Obama Tries To Fire Up Frustrated Supporters Ahead Of 2012

Barack Obama 2012

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE   05/16/11 09:58 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON -- Angling for a second term, President Barack Obama tried to fire up supporters Monday night, saying failure to get everything they want as fast as they want should motivate and not dissuade them.

Liberals and other key Obama supporters have voiced frustration with the president on a number of issues, from his compromise with Republicans on tax cuts to failure to deliver a promised overhaul of the immigration system.

Obama acknowledged the lengthy to-do list ahead, but he said his accomplishments to date show that change is possible. The message to supporters: Don't give up just yet.

"When you think back to these last two and a half years, I want you to do so not with complacency, not with full satisfaction, but I want it to motivate you," Obama told about 600 supporters at a campaign fundraiser at the Capital Hilton. "Don't let people tell you that we can't bring about change. We have already brought about change."

Obama also spoke at a dinner with about 60 high-dollar donors at the St. Regis hotel.

Recalling his election-night speech in Chicago's Grant Park in 2008, Obama said he told everyone at the time that his winning the presidency wasn't the end but the beginning. He said he wants to leave behind for future generations an America that is strong and vibrant, yet compassionate and capable of doing big things.

"We're just a quarter of the way through," Obama said, sounding almost as if he was assured of a second term. "We've got to finish our task."

Obama was introduced at the second event by Little Rock Nine member Ernie Green, one of the first black students to attend racially segregated Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., in 1957. Green enthusiastically praised Obama for his leadership on the economy, health care and foreign policy.

"I don't know any American who didn't stand a little taller on May 1 as you led us through a successful mission," Green said, referring to the U.S. military raid in Pakistan that ended with the death of Osama bin Laden.

Tuesday is the 57th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling in which the Supreme Court found that state laws that created separate schools for blacks and whites were unconstitutional.

Three years later, in 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered the Army and the Arkansas National Guard to protect Green and eight classmates as they entered Central High. Arkansas Gov. Orval Fabus had refused to comply with the Supreme Court decision.

Tickets for both campaign events ranged from $44 to the maximum legal limit of $35,800.

If Obama wants to fire up the base the first thing he needs to do is stop caving to the democrats, Wall Street, K Street and other big money interests. I would like to believe, seriously I would like to believe he has done what he has in order to get a second term where he will unleash the full power of the White House and the progressive agenda which is NOT going to be a blank check to the wealthy, the big  Read More...

Message to President Obama's advisors, both political and religious: Please tell him, "Barack, everyone already knows what an awesome campaigner and fundraiser you are. You should focus on trying to get some more of the things you promised in your last campaign done, so the people who voted for the things you promised in that campaign will vote for you again."

Liberals don't get elected president in America.

We're lucky to even have a Democrat (much less to have a non-Southern Democrat).

Feingold would be my favorite, but he'd never be elected in a million years.

As Democrats we need to get real, rally behind Obama, and do whatever we can to get him re-elected in 2012.

Obama will soon have the opportunity to appoint Liz Warren as head of new Financial Reform Agency . Will he do it, or will he prove for all time he is owned by Wall Street? This is an obvious move if he is serious about Financial Reform. Don't anybody hold your breath that he will. I hope Huffpost will do a story before the recess. Maybe we can embarrass him into doing the right thing like we did with her first appointment.

I wouldn't say you're repub, but what I've been saying all along is that your tactics of ttacking President Obama instead instead of attacking the repubs, puts you in bed with the devil himself. To call me a republican is ridiculous. I have a very large family, and a lot of friends. They are all democrat. There were a few republican along the way, but through education they have switched and are now dems. I know you think you're working on higher ground by being progressive, but the republicans are counting on your percentage to bring the democrat numbers down. They will gve you moneyto keep doing what you do. I've seen these politics before, the latest being Ralph Nader, He set the country back at a critical time when the nation was beginning to be more tolerant, and poor people were entering the middleclass at an all time fast rate. Ralph Nader put and end to the hopes and dreams of a generation African Americans and poor Americans, and the republicans grabbed hold like a pack of hyenas in heat. You can sit on the sideline and root for the "carnival barker," or you can roll up your sleeves, tighten your bootstraps and pitch in and help. The choice is really your, but the consequence will effect a lot of people. .

I guess I have to agree with him - but why should puppetry and mascot service for the elites be confined to only whites ?....

BTW .that was Professor Cornel West of Princeton not some Allen West . Your lawn jockey comment is offensive

read more of what Prof. West said

I'm hoping Russ Feingold will use his new organization Progressives United as a vehicle for himself or some other Progressive like Liz Warren or Bernie Sanders to run for President in 2012. We could always write in one of their names anyway since I think a lot of us cannot in good conscience vote for Obama ever again. It will be important that we support the few progressives who aren't bought off by Wall Street like Obama.

