Rahm Emanuel Inauguration: Chicago's New Mayor Sworn In (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 05/16/11 04:02 PM ET   Updated: 07/16/11 06:12 AM ET

After a long and dramatic journey, Chicago's new Mayor Rahm Emanuel was sworn in Monday. Chicago residents gathered in Millennium Park on an unseasonably cool morning to welcome their first new mayor in 22 years.

Elected officials from across Illinois (and the country) gathered to watch Emanuel take the oath of office and make his inaugural address. (Full inauguration coverage here.) Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden joined Emanuel and outgoing Mayor Richard M. Daley on stage. Also present was U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner and White House Chief of Staff William M. Daley, whose father and brother governed Chicago longer than any other mayors in the city's history.

U.S. Senators from Illinois Mark Kirk and Dick Durbin also attended the ceremony, along with U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock; Rep. Jerry Costello; Rep. Jan Schakowsky; Rep. Danny Davis; Rep. Michael Quigley; Rep. Luis Gutierrez; Rep. Daniel Lipinski; Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. and Rep. Bobby Rush.

Check out some photos from Monday's event here:

When are the people of Chicago going to get it, like the rest of the state. You go from bad to worst. This is and will always be a puppet of obama.

I'm no fan of Emanuel, but he isn't Daley, and that is a start.

Congrats Rahm! Besides removing the old mayor's name from signs around town, what else are your priorities?

As a Chicagoan, I will miss Mayor Daley. He is Chicago.

Mr. Emanuel, do this city right. I have seen it when it is bad --Mayor Byrne and Washington days...ugh....and a good mayor can keep this city world class.

Good luck.

Good luck to Rahm.

I hope he turns out to be a better mayor than he was a chief of staff.
