LA Weekend Getaway: Channel Islands for Memorial Day

A Park in the Pacific: Escape Los Angeles to the Channel Islands

Located off the coast of Ventura, the Channel Islands -- Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, San Miguel and Santa Rosa -- compose Los Angeles’ closest National Park. Although these five islands are within 60 miles of 18 million people, their rugged cliffs, sweeping valleys, mountain ranges and 175 miles of coastline feel worlds away from the frenetic pace of city. The islands make an easy weekend trip for nature lovers of all ages. (Story continues after slideshow)

Channel Islands

Start: Ventura HarborThis island adventure starts with a road trip on the 101 north to Ventura. Here, you’ll find the Channel Islands Visitor Center, where you can procure island maps, check out wildlife exhibits and get information on weather conditions. Ventura is also the last opportunity to make sure you’ve packed enough food and water, as there are no restaurants or shops on any of the islands. Grab last-minute necessities at the Vons in the harbor, as the National Park Service warns that there are “no remedies for poor planning once you have arrived.”Channel Islands Visitor Center,1901 Spinnaker Drive, Ventura, 805-658-5730 or http://www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/visitorcenters.htm).Vons, 2433 Harbor Boulevard, Ventura, (805-642-6761).Embark: Getting to the Islands requires a trip across the Santa Barbara Channel by boat or plane. Although there are no state run ferries, the Island Packers boat company offers year round service to Anacapa and Santa Cruz and rides to the three remaining “outer islands” from April through October. Private boats are allowed on all five islands, and flights are available through Channel Islands Aviation. There is no charge to enter the park. If you’ve got more time, pick an island, lock down a camp site and immerse yourself in nature. Anacapa, the closest island, is known for bird watching and hiking and is also home to the historic Anacapa Island lighthouse. Santa Cruz, the largest island, features two mountain ranges and miles of easy to strenuous hiking. All of the islands offer kayaking, snorkeling, diving and miles of untouched beaches. Surfing can be done on Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz and San Miguel.

Wildlife: The islands are home to a plethora of bird species, sea lions and seals, foxes, and the threatened island Night Lizard. Dogs are not allowed in the park.

Sleep: There are no hotels on the Channel Islands, although campsites are available on all five. Reservations are required and can be made through National Recreation Reservation Service. The fee is $15 per night. Dress warm. The islands are known for their high winds and heavy fog.

Victorious Return: Cruise back to the harbor and celebrate a successful foray into nature with dinner at Andria’s Seafood Restaurant. This local favorite serves oysters, clam chowder and fish of all kinds. The atmosphere is casual, so there’s no need to worry about your windblown appearance. 1449 Spinnaker Drive, Ventura, (805-654-0546 or www.andriasseafood.com)
