Joakim Noah Apparently Says 'F--k You Faggot' To Fan (VIDEO)

Joakim Noah Gay Slur

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 05/22/11 11:59 PM ET Updated: 07/22/11 06:12 AM ET

In an unfortunately unoriginal display of frustration, Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls appears to have been caught on camera saying “F*** you F*****” to a fan.

FloppingOut reports that TNT cameras filmed an angry Joakim Noah mouthing back a hateful anti-gay slur to a fan after receiving his second foul early in the first quarter.

Just last month, Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 for yelling a homophobic slur at a referee. Bryant later released a statement saying, “My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period. The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone.”

Yet, NBA Commissioner David Stern said, "While I'm fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated... Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society."

While there may be no place for derogatory comments, they appear to be taking place at lightning speed in a disturbing trend. Regarding acceptance of different sexual orientations in society, some consider the sports world to be trailing behind. Phoenix Suns president and CEO Rick Welts, who recently revealed to the public that he is gay, told The New York Times, "This is one of the last industries where the subject is off limits… Nobody's comfortable in engaging in a conversation."

Joakim Noah was heckled by a reportedly intoxicated fan and was fined $50,000 by the NBA for calling him a bad name. Ouch.
This after the Bulls star issued an apology. That is simply not fair, and is wrong. And you do not have to be Armenian to understand.

I am 43, and the families of my four grandparents were decimated with Turkish government-ordered deportations into the Deir Zor Syrian desert -- with the women being
sold into harems for enslavement, with boys and men beheaded, and with property and farms being completely confiscated. They were part of an Armenian nation that was targeted for cultural and physical destruction.
My family, 9 decades later, is still haunted with the harrowing stories of infants dying of thirst in their mother's arms. 60 Minutes recently did a report on the
Armenian Genocide.

From 1893 to 1923, billions of dollars worth of gold, property and farms were stolen and incalculable human suffering
including the annihilation of 2 million Armenians, Greeks and Assyrian Christians, was dished out by the Turkish state.
The policy of race extermination has resulted in not even a single apology, nor a single penny of punishment, but instead a steady stream state-sponsored denials, obfuscations and a pervasive
demonization of the victims and the survivors who demand justice. Armenians were called all sorts of names as they were shot, cut, bound and drowned.

New Testament says to forgive when one apologizes. Joakim Noah did not have to apologize, but did!

This guy will, undoubtedly, get fined. As much money as he makes it won't really be a burden to him. The only way to seriously attempt to curb this kind of behavior is to cut the hefty income that these rich athletes make. Suspend him for a while

And to anybody saying that using the word "gay" in negative connotation isn't homophobic:

When was the last time you said something you didn't like was incredibly "African?" Do you scream out the word "Frog" at people who annoy you? Have you ever said that your friend was acting like a total "Charlie?"

No. You haven't. But for some reason, you people accept one demographic, and only one demographic, as the acceptable one when describing something negative. If it were arbitrary, you would substitute other slurs randomly.

Here's a wacky thought:

Noah has the freedom to say what he said.

Fans have the right to be offended.

His bosses have the right to punish him.

Does anybody need clarification on any of this?

Why be so quick to come to his rescue. He's making more money than anyone posting on here. If he pays a fine, it's to prove a point to him and the rest of the world. No it's not okay to just say anything in the heat of the moment. If somebody called Kobe or Noah a n*gger in the heat of the moment, that would not be okay. Why use those words at all, even if you don't mean anything by it. When you do that, you perpetuate the stereotype that it's bad to be black or gay, even if you "don't mean anything by it". I stand by the decision and don't think any of them should be using words like that. At the same time I know I can't stop it from happening. But if they get caught saying it on camera or to a fan or official, then they better be prepared to get fined. It's in their contracts with the NBA. If they don't like it, they can leave.

People often use this word in a way that clearly isn't derogatory. What's the big deal? It's all about context, people. Like any other word.

This is insane... it's no secret that all those guys talk to each other like that, even your fellow teammates tell crap. It's just when something gets caught on camera and all the politically correct zealots get a hold of it they break out the holier than thou attitude and demand an apology. I'm not saying he didn't deserve to get fined, it's just that I find it ridiculous that the media is trying to play like they don't use words like that or whatever. When there's a competition and testosterone there's going to be fighting words. It doesn't make it right, but you can't take away human instinct.

Noah was wrong, but -
Apparently the fan was not satisfied with saying things like "Noah -you stink" or some other thing about his game - no, the fan apparently felt compelled to scream ugly obscenities and slurs about Noah's mother - over and over ..and over.
There does need to be some basic set of behavior rules for the fans as well - scream your lungs out - but if you conduct a relentless personal (racial/ sexual/ ethnic) abusive verbal asault on a player you should be removed from the event -
again - let me clear - Noah was wrong - and never should have said what he said.

Always love it when a bunch of straight people defend the right of another straight person to use derogatory, hateful language to describe people like me.

Perez Hilton used the word..oh yeah but thats OK right? I'm more forgiving of people when they say things like that(including the n-word(im black)) when they say it in a fit of anger because it's *natural* to want to hurt someone back when they upset you and most of the time people say what they think will get under the skin of the other. If he was saying in causual conversation talking about people like you then thats different.
05:26 PM on 05/24/2011
"Perez Hilton used the word..oh yeah but thats OK right?"

Pardon me, but where did I say that?

Of course, your implication -- that it's somehow the same when a gay dude says it as when a straight person does is pure bullshit. But uh, I don't recall where I ever said it was okay for Perez Hilton to use that word. I don't recall ever saying that anything Perez Hilton ever said was okay.

Let me start off by saying that I am gay. I hate this word but COME ON..lots of people use this word..unfortunately it has became increasingly popular as a slang cuss word and I hear many people say it, not all of them being homophobes. I don't think this should be made into a huge deal..it's just a word.
10:07 AM on 05/24/2011
No one's made it into a huge deal, as far as I can tell. He hasn't been sanctioned in any way. All that happened is he's apologized for what he said.

Let's not leap all over each other to hate on "political correctness run amok" or whatever the Fox News take on this is until he's at least been punished in some way.

I still believe but I'm getting tired

too true the fans are really out of control, a ticket in no way should give these cowards the right to abuse players from the safety of their seats. Tired of these yellow b*stards yelling things during a game that they would cr*p their pants if they had to repeat in the parking lot to the player's face.
