'Up All Night' Video Previews: Will Arnett, Christina Applegate In New NBC Comedy (VIDEOS)

Arnett Applegate

First Posted: 05/16/11 03:12 PM ET Updated: 07/16/11 06:12 AM ET

Of the many injustices that Lord Nielsen has bestowed upon comedy nerds and college kids, so often punished for their rejection of broad humor for more articulate and nuanced laughs, the harsh treatment of Will Arnett may rank amongst the most painful and protested.

One of the stars of the beloved "Arrested Development," cancelled after a truncated third season by Fox after a long series of near-executions, Arnett's admittedly less renowned second series, "Running Wilde," got the axe by the same network before it could even reach the middle of its first season.

To keep fans satiated and his career firing, Arnett has popped up in recurring roles in IFC's "The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret," and NBC's "30 Rock," and now, the Canadian star will get another shot at a network TV series: his pilot with Christina Applegate, "Up All Night," was picked up for next season by NBC and placed in a Wednesday night comedy block.

Arnett and Applegate play new parents looking to balance work, life and the shock of their unexpected new bundle of joy; in a twist, Arnett plays the more down-to-earth character, the stay at home dad who tries to reign in his spiraling wife. The humor, of course, comes when that doesn't happen.

The network has released a long trailer to preview the show; check it out below.

It's network TV. So I don't expect it to be funny at all.

Sorry, but Will has never had any chemistry with any of the women he's been with on these shows, and that was no different here. My suggestion - get rid of him and make Christina and Maya the mothers of the baby. Much more interesting, and it would give Maya more screen time, which is always a good thing. Sorry Will fans.

Great! Another show about a mangina who stays at home like a 18th century housewife, feminism and equality is great and all but that does not mean you have to make a man a woman. what an embrassment.
01:15 PM on 05/17/2011
Wait ... how, exactly, is the male character being made into a woman? Is it the fact that he was pushing a -- dare I say it? -- shopping cart?

Is it that his wife is -- gasp! -- the breadwinner?

Yes, you are right. There is an embarrassment here, but it is not the show.

I'd like to see it. Too bad there's no such thing as 'network television' anymore.

I like C-Apple and I think she's talented.

But when are people going to get that Will Arnett cannot be the leading man on a sitcom. I am sorry but he's not THAT funny and outside of his humor there's no charisma there to keep anyone interested.

Arrested Dev. had a funny cast...he wasn't the lead.
His snippets on 30 Rock are funny, but he's not a regular cast member and it's his interaction with A. Baldwin that makes it comical.

They gave him that show with chick from Felicity....Keri Russell. It was not funny at all and rightly so...cancelled.

Isn't it time to face facts about Will Arnett? Sorry, Amy Poehler (you're mad funnier than your husband).

It's infuriating. I LOVE Christina, she's so talented and they have just doomed her again by pairing her with Will. Wasn't how fast "Running Wilde" was canceled a clue, NBC? It must have been a clause written into Amy Poehler's contract to add him on. Amy's no Christina either.

I totally agree. he's just not leading man material as far as I am concerned. He seems to play the same man/child character in everything he does.

Yes. He does it really really well, no question. But they need to get him a role as the neighbor or the brother or co-worker. Consistent screen time, yes. Lead, no.

ugh.. this guy gets the nine lifes award for comedy/entertainment -- didn't he just do a push for a fox sit-com? It was called Running Wilde - I think? 30 rock, P & recs, Arrested Development, and others.. he seems to always be playing the same character, there is the whole new-ish generation of entertainment people who are actors first and do comedy because it's the only thing they can get work for or it's a way to break in? He kind of reminds me of one of these people - you know how many of these "jokes" does he write and how much of his "who's line is it anyway" training is he relying on?

Was he on Parks and Rec? I know he's married to Amy Pohler, but I don't recall ever seeing him on the show. He certainly does seem to play the same man/child character in eveything.

Am I the only one in the world who doesn't think Will Arnett is funny? (Despite the brilliantly funny woman he's married to.) I do think Christina has comedic chops, and I'd love to see her have a hit, but I saw the trailer for this one on the NY Magazine site and it gets a big thumbs down from me. Didn't feel any chemistry between the two, and I'm betting it's destined for an early hiatus.

I agree on some level, but I re-frame from getting into pointless conversations about what people believe is funny - it's to hard to quantify.

I think this could work. Both Will and Christina are very funny and I think can work well together. I've seen a couple of shows Will's been in and besides just being bad writing, he's very funny and his counterpart just couldn't keep up with that and have that same comedic chemistry.
This could work.

Bummer -- sounds like this rules out any chance of Arnett as the new Scranton Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin.

And I love the fact that she started out as teen sex kitten - survived breast cancer publicly - and still has a career!

I'll give it a try. He was too over-the-top in Running Wilde, seeing him toned down will be a nice change of pace.
