Google Wallet: Twitter Users React To Google's Mobile Payment Platform

First Posted: 05/26/11 03:20 PM ET   Updated: 07/26/11 06:12 AM ET

Google unveiled its heavily anticipated Google Wallet today during a massive press conference at the company's New York City headquarters.

The new service will allow users to register their credit cards on their smartphones and use the device to conveniently purchase goods and services.

"Because Google Wallet is a mobile app, it will do more than a regular wallet ever could. You'll be able to store your credit cards, offers, loyalty cards and gift cards, but without the bulk," Google said via blogpost. "When you tap to pay, your phone will also automatically redeem offers and earn loyalty points for you. Someday, even things like boarding passes, tickets, ID and keys could be stored in Google Wallet."

Will Google Wallet equal money in the bank for Google? Here's what the folks on Twitter have to say:

For a publicly traded company, it sure is mystery as to what line of business Google is in from one week to the next.

Or the relative safety. This is an identity thief's dream. They can steal all your information at once.

thanks but no thanks.. how long before the system is hacked and well, u know the rest.. (AND: will google keep track of users' purchases? they may say no, but can we trust them??? I guess as soon as they're hit with a subpoena or a warrant wanting to know what someone purchased on a given date or something we'll find out...;-)

Maybe they'll connect Wallet with StreetView so purse snatchers know where you're at at any given time?

Why don’t we just embed a chip under my skin that would hold all this information and more, like medical records, driver’s Lic, Car Keys, and maybe even event passes?

maybe you are out for a run with your music on your phone and now your wallet in your phone so if you want to stop for a drink at the 7-eleven you can buy that gatorade by swiping your phone instead of taking your wallet out on the run with you. some credit cards also have NFC chips in them the nice thing about this compared to your credit cards is the phone turns off the NFC when not in use by the app so not as likely for a hacker to steal it walking down the street like they can with your physical wallet.

Google Wallet, coming to select phones near you. It will be interesting to see which Android phones won't be able to use the product.

Apple also has plans to implement the same feature using NFC technology.

What I'd like to see is a shopping cart outfitted with a digital scale and bags. As I scan items using my barcode reader, bag them the way I like, add them to my cart, my phone tabulates my purchases and when I hit the register, my phone finalizes the transaction, and I push my cart straight out to my car.

All the new Nexus S phones currently have NFC built into them and I'm sure a slew of new HTC / Samsung phones will be adding NFC on future phones.

I'm glad to see that Apple is trying to at least keep up with its competition.

Google Wallet is one of the coolest things Google has done in a while. Some of those reactions are absurdly stupid.
