Armie Hammer Talks Leonardo DiCaprio 'J. Edgar' Kiss

Armie Leonardo J Edgar

Since he pulled double duty in "The Social Network" -- and earned himself a breakout -- Armie Hammer's career has been on fire. And first up for his post-Facebook flick: heating up the screen with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Hammer plays Clyde Tolson, Associate FBI Director under longtime chief J. Edgar Hoover (played by DiCaprio) in Clint Eastwood star-studded biopic, "J. Edgar." Tolson is rumored to have done far more than assist Hoover in his vast empire of secret gathering and celebrity monitoring, though; it's long been rumored that the two lawmen were secret gay lovers, a topic Eastwood's biopic is embracing wholeheartedly.

As such, Hammer and DiCaprio will share "lots of kissing scenes," as Hammer told E! Online in February.

Yesterday, speaking to Entertainment Tonight Canada, Hammer revealed that the scenes have been completed and gave a recap of the kissing.

"It wasn't that weird - I have never kissed a guy - it's not something I'm going to do in my private life, but at the end of it I was, like, man, there is a lot of weird hype," he said (via Just Jared). "You always have a special relationship with someone when you finish a movie with them, but...he's got a bunch of stuff he is doing after that, I've got a bunch of stuff I'm doing....we didn't start a book club together or anything."

As for that stuff he's doing, it includes two major roles he just grabbed. He'll play the Prince (where he'll be kissing Lilly Collins) in "The Brothers Grimm: Snow White" and will ride as The Lone Ranger, alongside Johnny Depp's Tonto.

I could have saved the studio a lot of money by playing the role for free.

The real sickness in Hollywood is that lesbian and gay actors still cannot live their lives openly and hope to have much of a chance at mainstream film roles. We have a very long way to go. A person perceived as straight can play a gay role and do just fine, they're even viewed by many as tolerant and brave, but once an openly gay person plays a gay role, they are limited to being a character actor. This may be institutional homophobia in Hollywood, I'm not sure the public would have a hard time with it these days. Although the sex appeal of a famous personality is what sells a lot of movies and the public probably wouldn't respond to this marketing if a person was open about their homosexual orientation. It's doubtful that Harrison Ford would have had his career had he been exactly the same persona but gay in his private life and open and honest about it.

There are a few exceptions of excellent, older, established actors who have survived coming out but not for younger actors trying to make their mark, they're still forced to be in the closet at some level to have a chance at success. It's ironic considering the contributions that LGBT people have made to the film industry.

This brings to mind what transpired when David Letterman asked Jim Carey about his playing the role of a gay man in "I Love You, Philip Morris;" Jim was visibly steamed, and said "Boy, we haven't grown at all, have we? We haven't grown at all.... We're still children in the schoolyard. Honestly. No offense Dave, for god's sakes, have you ever seen a gay man? Are there gay people in Indiana? Is it ok to be gay there, is what I'm asking. There's not a policy against gay people there or here?"
I guess we still haven't grown very much, eh?

J. Edgar Hoover, another right-wing, anti-gay closet case. The timing is great.

Kudos, Clint.

Eastwood is correct. Hoover was worse than McCarthy and being gay had nothing to do with it

I wonder if a lesbian or gay actor has ever been interviewed about the weirdness of kissing a member of the opposite sex. Someday we'll get past all of this nonsense.

I'm not an actor, but it doesn't seem like a difficult acting job to kiss any pair of lips, male, female, or silicone. Those who are freaked by the thought are really, really immature. This thread is as childish as a second grader saying that a classmate of the opposite sex has "koodies."

Oh really? Sticking your tongue in someone's mouth, tasting their saliva as it mixes with your own while giving a convincingly moving and passionate embrace is just like pressing your lips to silicone?

I am definitely not into berating gays in any way, shape or form, but your characterization is the exact opposite of what we need in this world: a little honest feedback!!

How is this story any different than two actors of the opposite sex who have absolutely no personal relationship and may not even be attracted to one another? I'm not sure how to read your post, it just seems to me that there would be no reaction if this was a story about opposite sex actors.
01:45 PM on 05/25/2011
I agree with KYZipster. One who is straight is NOT attracted to everyone of the opposite sex. One who is gay is NOT attracted to everyone of the same sex. A happily married star may not particularly want to kiss a starlet who is not his wife. IT'S CALLED ACTING.

I would want some courtesy ground rules for ANY acting kiss: no garlic 24 hours before shooting and Listerine before shooting.

Look in the mirror and try to decide what your hang-ups are - you sure have some.
