Media Matters Calls On Orbitz To Stop Advertising On Fox Over LGBT Issues

WASHINGTON -- Media Matters on Monday drafted a letter announcing a new campaign to persuade Orbitz to stop advertising on Fox News citing the conservative outlet's coverage of LGBT issues, The Huffington Post has learned.

A month after Glenn Beck announced his impending departure from his daily Fox News program amid declining advertising revenue, the progressive media watchdog group is gearing up to launch DropFox, a campaign to persuade Orbitz that Fox's representation of LGBT issues is at odds with Orbitz's own brand identity.

"Orbitz risks alienating gay and lesbian customers by giving ad dollars to Fox News, a network that blatantly promotes an anti-gay political agenda," said Ilyse Hogue, Senior Adviser at Media Matters. "Orbitz customers who value equality can and will take their business elsewhere, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Any company whose customer base values the diversity, civil rights, and journalistic standards should recognize that doing business with Fox will only cost them in the long run."

The letter being sent to Orbitz is informed by data from the StopBeck campaign showing how advertisers were successfully pressured to discontinue their ads, which ultimately led to Fox dropping Beck's program.

A breakdown of the data quantifies the impact advertiser losses had on Beck's show and how the StopBeck effort used social media to convince advertisers that associating themselves with Beck was inconsistent with their brand identity and, by extension, that dropping their ads from his show could help insulate them from public frustration with Beck.

In launching its DropFox campaign, Media Matters expects to build on the strategy used in targeting Beck.

"After losing more than 300 advertisers and seeing more than 1,000,000 viewers abandon his show the only surprise is that it took Fox News months to reach this decision," Media Matters founder David Brock said of Fox's decision to drop Beck's show. "Fox News now has to choose: Will it eliminate all violent rhetoric from the network -- not just during the 5 p.m. hour? And will the network make a commitment to end its role as a political operation masquerading as a news station?"

Now the progressive watchdog group will turn its focus to specific instances of Fox using anti-gay language and actions. It lists the following examples:

· Giving Mike Huckabee his own show despite Huckabee's history of comparing homosexuality to drug abuse, incest, pedophilia, and necrophilia. Huckabee has repeatedly used his Fox platform to campaign against gay marriage, and he has suggested that marriage equality poses a threat to stable society.

· Bill O' Reilly repeatedly using his popular prime time show to warn against the "dangers" of allowing gay people near children, to assert that same-sex marriage could lead to polygamy, nuptialswith turtles, ducks or dolphins, and to claim that implementing a hate crimes bill could protect pedophiles.

· Perpetuating the claim that repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell would impact troop readiness and morale, despite multiple reports -- including the Pentagon's -- to the contrary.

Gay rights organizations GLAAD, Courage Campaign and Equality Matters have also signed on to the letter.

The gay community has made so many strides -- so why is it now going out of its way to make enemies of those who once supported them...? They admit that Orbitz has never done anything to harm them -- yet they wish to harm Orbitz -- for marketing their product to people they don't like. That's super rainbow-y sweet!

This action was no way to win friends and influence people. What a way to make enemies out of friends! That took some superior social skills....

I'm all for voting with my wallet on important issues, but this Media Matters action is not about protesting a company for predatory and dishonest business practices. It's not about protesting a corporation for using child or slave labor. It's about the fact that Orbitz's marketing campaigns don't exclude Republicans who watch Fox News.

Maybe IF Orbitz were to suffer financially from the boycott action that has been circulating as a result of these letters Orbitz would lay off tons of employees, leaving these people to search for new jobs in the present job climate. Hmmm....

But in case you started feeling a little less warm and fuzzy about doing harm to others, here's a far more horrid thought for you to consider. Every time you fly on an American air carrier the plane is half full of Republicans who watch Fox News. You may wish to rethink your travel plans.

Seriously folks, you ought to be ashamed of yourselves for buying into this thoughtless hate-mongering.

