Carlsberg Copenhagen: Brewery Wants Women To Drink Its New Beer

First Posted: 05/20/11 01:53 PM ET Updated: 07/19/11 06:12 AM ET

In a clear departure from the status quo of dude-centric beer marketing commercials, Carlsberg's campaign for its new beer, Copenhagen, is hoping to invite more women (at least 25% of the market) to the beer drinking arena.

In a new commercial, Copenhagen (the beer, not the city) is billed as "so insisting that natural beauty needs no make-up, so tastefully stating that blonde is the new black....so not the usual suspect, so not like any other beer." The design for this "refreshingly different" beer's packaging is sleek and minimal, also a departure from most other beers. "Copenhagen is intended for modern women and men, who appreciate a refreshing taste delivered in a stylish design," Carlsberg claims.

Carlsberg is banking on a taste for less aggressive beers. Kirsten Ægidius the VP Marketing explains, "Many young people aren’t keen on the bitter aftertaste of beer...we have created a highly drinkable beer with a balanced taste – a real alternative to white wine and champagne."

The beer will be available in Denmark this year and in the rest of Europe and parts of Asia in 2012.

Watch the beer porn-esque commercial below.

No self-respecting beer lover would drink anything that lacking in color. Now pass me a Guiness.

So, calling it a girly beer would not be an insult.

My wife would hit me over the head with her empty stout bottle if I tried to offer her one these pretend barbie beers.

I happen to love the bitter taste of IPA's and pale ale's. I wasn't born with those bitter-buds, but I've grown to like them over the year. If women are targeted as if they'll never learn to enjoy more robust beers, then they never will, and breweries will lose out on learning more about an eager audience. Stunts like these take your existing female customer base and dwindle it down even further.

Every time they market a beer geared to a specific group, it's always awful! I'm a woman and I love a really dark, strong ale and not some wimpy "girl" beer. I guess I lived in Europe too long but I just can't get used to those pale beers that don't even resemble what beer is supposed to taste like.

By naming it after snuff? A guy once accidentally spit into my beer can, thinking it was his chew spit can. Sadly, I now know what Copenhagen Beer really takes like.

Beer contains more yeast than a vaginal infection. Why would I want to drink it? Beer is not appetizing for women.

are you serious? first of all, if you talk like that, i can deduce that you are not appetizing to men... secondly, speak for yourself, i know plenty of women who like beer.

Most mass-market beer is filtered to remove the yeast, and most wineries do the same thing. As you might recall from science class, wine is also the product of yeast fermentation. I, however, appreciate the earthy flavor of an unfiltered beer.

They should just spike a bottle of club soda with a shot of vodka and call their ad men.

They could just make it out of grapes and call it wine. My wife likes wine.

So you're targeting people who don't like the taste of beer and want less beer taste. That's not sophisticated so much as the Arbor Mist school of thinking.

Life is too short to drink light beer!

And here I am trying to RAISE the specific gravity of beer, not lower it. :)
