According to eyewitnesses, a double rainbow was seen following the tornado in Joplin, Missouri, on Sunday, which killed dozens and left a path of destruction 6 miles long.

The sight was apparently captured on video by at least three people near Springfield, Missouri, outside Joplin, Missouri, The Arlington Cardinal reported.

One blogger called the event "freaky and ominous." Footage of the Joplin double rainbow has been spreading quickly across the Web.

This isn't the first time a rainbow was spotted after a tornado or ominous weather.

It wasn't so much the double rainbow as the weird color the sky turned. I live about 10 miles east of Springfield and at one point the sky turned red. It was downright scary. Coming just one day after that evangelist predicted the rapture, I looked outside and said "Shit, he missed by one day!"

Double rainbows usually appear two days after the end of the world has been narrowly averted.

How beautiful that God sent down two rainbows after he killed 117 people with a tornado.

Even though that was an easy joke to make, the delivery was superior enough it made me laugh out loud. Fanned. :)

The sighting of such a beautiful occurrence of nature might give the people of Joplin a spiritual lift. In times of tragedy, any sign is probably has a tremendous psychological impact.

Edits... indeed, I despise this about HuffPo comments. Almost every comment section of other common sites allow SOME sort of editing, or at LEAST the ability to delete a comment and rewrite it. I know it's simple advice to just "don't make mistakes then", but for the rest of us who live in humbleville, some sort of editing function isn't too much to ask around here I don't think.

Why so amazed? This is a normal, natural phenomenon. There is nothing ominous about it.

Maybe it'd because of where I live and grew up, but the vast majority of rainbows I have seen growing up are "double" and am more amazed at the way people are reacting to these things. In fact, the one I took a picture of just yesterday was 'double' and I didn't even think about it being double until I posted it to Facebook and someone exclaimed "it's a double rainbow!". Here's a link to it:

I don't understand why people ignore the omens.. We live in an age of astrophysics, nanotechnology and supercomputers.. Today we are here just because we humans are intelligent enough to perceive facts and try to perform calculations ourself, which no other creatures in the world possess. We human beings are gifted with brains (which most of the people don't have) and we have the capability to think, perceive and analyze. These facts are quite ominous and who ever denies this fact are just denying it for the heck of it, it quite obvious that they will have a slight smear of fear inside their hearts.. Wish God almighty will make them understand before its too late...

If people today still don't understand the "phenomenon" of rainbows we practically still live in the dark ages. Where's Jerry Falwell when you need him to confirm this by dragging god into every natural event? Ah, but it is an act of god. Zzzzzz...

There was plenty of time to save your life in Joplin. Only the people who ignored the siren or didn't motivate fast enough. It sucks, but I'm sure most people it was their own fault, they messed up so they died. http://bit.ly/ltSP4x

You're an idiot. Some of those people were in hospital beds.
02:23 AM on 05/24/2011
Are you out of your mind? I am from Joplin, I knew people in the hospital when it was hit - people had minutes to respond - many were injured saving people's lives and even if you take shelter in a storm like this, buildings are still evaporated. I hope you can realize how insensitive and utterly ignorant your comment is - to make up for it, you should apologize and donate money to the relief efforts. I hope you are never victimized then blamed for it. Have some integrity. Cannot even express how angry this made me.

Double rainbow seen near edge of very heavy rain cloud shock!

Double rainbows are always there, but you can only see the fainter outer one when the background is dark (cumulonimbus is good for that), and the heavier the rain, the brighter the rainbow (cumulonimbus is good for that too). The only requirement is that the cloud departs in the opposite direction to the sun, which means late afternoon for a westerly wind. Nothing mystical folks.
