Tim Pawlenty Campaign Dead? Presidential Announcement Runs On Obituary Page (PHOTO)

First Posted: 05/23/11 01:22 PM ET Updated: 07/23/11 06:12 AM ET

Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty is kicking off his campaign for president on Monday, but is the political operation doomed just as it begins?

Kevin Hoffman at City Pages writes, "Pawlenty's presidential campaign is Dead On Arrival, according to his hometown newspaper."

The Republican hopeful's announcement ran on the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Obituary page on Monday morning. City Pages relays an image of how the publication played the news:

Pawlenty is formally declaring his candidacy at a town hall event in Iowa. In conjunction with the launch of his campaign, the former governor made appearances on multiple television programs on Monday morning, including NBC's "Meet the Press," ABC's "Good Morning America" and CBS' "The Early Show."

Here's a web video the Pawlenty campaign released on Sunday night previewing his official announcement.

How about some "truth" to the tune of "London Bridges falling down". We'd sure like to hear how blameless Pawlenty is for all the bad stuff that happened on his watch. It always falls under the "you can't blame me 'cause I was busy ignoring all those problems" defense. Just listen you are going to hear a lot of it!

Sorry folks but a tornado ripped through Minneapolis on Sunday so the paper was kind of filled with Tornado news, no room for Pawlenty. But hey lets lie and take things out of context like Media Matters does!

Okay - that made me blow Diet Coke out my nose.

Poor guy - can't cut a break. All those goofy reporters who actually check the facts and find out you're a little "off" on the truth thing - and now this??? Very funny.

Too funny...St Paul Pioneer Press is well-known for leaning right. There's a reason Pawlenty didn't make the big announcement in his home state.

T Paw screwed his chance for high office during the Senate Election drama. If he stands up and starts with I wanted to deny the Democrat the seat as long as possible and did not want to upset the State Republicans, I would be impressed and that would be the truth.

Really? Are you saying he didn't? THAT would be the big lie. I live in Minnesota. Minnesota is REQUIRED by our Constitution to balance the budget. There is no way that he could have NOT balanced the budget.
In reality, the budget was balanced throughout Pawlenty's entire term. When he left office the Dems PROJECTED a budget deficit. That PROJECTION would have required some insane spending to occur (all of which Pawlenty stated he was AGAINST). It did not occur AS PROJECTED and their PROJECTED DEFICIT eventually ended up IN THE BLACK. Therefore, there NEVER WAS a deficit.

Pawlenty why did you leave Minnesota 6 billion in debt.....and lie about it?

He did not. That was a PROJECTED DEFICIT which never occured. He couldn't have left a debt as Minnesota is REQUIRED by our Constitution to have a balanced budget

Ezra Klein's take on the story is familiar and factual to me, as a Minnesotan who endured Pawlenty's terms.

Now that is pretty darn funny. I didn't realize the St.Paul Pioneer Press had such a good sense of humor.
