Bashar Assad Sanctions Announced By U.S.

Bashar Assad Sanctions Syria

MATTHEW LEE and MARTIN CRUTSINGER   05/18/11 03:09 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — The United States slapped sanctions on Syrian President Bashar Assad and six senior Syrian officials for human rights abuses over their brutal crackdown on anti-government protests, for the first time personally penalizing the Syrian leader for actions of his security forces.

The White House announced the sanctions Wednesday, a day before President Barack Obama delivers a major speech on the uprisings throughout the Arab world. The speech is expected to include prominent mentions of Syria.

The Obama administration had pinned hopes on Assad, seen until recent months as a pragmatist and potential reformer who could buck Iranian influence and help broker an eventual Arab peace deal with Israel.

But U.S. officials said Assad's increasingly brutal crackdown left them little choice but to abandon the effort to woo Assad, and to stop exempting him from the same sort of sanctions already applied to Libya's Moammar Gadhafi.

In a letter to congressional leaders, Obama said he issued the new sanctions order as a response to the Syrian government's "continuous escalation of violence against the people of Syria."

Obama cited "attacks on protesters, arrests and harassment of protesters and political activists, and repression of

democratic change, overseen and executed by numerous elements of the Syrian government."

The sanctions will freeze any assets Assad and the six Syrian government officials have in U.S. jurisdiction and make it illegal for Americans to do business with them. The U.S. had imposed similar sanctions on two of Assad's relatives and another top Syrian official last month but had thus far refrained from going after Assad himself.

"The actions the administration has taken today send an unequivocal message to President Assad, the Syrian leadership and regime insiders that they will be held accountable for the ongoing violence and repression in Syria," said David S. Cohen, Treasury's acting under secretary for terrorism, said in a statement.

"President al-Assad and his regime must immediately end the use of violence, answer the calls of the Syrian people for a more representative government and embark upon the path of meaningful democratic reform," Cohen said.

Treasury officials could give no estimate on how much in Assad's assets were located in the United States that would be frozen by the new sanctions order.

The U.S. move came as Assad said earlier Wednesday that his security forces had made mistakes during the two-month uprising and blamed poorly trained police at least in part for the crackdown that has killed more than 850 people.

On Tuesday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she was increasingly alarmed by developments in Syria and called out Assad and his allies for failing to follow through on earlier pledges of reform.

"They have embraced the worst tactics of their Iranian ally, and they have refused to honor the legitimate aspirations of their own people in Syria," Clinton told reporters. "President Assad talks about reform, but his heavy-handed, brutal crackdown shows his true intentions."

Clinton's pointed accusation about Assad bearing personal responsibility for the repression came as the White House ramped up its criticism of his rule.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said democratic change had to come to Syria.

"The recent events in Syria we believe prove that the country cannot go back to the status quo ante," he said. "Syria's future will only be secured by a government that reflects the popular will of its people."

"Stop, stop, stop doing those bad things. There that'll do it." said Barack Obama. Talk about a slap on the wrist from Gilligan in the White House.

Exactly what do you want them to do? Go to war? Somehow, I don't think that is a good idea. Public condemnation, freezing their assets, making it illegal to do business with him, which includes selling weapons, that's about all the President can legally do. Unless you want to drop bombs on his head. We cannot protect everyone in the world, people who want freedom and democracy have to fight and die for it themselves. Remember?

The Bible says in Isaiah 17:1 "The burden of Damascus, Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and IT SHALL be a RUINOUS HEAP". Damascus, in Syria, is one of the oldest cities and has never been a "Ruinous Heap", yet the Bible predicts that it is going to happen. In Ezekiel 29:11, the Bible says, concerning Egypt "No foot of man shall pass through it, nor foot of beast shall pass through it, neither shall it be inhabited FORTY YEARS". Right after the II World War, America set off an atomic bomb on the island of Bikini. Forty years later, it was then declared safe to walk on because of radioactivity. In Ezekiel 30:4 it says "And the sword shall come upon Egypt". and it says twice "I will set a fire in Egypt" in verses 8 & 16, in the "Day of the Lord". In Ezekiel 38 @ 39 It speaks of Gog of Maygog (Russia?) with Persia (Iran?) with Ethiopia, Lybia, Togarmah (Turkey?) and other countries coming upon the "Mountains of Israel", "to take a spOIL". And God will destroy 83% of that army. Could it be that Israel is going to discover a large deposit of oil, for those nations to come against the land of Israel? Doesn't this sound spookey and far out? What is the peace plan of Israel that is called the Samson Plan? Comments please. Thanks, Anson

The Bible also says in Leviticus 19:10 "And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you." Last week I was at Red Lobster (however not partaking in the heathen practice of consuming some seductively buttery shellfish) and the waitress told my compatriots and I that we had arrived at a time of year known as 'Lobster Fest.' I couldn't help but think to the Revelations 13:37 (King Spoon Vers.) which says "Alas, when the infidel ritualizes the consumption of that which is red and pinchy, accompanied by toasty biscuits of, run hither, for the LORD has given this unto you as a sign of the rapture." Could it be that this festival of decent lobster at a reasonable price is a sign of the end times?

