Amanda Knox Support Campaign Heats Up In Italy

Amanda Knox

By ALESSANDRA RIZZO   05/26/11 11:25 AM ET   AP

ROME -- Some Italian lawmakers claim Amanda Knox was treated unfairly and are seeking a probe of the prosecutors' office in Perugia, the city where the American student was convicted of murdering her British roommate.

The request to the Italian justice minister Thursday is spearheaded by a lawmaker who has frequently visited Knox in prison and written a positive book about her. The lawmaker also sent a letter to the Italian president seeking his intervention to avert any controversies arising from the case.

Both the petition and the letter cast doubt on the prosecution's case, alleging that an appeals trial currently under way has undermined the reliability of evidence originally collected against the former exchange student from Seattle, Washington. They also maintain that Knox, who has been in jail since before her conviction, should not have been kept behind bars.

"These distortions, not without reason, are fueling accusations against the administration of justice in our country," lawmaker Rocco Girlanda said in the letter, which was given to The Associated Press.

The petition to Justice Minister Angelino Alfano was signed by 11 lawmakers, all members of Premier Silvio Berlusconi's coalition. It asks Alfano to consider sending inspectors to judicial offices in Perugia – a move that is considered very serious in Italy and is typically read as a sign of discontent from Rome.

There was no immediate response from authorities.

Girlanda is an ally of Berlusconi, who has vehemently attacked Italian magistrates and is seeking to reform the system to limit their powers. Girlanda also heads a foundation that seeks to promote ties between Italy and the United States, and has established what he says is a close friendship with the 23-year-old American.

Knox was arrested on Nov. 6, 2007, four days after the body of her roommate Meredith Kercher was found in the apartment the two shared as foreign students in Perugia. The 21-year-old Kercher was stabbed to death.

Also arrested was Raffaele Sollecito, an Italian who was Knox's boyfriend at the time of the slaying. Both were convicted of sexual assault and murder in 2009. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison and Sollecito to 25.

The two have always denied wrongdoing.

"Who will compensate two 20 year olds – in the hoped-for case that the appellate trial recognizes their innocence – of the four years of life and freedom that they have been unjustly deprived of?" said Girlanda. "The so-called evidence and testimonies of the prosecution have proved to be at best considered contradictory and unreliable."

In Italy, many sentences are not served until all levels of appeals are exhausted. However, it is not unusual for defendants to be kept behind bars if they are considered a flight risk, or they might tamper with evidence or repeat a crime. Legal experts say that in murder cases, defendants are often kept under custody during trial.

Knox's appeals court trial has reviewed some of the claims and witnesses of the first trial, but also admitted some new testimony sought by the defense. The appeals court has granted the defense's request for a review of forensic evidence, including DNA traces.

The lawmakers' petition claims the first trial was effectively limited only to the prosecution's "questionable case" and that the defendants were denied their right to a full defense. The prosecution has denied suggestions of an unfair trial.

The appeals trial continues next month. A verdict is expected after the summer.

The truth is finally coming out. Most of the people who post these violent and hateful accusations of "certainty" against Sollecito and Knox haven't done any research beyond reading tabloid accounts. Those of us who HAVE done real hours of research have known for ages that the so-called DNA evidence was a load of rubbish. It IS going to come out and all those who pre-judged this pair and acted as though psychology and personality profiling was unimportant will hopefully be chagrined at their rush to judgment. People do not do extreme actions that are greatly out of character unless there is a very unusual pressure or impetus to do so. It is inconceivable that two persons with no prior violent tendencies could commit a murder of this type. And that testimony of Guede -come on! Talk about "over egging the pudding". His melodramatic language is like something out of a tabloid itself. Why did he never say they were there until coached by prosecutors?

I am not going to debate the the people that believe Knox. Guilty. I was not there. Nor were in fact any of YOU. But I will continue to follow the information (such as it is) to the final outcome. I hope there is some kind of resolution to all of this some day. I don't think we will ever come to an agreement of the situation or any of the alleged facts of the case. My prayers and thoughts are with the victims family. And I only ask that we as fellow human beings, not make a circus of this terrible tragedy. Thank you.

