WASHINGTON/TRIPOLI, May 20 (Reuters) - Muammar Gaddafi will inevitably leave power, U.S. President Barack Obama said, as NATO intensified its weeks-long bombing of government targets and said on Friday it had sunk eight Libyan warships.

Obama was speaking in an address on the Middle East where a series of uprisings this year governments in Tunisia and Egypt, and inspired a three-month-old revolt in Libya that aims to overthrow Gaddafi.

"Time is working against Gaddafi. He does not have control over his country. The opposition has organised a legitimate and credible Interim Council," Obama said in Washington on Thursday.

"When Gaddafi inevitably leaves or is forced from power, decades of provocation will come to an end and the transition to a democratic Libya can proceed," he said, defending his decision to take military action against the Libyan leader's government.

His comments echoed NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen who said military and political pressure were weakening Gaddafi and would eventually topple him.

The Libyan leader remained defiant.

"Obama is still delusional," Libyan government spokesman Mussa Ibrahim said. "He believes the lies that his own government and media spread around the world ... It's not Obama who decides whether Muammar Gaddafi leaves Libya or not. It's the Libyan people."

Acting under a U.N. mandate, NATO allies including France, Britain and the United States are conducting air strikes that aim to stop Gaddafi using military force against civilians.

NATO aircraft sank the eight warships in overnight attacks on the ports of Tripoli, Al Khums and Sirte, the alliance said in a statement.

"Given the escalating use of naval assets, NATO had no choice but to take decisive action to protect the civilian population of Libya and NATO forces at sea," said Rear-Admiral Russell Harding, deputy commander of NATO's Libyan mission.

Libyan officials took journalists to Tripoli port where a small ship spewed smoke and flames, and cast doubt on whether boats targeted by NATO had been involved in fighting.

Mohammad Ahmad Rashed, general manager of Tripoli's port, said six boats had been hit by missiles.

The boats, five belonging to the coastguard and a larger naval vessel, had been undergoing maintenance since before the start of the fighting, he told reporters, adding that the port was still functional and capable of handling commercial traffic.

NATO bombs struck Tripoli, Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte and Zlitan east of the capital, state TV said late on Thursday.

Rebels control eastern Libya and pockets in the west but the conflict has reached a stalemate as rebel attempts to advance on Gaddafi's stronghold of Tripoli have stalled.

Western governments, under pressure from sceptical voters, are counting on Gaddafi's administration to collapse.

"We have significantly degraded Gaddafi's war machine. And now we see results, the opposition has gained ground," Rasmussen told a news conference in the Slovak capital, Bratislava.

"I am confident that a combination of strong military pressure and increased political pressure and support for the opposition will eventually lead to the collapse of the regime."

LIBYA TV SHOWS GADDAFI

Libyan state TV showed footage of Gaddafi meeting a Libyan politician in Tripoli. Government spokesman Ibrahim said the politician had been in a delegation that met Russian officials in Moscow this week to explore possibilities for a ceasefire.

The footage zoomed in on a TV screen in the room that showed Thursday's date displayed in the corner. Gaddafi wore a brown robe with a hat and sunglasses.

Gaddafi was last seen on May 11 when state TV showed him meeting tribal leaders in Tripoli. NATO bombed his compound the next day, and a day later TV broadcast an audio clip in which he taunted NATO and said the alliance could not kill him.

The last few days have seen a flurry of diplomatic activity focusing on a possible ceasefire deal.

But Western powers are likely to stress their determination to keep the pressure on Gaddafi when heads of state from the Group of Eight industrialised nations meet on May 27-28.

In an attempt to raise pressure on Tripoli, the European Union is considering tightening sanctions by blacklisting some Libyan ports to prevent exports of oil and imports of fuel, a Western diplomatic source told Reuters. He should leave power immediately, and save his country. He has done so much harm to nation, first by cracking down and inviting NATO to get involved.Forty two years is enough, time to go.

Who is giving mandate Obama to comments who will leave or who will stay.....He is killing Libyan citizens and destroying all what Gaddafi and his people built in last 40 years, together with NATO alliance and all of it in name of 'protection of civilians"...what a irony and hypocrisy...less then 10% of citizens are against Gaddafi and it is ok now to other 90% suffering from well known "peace makers and care makers" such NATO alliance. Shame on you The President of America.....

