Bush wannabe President (Obama for the viewers).

Please stop, let the kids move on to SpongeBob already

The Colbert Report debuted in 2005 which makes it tough to be stale in 2004.

Historical revisionism is nothing new, and certainly nothing of which to be proud.

They have standards, skewer anyone who does anything skewer worthy. Granted, FOX is twice a good, adhering, as they do to the double standard.

President Obama may have many aspirations, but being another GW Bush is not likely one of them.

WE'll never stop, not until they pry the pens or keyboards from our cold dead hands.

This just might well be Colbert's finest hour. And the nation could come out a winner too. It's sad that it still takes a public flogging to rein in greed.

The Supreme Court we have now is a public and private disgrace. I've never in my life had anything except a positive respect for this branch of government, until now. When every single decision they hand down is along strict party lines, it is clear, at least to me, that they are making partisan political statements instead of representing all the people and our constitution.

Some how, they lost their way; and it shames this great Nation.

Colbert is saying that the Supreme Court decision makes it easier for the very wealthy to contribute money to political causes.

Colbert is worth $45 million. He is one of the super, elite wealthy and yet he has so far been unable to even form a PAC so that he can donate over $10,000.
That doesn't sound easy to me.

Of course Colbert could easily start his own super pack using his own resources. The only thing holding him back is a bigger, wealthier group, Viacom is telling him that to do so he would have to give up his job. Which is exactly the undo influence that he is skewering.

Colbert can start his own media company sell the show to VIACOM as a News Show and not Comedy and then have 2 shows at which he can kick them in the .....
04:20 PM on 05/16/2011
You mean since last week when he started this process, he hasn't succeeded yet? Yeah, must be that the rich have no clout. That can be the ONLY explanation.

Colbert and Daily take advantage of our impressionable youth, by making Obama supporting news fun for kids by using bright shiny colors and quickly changing the viewers subject matter every 7 seconds or less.

This has bee a tried and true philosophy for decades on kids shows and saturday morning cartoons.

Fox does it at a adolescent level but it is most pronounced on Colbert and daily. That does not speak well for our youth of today.

They use the same jokes and same facial expressions, OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER....

To huge laughs every time, I thought there was a laugh track but later found out otherwise, PATHETIC.

It has to do with attention deficit disorder too. Information is bombarding the public at faster and faster speeds and frequencies,.There is no need to focus on anything longer than a few seconds.
I like political satire, but satire is usually directed at the powerful political leaders. These shows are so blatantly pro democratic party, that it seems like a political commercial.

If you watched the shows, you would know that they go after the Dems as well when they screw up. It is just that the Grand Old Pickle Party screws up so much that there isn't enough time allocated to cover it up. Truth hurts, doesn't it?

This has to do more with satire. And I don't think it dumbs down kids at all. More importantly, kids don't watch Colbert and Stewart.

Two studies have been published (one over 2 years age and one more recent). It asked people about current events. Those that got the most questions correct watched Colbert and Stewart! And Fake news came in last! !! !! !! !! !

This, IMHO, is a super way to learn. And if anyone is Pathetic, it is you because you just can't stand it that this type of news enlightens people in a way they can best retain the message.

Oooohhh fake news came in last. You either are related to the geniuses or you make money off of them somehow. Because your excuse is more like and ad for the show to make the teenagers feel smarter than other teens that watch this ab@rtion of a show. Marketeering would suffice. schill much for these jokes much?

Go Colbert-we are all tired of the secret corporate money using misinformation to affect out elections even when it hurts us. Most don't have the time to research who these add buys are from and why they are trying to hurt one candidate or another. It is about corporate influence for the most part. It has to stop even if it means a constitutional amendment. Any Republican has shown their true colors in pushing for privatisation of Medicare instead of fixing it. Once bundled payment replace fee for service we will see costs going way down. In addition, at least we need a public option and negotiated payment with pharma. This program will save a trillion over ten yrs once implemented and does not count other money savings included in HC reform.

No one, it would be required to spend money independent of any campaign for office. Though it could still support or oppose any candidate or issue it could not legally donate to or coordinate with any campaign.

Colbert is happy because people rallying around him, the people will soon realize what satirist means in letter and spirit. There is a saying ' do not trust a child with fire equipments, he burn down the house and do not trust a satirist with money because he will make a cartoon of joke out of you".

Colbert is the perfect person not only to make a cartoon of others and the money contributors but out of his own too physically.

No, they're court jesters who tell the truth with humor. You'd have to demonstrate that they're left anything to make such a blanket statement.

Of course, as Colbert famously noted, the truth has a liberal bias.

Colbert is truly fearless. Look back at interviews with birthers - Colbert exposes them for the clowns they are were as the respected media institutions dance around the topic and give credence to absolute lies.
