TUNIS/TRIPOLI, May 19 (Reuters) - The wife and daughter of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi crossed the border into Tunisia, a Tunisian security source said, but it was unclear whether they were on a diplomatic mission or seeking safe haven.

Arabic television stations quoted Tunisian officials as denying that the family members were in the country, saying that Safia Gaddafi and her daughter Aisha were on a U.N. sanctions list and would therefore not be allowed in.

However, the security source said the two women came to Tunisia with a Libyan delegation on May 14 and have been staying on the southern island of Djerba near the Libyan border.

It did not appear that they were travelling with Shokri Ghanem, Libya's top oil official, who is believed to have also crossed into Tunisia several days ago and defected.

Government officials in Tripoli were not immediately available for comment.

The Tunisian Interior Ministry denied that any members of the Gaddafi family were in the country in remarks to Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya TV.

Al Jazeera quoted a ministry spokesman as saying Tunisia would arrest any members of the Gaddafi family should they enter the country under a U.N.-imposed travel ban.

A Libyan opposition source said the women were in Djerba to accompany Aisha's husband, who he said had been injured in the Libyan conflict, and was seeking treatment in Tunisia.

A commentator on a daily political talkshow on state-run Libyan TV dismissed reports Gaddafi and members of his family had left Libya as "rumours" and "psychological war" spread by rebels and the West.

"Those people (Gaddafi and his children) live among other people and if any of those rumours were true it would be possible to find this out," the commentator said.

Italian officials have speculated that Gaddafi, who has been in power for four decades, was wounded during a NATO air strike in the capital last month which killed his youngest son and three of his grandchildren.

Libyan television has shown footage of the leader since the bombardment and aired an audio message in which he taunted NATO forces, saying he was in a place where their artillery could not reach him.

Since the revolt began in February against Gaddafi's rule, Aisha Gaddafi has made several public appearances backing her father, and attacking the rebels and Western powers trying to overthrow him.

A month ago she appeared at her father's Bab al-Aziziyah compound in Tripoli and addressed cheering crowds of supporters in an event broadcast live on Libyan state television.

"Talk about Gaddafi stepping down is an insult to all Libyans because Gaddafi is not in Libya, but in the hearts of all Libyans," she said.

On Tuesday, Libyan rebels and a Tunisian security source said the head of Libya's National Oil Corporation, Shokri Ghanem, had defected and fled to Tunisia. If confirmed, the defection would undermine Gaddafi's efforts to cling to power.

Ghanem would be the most senior Libyan official to defect since former foreign minister Moussa Koussa switched sides in Britain earlier this year after passing through Tunisia. Folks ... do a little bit of research about the Italian occupation and colonization of "Libya." There really is no country called "Libya", since it was created, like much of Africa, by European powers. There were actually three portions of what is now Libya that were "united" by the Italians prior to WW II, and after the war, a phony king ruled for a short period of time until the "good colonel" Gaddafi took over. The reason there is no national unity during the present revolution is because the Libyan people have no president for statehood. When the shooting ends, there may well be two or maybe three portions of what is now Libya ending up as independent countries, not unlike the breakup of the former Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and in a greater context, the Soviet Union.

So based on your logic, there is no country called the United States of America. It was formed, like much of the Americas, by European powers and later on by freedom-seeking visionaries. There were actually 13 colonies of what is now the U.S.A. that were "united" by a rag-tag group of slave owners/freedom lovers, and after the war, they put a guy named Washington who had wood-teeth mind you and allegedly could never tell a lie for a short period of time until some other guy named "Adams" took over via something called "ehlecshuns".

See how that works? Why don't you read a credible book instead of coming up with nonsense like "good" colonel?

