Why You Love Biking (In 140 Characters Or Less)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 05/21/11 02:17 AM ET   Updated: 08/02/11 01:28 PM ET

So many of us depend on our cars to get around -- but, in addition to guzzling gas, this habit allows us to be sedentary in our travel, starting a day-long trend of staying still. And recent studies have linked the amount of time spent sitting down to a higher risk of death.

To remind us to get moving, the League of American Bicyclists designated this past week as National Bike to Work Week. And to commemorate the occasion, Performance Bicycle agreed to give one lucky Healthy Living reader a free $749 bike. To enter, we asked you to comment or tweet, telling us why you love to bike.

From personal fitness to environmental equilibrium, here are 50 of your best responses.

I don't ride as much now as I used to. At one time I couldn't get enough of it. We have a very good system of biking trails here. I still get out but the honeymoon is long over.

Aside from gaining friends from mountain biking, most people engage in this activity to stay fit and healthy. It also offers various health benefits especially in cardiovascular system, fat burning and leg muscle building. Mountain biking strengthens leg muscles. It is helpful in toning your calf, quad and buttocks as well as in strengthening your tendons. And what's great is that you do it without load bearing. Hard cycling uses more muscles than any other aerobic sport. A hard climb up a long hill not only works the legs, but the upper body, back, and shoulders. http://www.carallumaactivesbenefits.com

It is excellent for your mental health. You can change the gears and take out your frustrations out on the bike. Best stress reliever in the world.

I love biking and the way I am able to reflect and lose myself in thought. Never mind the physical contributions.Biking is so much more than that. It is connecting and becoming one with your surroundings.I live in Minneapolis and bike all four seasons.Winter biking strengthens my survival skills. It allows me to get outside and beat the winter blues. I have a 5 year old daughter whom has grown up immersed in the world of bikes as we donated our car to charity when she was 9 months old. Not once have we ever thought "well only if we owned a car we could" one can live and live happily with just bikes!

YES!!!!! I live in Philly and I cycle along the river in the park. When I rest, I sit on this wall and look out at the river, and the rowers, and the traffic coming and going in the distance. It is so peaceful and serene. And you see so many more things you never notice when you are zipping by in your car.
