High School Student Maria Castro Demands A More Challenging Education

Posted: Updated:

Maria Castro is concerned about her future.

A student at a failing high school, where over half of the 2,200 students are unable to pass statewide reading and math tests, Maria says she's not being intellectually stimulated.

"I was like, why isn't anybody challenging me?" she told CNN. "I would do a whole week's lesson in a class period. And I was just like, okay, this is too simple for me."

Though surrounded by low expectations, she's determined to hold herself -- and her school -- to higher standards.