Isaiah was a prophet. Leviticus was the "food" book in the Bible. I always considered more of a guide to ancient Jewish history, though I believe that some customs are still part of the Jewish faith. Taking anything out of context from most any book leads to misunderstanding, taking anything out of Leviticus is waste of time, IMO. Most women don't head for a shed one week every month! It takes a Bible scholar to make much sense of the Old Testament, that's why I stick to the teachings of Jesus. Very precise, very easy to understand. Tolerance and love.

So why no 'arrest warrant' from the vaunted UN?

Interesting that Saint Hillary of A'Clinton is calling him out. She personally gave him cover a few months ago by labeling him a (ahem) 'reformer'.  She said it was 'different' that he was using his military against the civilians in Syria from what Gaddafi is doing.

Oh how scary is that. Ask iran and north korea, they have certainly changed their actions since sanctions, not. Like a paper tiger, how silly we are when dealing with terrorists. Why.

True that. How many times have 'sanctions' been imposed on Syria over the years, regardless of who is in the WH? Yet the same despots continue to occupy Damascus.

So, those of you posting in the same ilk, do you want to go to war with Iran and Syria and North Korea? It would solve the unemployment problem. Every able bodied person would be in uniform and handed a gun. We might even have to mobilize the boy scouts. What is your plan? It is easy to say what won't work, what will work? If you say "nuke" them, I think that would kill even more civilians that these despots are able to do. If we go to war with N Korea, I hope China is very fond of us. We could not defeat China. Against a government that would just shrug if they lost 5 million soldiers, and be glad of help for their overpopulation, we would not do so well. And they have more and probably better nukes than we do. You know a Republican candidate that has the answers, and can stop the horrors all over the world? Who is he and what is his plan? Or her plan, sorry.

The US is doing... something. But one has to wonder what the Arab League makes of Assad's regime killing protesters in large numbers.

The CIA station is located inside the US embassy right there in the capital. Their communications station is also there. My guess, if we piss them off too much they will end diplomatic relations with us, thus closing down our embassy and the station. Human intelligence there would be severely damaged.

It's getting to the point where we just need to withdraw from the Middle East, it's a wasteland. Let them figure their own way out of their millenia-long wars and quibbling. We have our own problems, we shouldn't be throwing any more money or lives their way. Enough is enough. We need to focus on the problem we have with stupid Mexico and the drug cartels at our southern border, as well as along our northern border, since Canada is so conciliatory towards thugs from other countries.

That's why Bush attacked Iraq, it was the only country he knew we could easily and quickly defeat. Unfortunately, he didn't look at a map. Uh, Bush, it is in the middle of a much of Muslim countries who won't like us there! It will be easy for those countries to arouse hatred after such an invasion, and easy for the bad guys to surround us. And like in Viet Nam, how do our soldiers tell the difference between the good Iraquis who are our friends, and the enemy?

I'm confused. In that other article it said that the Muslim world didn't like us because we were propping up these dictators and helping them keep their people down. This is so confusing...

We shouldn't be giving aid to any of these middle east countries. Slapping sanctions on them tells me that we have been giving them something and are now taking it away. We need to stop helping and giving aid to countries and rouge governments that, given the chance, would turn on us like a rabid dog in a heart beat. We need to get completely out of the middle east and start taking care of our own business here at home.

Sanctions are different then cutting off aid. We have not given aid to Syria for 20 years or so barely had diplomatic relations with the assads in syria. To suggest we ignore the middle east and take care of our own business is silly. Any war or instability in the region could potentially effect the supply and price of oil world wide which could easily lead to a deppression that would make the thrities look like a picnic.
09:04 AM on 05/19/2011
We don't need their oil. We have plenty of it right here in the northern hemisphere. If there wasn't any oil in the middle east, they would pretty much be worthless. What else do they have to offer the world? All I can see is death and destruction.
