We call it libraries here.

I'm not sure what you call it from your neck of the woods.

They're great. DVDs, cds, books, magazines...all free.

Wow. Another chain about to disappear. Soon we will be forced to go to those places...what did we call them? Oh yes, local bookstores. Anyone seen one lately?
BTW Waterstones have quite a presence in the US via stores at airports.

Unfortunately in many English cities there are no alternatives to the chains, so if W.H.Smiths goes (and it´s more a glorified newsagents than a chain of bookshops) that will leave Tesco´s and other supermarkets as the only non-net place to buy a book.

I get books for free from my local libraries. My taxes support these age old establishments so I'd much rather borrow books then BUY them.
