Pakistan Parliament Slams U.S. For Raid That Killed Osama Bin Laden

MUNIR AHMED   05/13/11 11:23 PM ET   AP

ISLAMABAD — Members of Pakistan's Parliament slammed the United States on Saturday for the raid that killed al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden on their soil, but also demanded that an independent commission probe the debacle instead of one led by the country's powerful armed forces.

The parliamentary resolution followed a rare, private session with top military officials that began Friday and ran past midnight. During the session, Pakistani intelligence chief Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha indicated he'd be willing to resign if lawmakers demanded it, but no one did.

In fact, it appeared lawmakers from the weak civilian government and the opposition essentially closed ranks behind a military establishment humiliated by the May 2 U.S. Navy SEALs attack on bin Laden's compound in the northwest garrison city of Abbottabad. Pakistani leaders have insisted they had no idea bin Laden was staying in the city.

Few lawmakers were willing to discuss details of the confidential session, but the hours it covered suggested that the generals were questioned extensively – a rarity in a country where the military operates largely beyond civilian control and has staged multiple coups.

Intelligence chief Pasha spoke at length, and defended the military's record in fighting Islamist extremist movements, some of which have staged numerous deadly attacks on Pakistani soil.

Pasha admitted negligence in tracing bin Laden, but also noted that Pakistan had cooperated with the U.S. in helping kill or capture numerous bin Laden allies, severely diminishing al-Qaida's terrorist infrastructure.

Bin Laden was like a "dead person despite being alive," federal Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan quoted the intelligence chief as saying.

Pasha rarely talks to media on the record. The army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, was present, but there were no accounts of him speaking.

According to Awan, an air force official said the military learned "American planes were loaded with bombs" and in the air in Afghanistan, ready to retaliate if Pakistani planes went after the U.S. helicopters sent after bin Laden.

The U.S. has said it sent extra helicopters into Pakistani airspace to provide backup for the Navy SEALs.

The military leaders assured lawmakers that Pakistan's nuclear arsenals are safe and promised to improve the country's air defenses, Awan said.

The parliamentary resolution that emerged from the gathering termed the U.S. raid as an attack on Pakistan's sovereignty. It also criticized American drone strikes in Pakistan's militant-riddled tribal areas, which many suspect Pakistan secretly allows while publicly denouncing.

The resolution also called for an independent body to look into the bin Laden raid. Earlier in the week, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said the military would lead the probe, but that upset opposition leaders.

Awan told state-run Pakistan TV that lawmakers had expressed full confidence in the country's security forces.

Pakistan became an ally of the U.S. in the fight against Islamist militants after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, but the relationship has long been an uneasy one, with mutual distrust that has only deepened since the bin Laden killing.

Although American officials have said so far they have seen no evidence the top Pakistani military officials knew of bin Laden's whereabouts, the U.S. has long harbored suspicions that elements of Pakistan's armed and intelligence services provide assistance to some militant groups battling Western troops in Afghanistan.

Pakistani officials deny any links to such groups, including the feared Haqqani network in eastern Afghanistan.

But analysts say Pakistan may be maintaining ties to some insurgents, including the Haqqanis and Afghan Taliban leaders, because it wants leverage in Afghanistan – and a wedge against archrival India – once the U.S. pulls out.

Pakistan represents another miserable attempt by our State Department to buy off a corrupt thrid world government by pumping billions of tax dollars into their ungrateful pockets. I tried looking up how much the State Department sends overseas and it is a considerale sum. There are a host of other federal agencies that send alot of taxpayer money overseas that do not show up in the state departments reported budget and it is difficult to figure out what the real number of annual foriegn aid dollars really is. Military assistance from the pentagon budget is another black hole for answers regarding payments going overseas.

Who do these spenders answer to and why aren't these budgets on the table for slashing to balance the national budget. It seems the only items on the budget slashing table are medicare and social security. Only those items that directly affect the average american are negotiable per the GOP plan. Nothing ever really changes except the continued shrinkage of the middle class and the continued concentration of wealth at the top of the american food chain.

36 and more constantly growing number of pages mostly Flushing out the Hate, the anger against Billions spent on Pakistan, the Hurt feelings of Betrayal and the All – Enveloping Rage against Pakistan, much like a Love Affair gone Sour and now, you want to kill your Former Lover. Now that is all understandable and Lessons have been learnt.
Withdraw immediately all American Forces from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Japan and any other countries you have set up bases in, Cease all your Secret Wars and Save American Lives, American Money and American Integrity and Respect in the world, which is at an all time low. The USA was never appointed or anointed as the Sheriff or the Policeman of the World. See how self appointments have cost the USA dearly. With America in the Economic Doldrums and resultant problems, it is time to address the People’s Problems in the USA and leave the world to solve it’s problems.

Former lover? More like the cleaning lady, who gets paid a hefty salary, but "forgets" to clean out a major piece of trash. Your general advice is good, but the ownership class of America (the 400 people who own half the wealth) is unlikely to drop its imperial ambitions anytime soon. They don't find themselves in economic doldrums in the least and aren't interested in solving any problems faced by the hoi-polloi.

Sometimes I rail against America in regards to how we under handedly treat other countries. This is not one of those times. To Pakistan's Parliament I say this. What little legitimacy you once had just went out the window with the baby. Condemning the U.S. for taking out a really bad man who has lived on your soil for almost a decade is really petty and shows a total disregard for the men and women serving in our military who risk their lives in defense of not only our freedoms, but yours as well. It most be a total embarrassment for you to have had the worlds public enemy #1 living a stones throw from your elite officers training facility. Your efforts might be better served in reigning in your top military leadership, instead of berating the people who did what you were unwilling, or too inept to accomplish in your house. Posturing for the Taliban and Al-Quaida may prove to be your undoing. I'm not a flag waver, but in this case I will consider it.

They should show the U.S. how angry they are by refusing the billions of dollars that we send to them.

I have only one response: "yuck fou. If you hadn't been double dealing for the last eight years and protecting him we wouldn't have had to take care of business ourselves."

Burn a few American flags and get over it.

Then hand us the #2.

Then we'll let you back in the secret circle.

If Pakistan really wanted to make a statement they should have slammed the money they got from the US on the table and sent it back along with their words for every year Bin Laden was there in his "mansion".

Pull out of Afghanistan, stop funding Pakistan. They deserve each other. We seem to continue to fund corrupt regimes under the guise that they are the lesser of the two evils until of course they use all the money and military training we have provided to attack us and then they become the greater of the two evil that we need to defend ourselves against. This has happened countless and countless times and we never learn.

Except they clearly require adult supervision. Leaving Afghanistan now is like leaving the dumbest 16-year-old you could find with you car keys, many loaded weapons, a kilo of heroin and your ATM PIN.

And Pakistanis are friggin Afghanis with nukes.

My pity for India is just...boundless.