Less than 10%,what an idiot.I recall seeing huge crowds in Benghazi back in Feb dancing and celebrating, that is the second biggest city in Libya. How come many cities, including Tripoli protested? If Gaddafi has so much support, how come he cracked down very hard, and still has laid seige on Tripoli with his security forces?I thought he is so loved and admired?
When the uprising began, why did Gaddafi's son(who is equally as sick of a man as his weirdo father)say that his father would fight to the very end?If these rebels are a minority, why did Saif al Islam say they would fight to the last bullet?I thought this family is well loved?
I use facts to back up my points, unlike you.Now you coward should reply to me and answer these questions.I'm waiting.

First of all thank you for nice word you are using as "an idiot". Did you seen huge crowds in Bengazi in live as you were present there or on TV watching and accounting them....How many towns protested...I am under meaning that people are protesting but not towns....any how protesters with tanks, heavy machine guns etc. are still protesters for you - great. What is happening now in Benghazi.....who is now protesting....get some true information....Best regards from "an idiot"

Well Libya is far more complex pack than any other regimes in the Muslim nations. Even Gaddafi has no parllel to Ahmadinejad. Both are though fanatics but Gaddafi is an overall single man show unlike in Iran. I shall be surprised if he quits easily. He will break but will not bend, is a type having known him over the years. His whole family is solidly behind him. He can not be brushed aside easily since he is sustaining for last many months. He must have a good backing both at home as well as outside. I am sure, he does have a good backing. Otherwise He would have broken long ago.

Let us see. God bless

The fact that he has hung on so far means nothing, you should not think he is powerful and well supported. He wants power at all costs,if he were very well admired,he would never have cracked down on the protesters like that, setting off a war and forcing people to become fighters. It shows he is not well supported and he knows it.His son said in Feb that his dad would fight to the last bullet. Now that does not show Gaddafi is well supported,it shows he knows he is hated by most Libyans, and he wants power at all costs.I just wish he is killed and this nonsense is over with.He forfeited the right to live long time ago.

Say what you like about Qaddafi, but his people have universal access to health care and education including women. He runs a balanced budget, in fact, he ran a surplus, which we have now stolen.

Qaddafi built schools, hospitals, water and sanitation projects all across Libya, what has the US or NATO done for the Libyans?

Come to think of it, what has "Democracy" done for us lately?

But apparently most Libyans don't want him,and Libya never really advanced like the oil states did, despite its resources.Gaddafi did not do anything for his country, most Libyans say his best decade was the 70's.After that his rule became pretty bad.He was very popular in the 70's,no longer.

That was great when the Lybian spokesman called Obama delusional
Looks like Obama made a home run this week...he's delusional about Israel too.

And the Left tell us Obama is on TOP of his game regarding his foreign policy ........
Well, if he's on top of his game........HELP

Problem is most of his supporters do not read newspapers, watch the crummy national news, use the internet. They see this guy on local channels and wait for there checks, in public housing.

I am in enemy territory all the time...since I teach Homeless Adults how to read and do their numbers. These are people who voted for Obama, are in their 30s + and can't read.
These are Americans that can't count more than 3 numbers at a time..and can't read !!
That's Obama's base. Amazing............how can an American at 30+ not know how to read....
I don't show my feeling about that because I am there to help but it amazes me !!

That's what the Muslim Brotherhood is waiting for.Reagan taught Kadaffi to be afraid of America, and at least he was kept in check, sort of. But those who take his place could be infinitely worse, and not the proponents of freedom and democracy we're being led to expect.
12:43 AM on 05/21/2011
the core of the muslim brotherhood is al quaeda, they are our friends now LMAO we engaging in a civil war in a foreign country, we running on debt to the banks equal to our GDP. and Libya Qaddafi, Nut and yahoo, or any other middle east jack leg is worth as much as the most serious National security issue in the country which is our debt, and the rip off bankers that are running a ponzi scheme on the American people. So no matter what Obama or any other minions of George Soros says WE should not be spending ourselves into more debt!
