Michele Bachmann Says She Feels 'Calling' To Run For President

Michele Bachmann Calling

MIKE GLOVER   05/27/11 02:26 PM ET   AP

JOHNSTON, Iowa — Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann made it clear Friday that she was leaning toward a presidential run, saying on an Iowa public affairs program the she felt a "calling" to seek the Republican nomination.

Bachman repeated her plan to announce her presidential plans next month in Waterloo, Iowa, where she was born and lived as a child before moving to neighboring Minnesota. But it sounded as though her mind was largely made up.

"I've had this calling and tugging on my heart that this is the right thing to do," Bachmann said during a taping of the public television program, "Iowa Press."

"People want something new and different and that's one thing I've established with my voting record," she said.

Bachmann said her decision won't be altered by whether other candidates enter the race. There has been a recent flurry of speculation that former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin would seek the nomination, a move that could reduce Bachmann's strength among social conservatives and tea party activists.

"The decision I make is completely unique and unrelated to any other candidate," Bachmann said.

Bachmann planned to hold private meetings with pastors, business leaders and elected officials during her Iowa visit, and she was scheduled to speak at a Friday gathering in Davenport. She had been scheduled to be the keynote speaker at a Republican dinner on Thursday in Des Moines, but she was forced to address the audience via video link because a vote in Congress delayed her trip.

Bachmann has made five visits recently to Iowa, where caucuses begin the presidential nominating process. She also has held events in other early nominating states, including New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Those events have left her optimistic about a White House run, she said.

"We're coming very close now," said Bachmann. "We're very excited about the progress we've made."

Bachmann said fundraising has gone well, and she has hired staff in each of the early nominating states. She added that she feels comfortable with the one-on-one style of campaigning in Iowa and New Hampshire, pointing to her success in building grass-roots networks of activists.

"We've had great grass-roots support and were looking forward to building on that," Bachmann said.

She stressed that her status as an Iowa native would be an advantage as she builds a caucus campaign.

"I think that is the great gold standard to be a native Iowan," Bachmann said. "I think it's a distinct advantage because I have that sensibility. I often tell people that everything I need to know I learned in Iowa."

She assessed the Republican field, declaring former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney the leading candidate at this point.

"The media has stated that the front-runner is Mitt Romney and I think that is true," she said.

Asked about a special congressional election in New York that has been the focus of attention because a Democrat won a seat held by Republicans for decades after a campaign focused on proposed cuts to Medicare, Bachmann said she wasn't overly concerned.

"There was a failure in the messaging about what we need to do," she said.

I used to wish that I could hear the 'calling' and that G-d would show me his plan for my future.

But then I had my eighth birthday, and I started wishing for a new bicycle.

I'm not surprised she "felt a calling". I'm sure she hears voices in her head all day long - illiterate, brain-damaged voices, but voices nonetheless. She's already found her "calling" - national punchline.

I believe Bachmann hears a call...but psychosis is not a qualification for holding public office...then again, looking at most politicians in the US, perhaps it is?

You responded to my post but I had no way to reply back on my own thread.
What I said was that the Left APPEARS to be a largely secular group. By no means did I say everyone on the Left is secular. Also, I had never thought of the word "admission" to be implying guilt. Perhaps I used a poor choice of word but my intentions were not to offend. However, I did look it up, and you were right, but so was I. Here is another definition--; the act of acknowledging something /serted; acknowledgment.

And lastly.....

"I believe Bachmann hears a call...but psychosis is not a qualification for holding public office...then again, looking at most politicians in the US, perhaps it is?"

"The assumptions you are making are neither accurate or constructive."

Both quotes are yours. Please explain to me how the top quote is constructive? I believe that the finger you enjoy pointing at people needs to be pointing right back at yourself.

Bachmann has always listened to the wrong voices in her head.

The rest of us are calling for her to get out of politics. That's OUR calling.

Oh Please let her stay in and win the primary. Dream ticket for us. Bachmann/Trump

A good strong laxative should take care of that "calling", then get on with your miserable life.

I don't know who is calling her but I wish they would stop. I can't stand Romney but he is not stupid. She is.

People feel "callings" all of the time. I don't know why the Left is so afraid of the word. Many people feel called into their professions-- i.e. nursing, teaching. Why make it into such a big deal?

I don't think "the Left" has any fear of "callings". Quite the contrary, for me, respect for the gravity of the concept is why I feel contept for those who co-opt it for their own selfish reasons, as in this case with Rep. Bachmann.

The Presidency of the United States is an incredibly vital, powerful and onerous position and nobody should even contemplate taking it on without tremendous prayerful discernment.

I assure you, it is not a job I'll be applying for soon, but in my own calling, I will work to help the best candidate secure the position.

To answer a "calling", one must start by LISTENING. If Rep. Bachmann was actually heeding a "call", she would recognize that there are far more qualified people for the role than she is (C'mon, folks, let's set some kind of bar for these things), and would be throwing her support behind that person.

Instead, she "hears" the call that a great leader is needed and starts shouting "pick me, pick me!" She will now spend the next several months puplicly deriding, castigating all the other candidates and generally trying to advance her own agenda.

If she said that she was "going for it" because she wants her shot or for whatever reason, I could believe her and, perhaps, applaud her for her moxie and drive.

To masquerade her true motivations as a Devine Calling is blasphemy.

That is why it is such a big deal.

With all due respect, my answer to you is going to come from a religious stand point. First of all, who are we to judge? You really do not know her, or her heart. Nor do I. I am not saying that I even support her, for that matter. As far as hearing the calling, I personally have felt called, or lead in a direction that turned out way different than I had hoped, or expected. It does not mean that I mis-heard the calling. There are always lessons to be learned along our journey, whether the the journey goes in the direction we want it to, or not.
Just because Michele has heard a calling, does not mean that it is in Gods plan for her to win. There are many reasons why things happen, and we may never be privy as to why. The people that she touches, and the lessons that she learns along the way may be the only reason for the calling.
I sincerely appreciated your thoughtful response. Peace to you.

Bachmann that's not a calling you feel, you just sat where my dog threw up. Really, go stand in front of a mirror facing away from it and look back, you can't miss it.

As a former Evangelical Christian, I believe the real difference between Palin and Bachmann is that Bachmann is a true believer, whereas Palin is completely cynical and will say whatever she believes will advance her cause, herself. I think this makes Bachmann even more dangerous than Palin (think Evangelical end-times theology here, for example), though I think they're equally unelectable.

She and palin should both run for president. They would suck all of the oxygen out of the GOP and move it to the far right where it could get 25% of the vote.

It would be nice if for once the repubs could say, I want to run for office to help people and not because it is some grand mission from the magic guy in the sky.