Do you think because Italy's President is following the case that Knox and Sollectio will get an acquital? Here's the article:

They'll get an acquittal if they get a judge who isn't corrupt.

The current judge might be that judge, although I question why he is being so caviler about letting the trial drag out while two innocent people stay in prison.

If they are not acquitted, it'll probably fall to the US military to free Amanda.

they throw them away when they have murdered the owner.

"Since when do drug dealer/ thieves throw away two working phones??"

The reason he took the phones was so that Meredith would be unable to summon help as she bled to death on the floor of her room.

Like CodyJoeBibby said, he did not want to be caught with phones from the person he had just killed.

A great many compliments have been directed toward the Perugia authorities by the Amanda is guilty folks..

So, maybe those folks can explain why the authorities told Amanda she has AIDS so that they can get from her a list of people with whom she had contact.  It would a deception, of course.  But what purpose in the furtherance of law enforcement could that have served?  They had all the forensic specimens from her.  So, why the need for that information?

As it turns out, that list of contacts was leaked to the press so that the anti-Amanda atmosphere could further be poisoned.  Is that something that the Amanda-is-guilty folks are proud of?

Perhaps, some of the Amanda-is-guilty folks can step forward and condemn them for that.  Who will be first?

If the contaminated bra clasp had the DNA of four persons on it, why was only one person accused of the killing?

The answer is simple.  Mignini accused Sollecito of the crime before -- before -- this piece of evidence was discovered.  Prior to that, there was no evidence that could withstand scrutiny of Sollecito's presence at the murder scene.  No evidence he was in the house at thew time of death.  No evidence he was even in the neighborhood.

The finding of the bra clasp "evidence" came in the nick of time for Mignini.

I wonder if the cops bothered to try to find the three other "suspects" before they selected one of them as their guilty party.

three people were accused of the killing actually

Their defense was unable to prove that any contamination occured

They didnt even bother showing up to witness the testing on the knife and the clasp

His skin DNA was found on the clasp in a locked crime scene on an item it had no buisness being on. His DNA was also found in two other places, one being a ciggerette butt

Good god, give it up
10:27 PM on 06/14/2011
"three people were accused of the killing actually"

I notice you dodged his point about why no charges against the other people whose DNA was on the bra clasp.

---

"Their defense was unable to prove that any contamination occured"

Stop lying. Yes they did.

---

"His skin DNA was found on the clasp in a locked crime scene on an item it had no buisness being on."

Actually, no. The DNA test was fraudulent.

That said, the original point (that you dodged) was, if the DNA had no business being there, why no charges against the other people whose DNA was on the contaminated clasp.

The allege knife and the bra clasp were made up evidence to frame these 2 innocent students.

INJUSTICE IN PLAIN SIGHT.

Amanda Knox and Rafaelle Sollecito were railroaded by corrupt elements of the Italian judiciary, this tragic farce has been going on for almost 4 years.

This case is presently being reviewed by the Italian appeals court, presided over by judge Claudio Pratillo Hellman, where the lies associated with this case are being debunked one by one.

Regardless of that fact, a small number of fanatics that you will find here, continue to spread falsities and innuendos hoping that these innocents remain incarcerated, read on and discover what these despicable people have to say. thanks.

For Oralloy (and any other Knox supporter) to say that the murder victim Meredith Kercher is a "symbol of hate and cruelty" is despicable.

Isn't it easy for perpetrators and their supporters like Oralloy to have the "blame the victim" mentality. Classic. Better yet, let's pretend Meredith Kercher didn't exist at all.

Disgusting.

Crazy Cody now seems to think that it takes a college degree to figure out that Amanda Knox is guilty of murder. In addition, he needs to feel superior to a stranger on a messageboard. Why? probably due to an exceedingly low self esteem, and a desperate need to be approved by others. At any rate, since he cant debate the facts of the case, or describe why his love interest is innocent on any meaningful level, or even try to, this is what he's reduced to. Kind of sad really. But if it helps to ease his suffering by attacking me, well, go ahead! I just hope that he gets the help he needs!

Italy's third-world judicial system is so corrupt that they didn't need to physically "create" evidence to fool a lab.