I thought freedom of speech applied to all people. I wasn't aware certain people can try to force you to think a certain way or tell someone to take away ad dollars because some folks on the station say things that are a conflict to the other's ideas.

Should I start protesting advertisers who give to MSNBC for some of Rachel Maddow's passive-agressive anti-Christian talk rhetoric or Comedy Central for Jon Stewart's anti-conservative slant...because last I checked, America does not have a liberal majority.

it's all nonsense. If you don't like what you hear...turn to another channel.

America has become a nation of spineless whiners.

Media Matters only exists as a counter to Fox News. If it were really a media watchdog group it would also point out other problems in the media, like the nonense going on at MSNBC. Quite the contrary they are in bed with MSNBC.

So let's say this boycott were to succeed in harming Orbitz -- instead of firing up the right to support Orbitz in a massive way. But let's just say that the right doesn't get fired up and Orbitz suffers financially for the heinous act of not excluding Republicans who watch Fox from its marketing campaign. Then what...? Orbitz loses marketshare and money and has to fire tons of employees. Including gay employees. I'll bet they'll be super grateful to you for sticking it to the man!

Jack, you are walking in lockstep with the GBLT propaganda machine. HATE speech? Yeah, anytime any person or group disagrees with anything about homosexuality, same-sex attraction, gay marriage, etc., it MUST be hate, so censor the speech! First Amendment rights, ya know!
What a farce of the Left to spout "Love! Tolerance! Diversity! Inclusion! Don't stereotype!', and they do it as a rule, over and over.
Speech you disagree with, whether you represent it right or not, as you say, "will NOT be TOLERATED".
Sweet double standards, Batman!

media matters doesn't like Fox!!??? Holy gosh. Someone call Olbermann for a second opinion.

Media Matters is going to far. I don't even watch or like Fox, but this is just ridiculous. I really hope that Orbitz does not comply to these "Borg" style tactics.
08:23 PM on 05/25/2011
You spelled *TOO* incorrectly. Sorry if correcting your poor grammar is too 'Borg' style for you...
08:31 PM on 05/25/2011
Also, you are welcome to make all the misspellings and grammatical errors you like. It is your right, your freedom. And I, of course, am welcome to point out your errors so that you can stop making the same mistakes in the future. That's MY right to freedom of speech.

This time, I disagree with MediaMatters. Orbitz already supports the gay community, they don't need to be asked to give up revenue because they are "not doing enough, already." Just be happy that they continue to promote acceptance of gay lifestyles, and serve as a good business model for other companies that want to appeal to a larger audience.

How would Orbitz be giving up revenue by not advertising on Fox? MediaMatters isn't asking them not to advertise, just to be more selective about who they advertise with. I don't see how that would hurt Orbitz, can you explain how it would?

Orbiz is a huge company that has spent a lot on market research to determine which markets will have the highest yield per advertising dollar. They didn't just pick FOX randomly over, say, "lifetime" or "FX."

I choose to look at it this way. I hope Orbitz continues to take money from FOX viewers in order to grow their business. The side-effect (intentional or not) will be the growth of a company that supports equal rights. I don't blame them for not wanting to become the center of a political battle when they can do "good" in their daily business practices.

Media Matters is bringing our country back to the days of Joe McCarthy and the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, by putting pressure on advertisers to drop their support of shows that do not fall into LOCK STEP with the Nazi-like tactics of one LEFTIST pressure group. These are the same types of people who vigorously denounced the Commie and Red scare of the 1950's which led to the blacklisting of thousands of left-leaning celebrities, writers, journalists etc. And now Media Matters is doing the same thing to anyone who doesn't fall into lock-step with the Far Left.
Same thing, different era.
Nothing worse than a far left radical when it comes to free speech and the truth. They want no part of it when it goes counter to their ideology.
What's next? A ban on people like me?
Start up the gas chambers. It's coming soon for those who oppose the Left.

100% of MediaMatters jut wants to attack Fox and doesn't care about what their topic of the day to do so is. They'll make one up if they can't find one.
