Huffington Post Readers Reveal Their Summer Reads

First Posted: 05/30/11 05:21 PM ET   Updated: 07/30/11 06:12 AM ET

Ah, summer. Laying beside the pool, with an icy drink in one hand and a great book in the other. But what to read? It seems that so many great books have come out lately that it's difficult to make a decision.

In honor of Memorial Day (the kick-off of our favorite season), we asked our readers what book they are dying to read this summer.

From literary classics to vampire thrillers, here was the feedback.

Did your summer read fail to make the list? Let us know what it is in the comments!

Books I would like to recommend for those interested in Current Events and History:

Tangled Webs by James B. Stewart
The Wichita Divide by Stephen Singular
Before Roe V. Wade by Linda Greenhouse and Reva Siegel
1861: The Civil War Awakening by Adam Goodheart
To End All Wars by Adam Hochschild
The Speech by Bernie Sanders

Fiction:
Say Her Name by Francisco Goldman
Inzanesville by Jo Ann Beard

Humor:
Sleepwalk With Me by Mike Birbiglia

I just read Agatha Christie's "Crooked House" (which I heard is being made into a movie) and really enjoyed it.

Next up for me:
In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson

Thanks to my fellow booklovers for all the recommendations!

I wish HuffPo would give info on these books, rather than just listing them like this. "A Dance With Dragons" is the FIFTH book in a series by this author. You need to read them beginning with book one "A Game of Thrones" in order to fully understand this mythical journey.

The Magician King by Lev Grossman

If you are an adult and enjoyed the Harry Potter series def. give his first book "The Magicians" a try. The Magician King is the sequel that comes out this summer.

WTH??? I will try to repeat what was lost.
Why wait. The Wife and I enjoyed the three book instant classic of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the three disk Swedish English dubbed videos as a chaser.
Picture a goth Pippi Longstocking crossed with female versions of Jason Bourne and Hercule Poirot. All this with great cinematography in the videos reminiscent of Bergman.

Vote whatever you would like for all kinds of pretentious literary fiction. It doesn't change the fact that on July 12, 2011, GRRM's A Dance with Dragons will open at #1 on the NY TImes and Amazon.com bestseller list, and will stay there until the Autumn. It is a fait d'accomplit. Put it in the bank and write the cheque with confidence.

A Dance with Dragons has already been in the top #10 list as a *pre-order* on Amazon.com.

At this point:
"The Magna Carta" by Geoffrey Hindly
"A Mind Awake: an anthology of CS Lewis"
and, of course some Tennyson and Bible studies. I'm focusing on Isaiah and Job now because of a book I'm writing. It's a labor of love.

It's good to see a new book from Hakan Nesser on that list. His mysteries are full of quirky philososphical questions. One of my favorite Nordic crime writers.

I read "Husbands and Wives" a few summers ago. It's worth a revisit.