The Italian labs were more than happy to concoct fake reports implicating innocent people.

And the corrupt Italian judges were more than happy to prevent the defense from subjecting any of the fake claims to any real scrutiny.

Honest questions for Cult Knox Members

If Rudy broke into the cottage, why was there no DNA or fiber evidence anywhere in the room?

How did Rudy carry the rock up to the window? In his teeth?

Why isnt Rudy's blood mixed with the victim's instead of Knox?

If he went to the bathroom to cleanup, why was his DNA and/or blood not found mixed with the victims, but Amanda's was? Why was there no shoe prints belonging to Rudy leading into the bathroom, but was found to go right out of the room and out of the house? If he stepped in blood to leave the bathmat print, why was there no other prints of Rudy found leading into the bathroom?

Why was there a shoeprint found under the victim's body compatible with a woman's foot? Did Rudy break in with a female partner?

Why would Rudy, running right out the door, return later to move the body, stage the break in, etc...

Just a few questions...I'm sure Oraltoy will will contribute with his usual wit...

"Honest questions for Cult Knox Members"

Hardly honest. And why are you cultists falsely accusing non-cultists of being in a cult?

---

"How did Rudy carry the rock up to the window? In his teeth?"

Question is not premised in reality. Guede threw the rock though the window. He did not carry it.

---

"Why isnt Rudy's blood mixed with the victim's instead of Knox?"

Question is not premised in reality. Amanda's blood was not on the scene, mixed or unmixed.

---

"If he went to the bathroom to cleanup, why was his DNA and/or blood not found mixed with the victims, but Amanda's was?"

Question is not premised in reality. Amanda's blood was not in the bathroom, mixed or unmixed.

---

"Why was there a shoeprint found under the victim's body compatible with a woman's foot? Did Rudy break in with a female partner?"

Question is not premised in reality. No such print was found.

---

"Why would Rudy, running right out the door, return later to move the body, stage the break in, etc..."

Question is not premised in reality. There was no staging. Nor did he return to the scene.

1.  Your premise is faulty.  Just because a person enters a room has no bearing as to the certainty he would leave evidence he was in the room.

2.  This has already been answered.  Here are some ways in which the rock could have been used to break the window from the outside:

a.  He could have thrown it.  He plays basketball.  This isn't exactly a three-point shot.

b.  He could have climbed up, opened the shutter(s), climbed down, tossed the rock.

c.  He could have carried the rock up in his backpack.

3.  Rudy's DNA is all over the murder room.  Of course, it was mixed with his victim's.  Or, are you talking about the DNA mixture in Filomena's room?  If so -- and even if your notion it was blood could survive the sniff test -- how could so little blood be isolated to one spot in Filomena's room, when the actual killer tracked it around the place, there was so much of it.

4.  Mixed blood in the bathroom is a sign the two women used the bathroom.

5.  If you're impressed by the claim none of Rudy's footprints were discovered leading into the bath, why are you not impressed with the fact none of Amanda's was found either?

6.  I think it's been established that Rudy's shoeprint was found under the body.  It fits the sole of his shoe.

7.  One of your questions assume the break-in was staged, the body was moved after Rudy escaped, etc.  I have not been impressed with the conjecture that purportedly establishes that.

1. Your premise is faulty. Just because a person enters a room has no bearing as to the certainty he would leave evidence he was in the room.
>>Not faulty at all. A person breaking into a window would have left something behind, either blood from a cut, or some kind of fiber.
2-You're right, I already explained how your unlikely theories are utterly ridiculous. Even you dont believe them I'm sure, especially B...come on. You seem like somewhat of a smart guy.
3-Rudy's DNA was NOT all over the murder room.
4-this didnt convince the Jury, and it's not going to convince appeals court. In fact, the defense isnt even touching it. But thanks for admitting finaly that it was there
5-Amanda's was found, or a print compatible, under the moved body. Others were found in the hallway, with luminol.
6-the shoe was compatible with Amanda's shoe size, and indicates the body was moved. Rudy didnt return to move the body.
7-this isnt conjecture at all.

Damn that was easy.