Obama passed most significant HCR in over 40 years.
Passed most significant FR in over 70 years.
Ledbetter law, DADT repeal, START treaty.
Proven ability to work with dems and/or repubs to get things done.
Biggest middle class tax cut in history.
Only modern president to champion the middle class over the upper class.
As promised, he wound down Iraq war and beefed up afghan war for short time.
Got bin laden.
Smart enough to conduct a "war" (Libya) with ZERO American casualties.
America is respected and admired again by the rest of the world.

Meanwhile, republicans and tea partiers fight among themselves to see who can be more out of touch with the average American worker.

Democrats, independents, and disenfranchised moderate republicans will vote for Obama AGAIN in 2012.

Lets see as far as the HCR is concerned over 90% of the Americans dont want it, and over 30 states want to repeal it. As for taxes, he took full advantage of the tax breaks for the wealthy, and even though he made contributions with that extra money he wrote it off in his taxes. The Iraq war is far from winding down, and USA has gotten in deeper in Afghanistan during his term off office. He didnt get Bin Laden, the CIA and the special ops of the navy seals got him. As for the Libyan war we have a carrier fleet task force off the coast of Libya in their territorial waters. And we have war planes from our carriers in their air space enforcing a no fly zone. And so war two US military aircraft ahve been shot down where we had to send the marines in to get them. And sorry to say the world all think the USA is a joke.

Obama is going to lose for the following reasons:
1. The yearly deficit is $1.5t and he will have added $6t to our National Debt in 4 years.
2. He has no idea how to create private sector jobs, just government jobs.
3. States will layoff 1-2m government workers in the next 18 months to balance their budgets.
4. Obama lost the independent voters in 2010 and nothing he says will bring them back.
5. He made a fool of himself with his foreign policy mistakes in the Arab world and Europe.
6. He makes good speeches with a script, but his actions demonstrate he doesn't believe what he says.
7. Republicans have the majority of State Governors and that will be very hard to run against.
8. Obama is running scared. He plans to raise $500m this year and another $500m next year. If his record supported him, he would not need that money as a sitting president to change Americas opinion of him.
9. The next 18 months will be ugly for him with weak GDP growth, housing set to lose another 20% in value, high inflation for things everyone buys, weak job growth, and a Congress that must do something material about the deficit and jobs to be re-elected in 2012.

There is a lot more reasons, but limited space.

Since Obama took office 14,000,000 people have had to go on food stamps. Do you think he got their vote?

Lets be clear . Obama is going to win reelection unless the Republicans steal some states by means of MASSIVE FRAUD. But , Obama is going to be challenged in the primaries by Dennis Kucinich . Now, Obama's problem is that he thinks we have a deficit problem because he actually believes his corporate benefactors. The same people who fund the Republicans. Philosophically speaking, Obama is just as corporate as his fellow Democrats in the Senate who have all been bought and paid for. Except Bernie Sanders. The House has the Progressive caucus , but they make up only about half the Democrats in the House even though the policies they support would be approved by the American people in a landslide if they had a chance to vote on it . So , the problem this country has is that it is on the wrong course eonomically and the American people are not represented in either body of Congress or the White House. Only a revolution can actually get us out of this situation. Thomas Jefferson and the founding fathers would all be advocating for one to happen because they knew from studying history that this situation would eventually occur. Jefferson , himself, said the banks would eventually destroy our Democracy. Obama and the Democrats know all about this, but none of them have the courage to act to save this nation and that is the saddest thing of all.

Kucinich would be a much better President than Obama, but his opponents, including Obama, would beat him to death with his nerdy appearance, the UFO in Shirley Maclaine's back yard, and that cafeteria incident. He wouldn't stand a chance.

Oh I know that. But when you vote for someone like Kucinich, as I certainly would, you always feel good about your vote knowing that you are voting for someone who has not been bought and paid for by someone else. It is a great feeling ! And one that comes very rarely .

Maybe it is because we voted for a change from Bush's policies, including an end to pointless and wasteful military aggression and the virtual handover of government to Wall St.
If anything both have accelerated under Obama

2008 was my first time voting, even though I was in my late 30s. I only hope that, given the alternative, other first-time votes (or even "disaffected" voters in general) don't just sit out the 2012 election. Those who do, because they are irritated that President Obama hasn't accomplished this one thing, or that one thing, and who ignore all he HAS accomplished, have only themselves to blame if we start off 2013 by swearing in President Pawlenty, Gingrich, Bachman, etc.

Obama doesn't motivate, he just fires people up. Why does he still have to SELL his 'goodness' to us? If people liked his policies he would have no problem being re-elected. All the bs is just going to bite back hard. real hard.
09:25 PM on 05/17/2011
Doesn't matter how a president has done, they still have to SELL themselves, because if they don't the opposition will certainly do their best to tear you down...and even when what they say isn't true, it often works.
