Queen Elizabeth II Wears Hairnet To Chelsea Flower Show (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 05/25/2011 2:34 pm   Updated: 07/25/2011 5:12 am

Before Queen Elizabeth II wore florals to meet FLOTUS on Tuesday, she stepped out to the Chelsea Flower Show in London on Monday in a printed dress, baby blue coat and a hairnet.

That's right, a hairnet! The headpiece was decorated with black bows and was supposedly made by designer Angela Kelly. A Buckingham Palace spokesman confirmed to the Daily Mail, "It wasn't a fascinator. It was definitely a net. I think it was a pragmatic choice as it was fairly windy down there." The Mail adds that some passersby joked "she should 'sell the offending article on eBay and have the milliner sent to the Tower.'" Speaking of, Princess Beatrice was there, too.

Anyway, we're not sure if the Queen had her sights set on starting a trend (see: hat-and-scarf combo in Abu Dhabi), or if this is standard gardening gear. Horticulturalists, we're not.

Maybe the Queen will start a new trend. Those god awful hats that those Brits wear are eyesores.

She royally rocks it the hair net!

Well bless her heart. This seems to have something of a history, since she has worn this exact hairnet on this occasion - the visit to the flower market - several times before. There's gotta be a backstory, but I don't know it. It's interesting that in the first years she wore this, her own hair was still black, and it looked as if she just had some bows pinned here and there in her hair. As the years go by, and the Queen goes gray, the hairnet and its bows stand out more sharply as Queen Elizabeth's hair becomes gray, and then white.

Her majesty, as always, chic, regal, royal, and classy. What an impeccable regal dressing sense!

The Queen looks fabulous...and cute...and happy! Her coat is tailored to perfection. How do they do that with fabric? I enjoy looking at anyone who is having fun with fashion. It's good for everyone involved.

They use very GOOD and EXPENSIVE fabric. You can just tell how wonderful the wool is in that coat. It's amazing craftsmanship. Plus, I love the dress print (it's probably a wonderful silk . . . . . grrrr).

It is known as a whimsie, used especially in the 50's and 60's when hats were the appropriate attire for the well dressed lady.

AS for her posture the Queen is in her 80's and has normal bone loss and shrinkage. Check your height when you hit your latter 40's, 50's, 60's, etc.

She needs to do some yoga nidra so she can stand straighter...Her posture looks abominable...

She's an old lady! She looks good.
Gravity causes many of us old people to yield to its irresistible force.

Her posture is outstanding for her age. Given bone loss and the normal aging process it is highly possible that she is standing as straight her body allows.

My grandmother wore these for years. What ever is the problem with this hair net?. My Grandma wore these in the 60s and 70s and you used to be able to buy them at Grants, Ben Franklin and stores like Woolworth's.

Very much the same. Hers looked allot like the Queens and some had rhinestones and bows and other embellishments.

And in fashion everything returns so maybe she will renew the trend.

Royal watchers know they wear weird things ON their heads because they don't have anything IN their heads.

For a older woman she looks OK.