There was nothing "phony" about the king. The representatives of Tripolitania, Cyrenaica, and Fezzan chose him by their free will to be our monarch. We had our first and only constitution under his rule; something that Gaddafi annulled since his coup in 1969, leaving Libya with the dubious distinction as probably the only country in the modern world without a constitution.
When the shooting ends, there will be one Libya with Tripoli as its capital. In all the turmoil of the past months, no one, not even the ones on Gaddafi's side have mentioned anything about the partition of our nation. We will be just fine, thank you

Your first paragraph is a bit baffling, since George Washington's wooden teeth have nothing to do with American history unless you are an dental anthropologist.

That being said, there Libya was an Italian colony from 1911 (when it conquered Tripolitania and Cyrenaica from the Ottoman Empire) until 1943, and it only became an independent country in 1951 after the Axis powers were defeated by the Allies during WW II and the British and French relinquished their power over Tripolitania, Cyrenaica, and Fezzan. King Idris led the country of Libya, which as you mentioned was composed of the three before mentioned regions, until he was deposed by Gaddafi and other military officers in 1969. No argument there.

Gaddafi ruled Libya as an eccentric, brutal, and absolute dictator until 2011, which brings us to the current situation. I'm not convinced that Libya will remain united, given the recent tendency of former colonial regions throughout the world to seek their own autonomous regions or become independent countries when given the opportunity to do so (as was the case with the former Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and obviously the Soviet Union). I sincerely hope that a united Libya emerges from today's chaos, but it is conceivable that several states may emerge in the event of a military and political stalemate.

This whole Gaddafi saga is like a big joke. I cant see why this has dragged out so long. And there seems to be no end in site. The Obama administration and the so called NATO, is dragging their feet.
Sometime we need to shoot first and ask question later.
Gaddafi and his son should be in one of two place by now: jail or prison ,instead of being in Tunisia eating cavier and drinking fine wine. It is just too bad that so many more innocent Libyains will have to die.
Bin Laden is loney wherever he is.Gaddafi need to join him soon.
I cant wait for this to end.
But what are we going to do about Syria? I wish I could help.

While NATO forces are attacking Gaddafi's Compound, NATO/USA forces should locate where the Locerbie Bomber is supposedly dying of a terminal Illness & lob a couple three cruise missles in his direction & hasten the dying process a bit for him! I was just thinking!!

I am not going to speak for the other Arabs and Muslims, because anyone with an iota of brain matter realizes that we are so different from one another it is ridiculous to jumble us together as one entity.
However, I can tell you as a Libyan, as someone who just came back from there, that the view of America in Free Libya is completely different than what you may believe Middle Easterners think of the U.S.
As an American citizen, you cannot believe the amount of pride I was feeling walking the streets of Benghazi and watching men, women, and children holding the Stars and Stripes hand to hand with the Libyan Tricolor. I saw old women sewing it in their own homes, giving it to their children so they can go to Courthouse Square and display it for the whole world to see. The amount of goodwill and genuine affection is truly amazing. I met U.S. journalists who said this is the first time they see the flag held in such respect and esteem in this part of the world. No burning, no trampling on, and no effigies of the president anywhere. You know why? Because unlike Iraq, this is a grassroots popular movement for freedom, and the U.S. has chosen in its respect to be on the right side of history.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to change the narrative, and do it the right way.

This is your comment to an article on the subject of whether Gaddafi's wife and daughter have slipped out of Libya and into Tunisia?  I am sure you voted against Obama and could not wait to find something you could call a disaster.

Read the history about the country called Libya, and then make your value judgements. Until then, hold off on your partisan statements about Obama.

Unbelievable! It was Bush who made nice with Gaddafi. If the Gaddafi family has any American to run to for cover, it is not our current President.

MLK would be proud of you for playing the race card, was there something wrong with Sanford and Son or Amos and Andy, I rather thought they were great entertainers in their time. They would also be proud of you for being racist. If you could respond by calling me a CRACKER you could finish your rant. I was told many times (I am caucasian) by my mentor a black skinned reverend racism would be a 2 sided game long after we were gone. He has passed now (one of the great men in my life) and the card is still being played.
