Malik Wiley, 17, Dies From Gun He Thought Was Empty, Police Say

A seventeen-year-old in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood on the city's South Side apparently killed himself Tuesday evening while playing with a gun he thought was empty.

Malik Wiley, age 17, was with friends in an apartment on the 4700 block of South Evans Avenue when the shooting occurred at around 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, FOX Chicago reports.

News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak told the Chicago Tribune that he removed the shells from a revolver and put them in his pants pocket. He then jokingly put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger, the boy's friends told police.

One bullet had apparently not been removed from the gun, and Wiley shot himself.

The teen was pronounced dead at 7:45 p.m. at University of Chicago Hospitals, the medical examiner's office told WLS.
